    Moon - so sorry about your SIL. If they can make her comfortable, hope she can hang on until after your visit.

    Lacey - agree w/med rant. My MO retired in December. Not sure if the new one is going to work out or not but I sure don't feel any 'warm fuzzys'. My gyn retired in April - and she's the doc I used as a PCP for 15 years. Trying to find new docs who are under 50 so they might be around as long as I am is daunting.

    For those of you dealing with real estate - my son is also trying to buy another house but I've been forbidden to talk about it in case it might jinx the project. They're buying it out of probate so once it's done (win or lose) I'll post a copy of the previous deceased owner's obit - which he wrote himself. Sounds like someone I would have enjoyed knowing. He was an only child & had no children & his wife per-deceased him by many years.

    Last night's dinner was leftover red beans and brown rice. Side was a delicious salad of tomato and cucumber from the farmers' mkt. and a perfect avocado.

    I went to see Lily Tomlin's Grandma yesterday w/a group of ladies from my neighborhood. She does an excellent job. The comedy is subtle and I think some of the older ladies in the audience were shocked by the language & some of the subject matter. I liked it, but 2 out of my group of 4 were 'disappointed' that it wasn't more rolling in the aisles comedy.

    Afterwards we went to Katz's Deli and pretended we were in NYC. Rubens, pastrami on rye, open face hot roast beef, potato latkes, noodle kugel, Dr. Brown's Cream Soda....YUM.

    Minus that sounds like a wonderful day!

    Today I ordered my half Berkshire pig, so i have until March to clean out the freezer. I've never bought half a pig before so I need to figure out what cuts I can get out of a half. I would like to get plenty of sausages so I'll need to do some research. Susan, you have gotten pork right? Any advice?

    Right now I need to clean out the fridge since we leave next Sunday for our trip south. I'm going to kill two birds by having pork chops from the freezer, fixed some way or other, and green beans from the fridge. DH wants stuffing (of course) but I'm going to have some mixed greens instead. I'll make a small amount of stuffing for him.

    It was an absolutely gorgeous day today with sunshine, 73 degrees and little humidity. We finished washing the outside of the house and I washed the outside of the back windows. During the process we noticed several small holes in the siding caused by the spring hail storms so it's a call to the insurance guy tomorrow. Hope it's not too late to file a claim.

    went to Highland House yesterday for my birthday. Had my free Margarita, chose mango. Yum. Couldn't drink but half so my DH obliged by finishing it. Had a lovely grilled shrimp kabob with a beef tenderloin steak. Really good but I barely finished the shrimp. LOL. DH just had the tacos. They are really good there. Took home a slice of carrot cake for dessert.

    Today was leftovers. But didn't feel like the steak so just had cereal. LOL

    Minus, that does sound like a fun day! Interesting that there is a Katz's deli in Texas. DH is a big fan of the NYC one.

    Nance, how exciting to be expecting a half pig! ;) We might need to throw you a piggy shower!

    Last night, I marinated, and DH grilled, a breast of turkey tenderloin that we bought at the turkey farm down the street from my sister's VT "barn/home". It was wonderful! Those little turkeys clearly benefit from the Vermont fresh air, beautiful views, and very kind farmers. ;)

    Today we got lots of veggies and greens at the Farmer's Market, and I spent lots of time washing and organizing them before using some of the corn to make some chowder (non-vegan;). I used lots of the lettuces and the pea tendrils, tomatoes, scallions, arugula and carrots to make a large garden salad over which I sliced pieces from the last of the turkey breast. For dessert we had peach pecan bars with a drizzled icing which I made last night to bring to a church ingathering picnic today. Should not have doubled the recipe since we do not need such contraband in this kitchen!

    I have decided that every baked dessert I make with peaches is too much work!! The boiling then cold water bath to be able to peel them, (if they have even reached a good ripe stage),then the butter/flour/oats cutting process for the crisp or pastry coverings. Annoying...clearly I am not a baker. So today at the farmer's market, it took a lot of restraint to bypass the very ripe looking peaches to save myself some more kitchen work. But I did! What do you folks make with peaches that doesn't take a year and a day to complete?

    I did buy some zucchini (no garden, remember!) to make some zucchini salsa. Of course there are a zillion recipes for it, so I need to find one that feels simple and that begs for cilantro,since I got a big bunch of that.

    Tomorrow, we'll have chicken breasts, more great salad and more corn since they were selling 14 ears for $3... Couldn't resist! I can always freeze some. Also saw a neat recipe that had corn fritters and zucchini salsa. Yum!

    Yesterday we dog sat DS1and DGF's little Scottie pooch for an overnite while they attended a wedding west of here. He proceeded to dig a big hole in the middle of the back lawn, then came inside and threw up dirt and grass on the dining room oriental rug. Fine after that! :/ Generally he is not much of a problem, but DH announced to me that if he ever were to have a thought that he might want to get another dog, it was erased yesterday. We are on the same page about that!

    Tomorrow is the return to stretching class, so I hope I feel more energized. Very low energy and fatigue this weekend. Tomorrow I will start the day with a super fresh smoothie from many of the greens I bought today, and hope that helps! :) Tho my sluggishness might be related to the continuing allergies and compromised sleep. Arggggh!

    Special, hope you are having a great time in California. You certainly left the family in good shape with meals!

    Lacey: I'm with you on the peaches--too much a pain in the butt to scald them. Pity, because I do love peach-raspberry tart.

    I just read recently that if you slice the peaches and freeze them on a baking sheet, when they warm the skins come right off. I suppose you could even freeze them whole. Haven't tried it. I really don't care for cooked peaches and much prefer them eaten out of hand. Having said that, I have several large beautiful nectarines that must be used this week, so I'll probably make a couple of hand pies since I have some pie dough in the freezer.

    Lacey, your comments about the turkey environment tickled me as I was quite taken by the fact that the Berkshire pigs are fed apples from the farm's orchard in the fall.

    Other than peach pie, I have no idea what's for dinner.

    Auntienance: I'll have to keep that in mind! though I suspect that the type of peach might make a difference in terms of peelability. Peach season's over in Michigan, but there's always next year.

    Nance, I am always intriqued by the idea of making your hand pies, and maybe that will be my last effort in my love/hate peach relationship. :/ I assume you use a regular pie crust recipe?

    My sister's two dogs eat the apple drops on her property all day/seasonlong...and they are such happy campers! Your pig should be a happy one! ;)

    Might run out and get some peppers so I can use my eggplants for ratatouille. Always nice to have in fridge as a side. I particularly like adding some balsamic vinegar to mine.

    I start back to bowling tonight---so I guess it means bowling alley burger for dinner every Monday till April......YUMMO....

    I went to an Open House and kinda love the house. It would take a huge chunk out of my savings, double my taxes, but give me the room (almost more) that I need. And I have a lot to do before m my house could go on the market, and that would mean paying heating/electric/water for both during the winter months. Not much moves in Central IL once cold weather arrives... What to do, what to do......

    Lacey, I do use a regular pate brisee crust -- same as my other pies. The juice oozed out of the handpies and they look yummy.

    I decided to grill brats tonight and use up four ears of Olathe corn in the fridge. I'll slice up a tomato and some cukes to go with it. Easy peasy!

    Even tho I'm still tired, it felt good to get my routine done at the gym as well as our exercise class. DH stayed even beyond that and took the hour long muscle conditioning class. He could barely get up from his chair after dinner. Haha...overachiever pain Before the gym, I got the ratatouille started, then ended up putting it in the oven on a low heat while I was gone. It is pretty mushy, but tasty.

    For dinner since DH would be coming back from gym later than I, I ended up doing a stir fry with the chicken including lots of veggies and fresh corn, pea tendrils and a nice bunch of cilantro. Red rice and cuke salad rounded out the meal. Fortunately both DH and I like cilantro. I recall reading an article about why some people cannot stand the aroma/ taste of that herb. For the life of me, I can't recall the theory. ;/

    The ratatouille will be for another night...tho probably not tomorrow since we plan to head for an ocean beach tomorrow, which means we will probably stop to eat seafood on the way home. Our weather is forecasted to return to summer starting tomorrow.

    Not sure if I mentioned that we will be heading to Chicago and South Bend a week from Thursday. So the nightmare task of deciding what to wear and packing begins.....I wish I had the packing gene!

    Queen, I went to undergrad there and my father and bro are ND alums. I got my degree from SMC since women weren't allowed to matriculate in ND's undergrad programs until a couple of years after I finished my degree...altho I did my major coursework in ND classes... Go figure.....So there is some personal (rather than just male familial) loyalty.

    Anyway, ND is playing UMASS on the 26th and our DS2 is a very loyal UMASS alum. He convinced us to make the trip to Chicago (and head to the game from there)and my brother and his wife will also be making the trip there from LA. My brother has recently been dxd with dementia, (likely related to head injuries he sustained while a marine) so I am eager to see how he is doing. After a rendezvous in Chicago, we will be sitting on opposite sides of the stadium ;) and I will be a coward dressed in neutral colors with the UMASS crowd. This is actually the first ND home football game I will be attending since graduating in 1967! I hear that the stadium is even larger than it was when I attended my SMC reunion three years ago. Those alums just keep on giving! The game won't even be a competition. UMASS is just graduating to this league level...and look it! But DS2 is a patient fan as they develop....:)

    Right, the St. Mary's/ND divide. And FOOTBALL! Game day traffic was a bleep if you weren't interested in the games. But enjoy! It's certainly a big deal for them as are interested in it.

    OK - trip is coming together. Looks like we'll fly into Boston Thurs night 10/1. We'll stay at the Wyndham Beacon Hill because I have a ton of points from overnight stays at the Med Center Wyndham here during chemo and get a free night. (cancer must be good for something, right?)

    We're going to take a comprehensive tour ('total experience' - LOL) on Friday so we can get an over-view and pin point what things we just MUST spend more time doing Saturday. My BFF has never been to Boston before & I haven't been in 25 years when I mostly stayed down by Brookline for work, except for some tourist stuff when my then high school son came to meet me one summer. She's thinking about walking the Freedom Trail on Saturday. I'm listing things I'd like to see/do in more detail but not making firm plans yet. Sunday afternoon 10/4 we board the Royal Caribbean ship for Portland, ME; Bar Harbor, ME; St. Johns NB; and Halifax NS. And the next Sunday we'll go directly from the ship to the airport & home.

    Susan, Lacey, Bedo - anyone else have some recommendations about what we MUST see or where we MUST eat? First day's tour has lunch stop at Quincy Market ??? Is there a good hole in the wall place? BFF wants to at least have a drink at the Parker House. Since Houston is the 4th largest city in the US, we want to skip anything that's a chain which we alreadt have - like Ruth's Chris or Eddie V's or Mortons, or Smith & Wollensky, etc. I want to eat fish & fish & more fish - crustacean & otherwise. My BFF doesn't really like fish that tastes like fish, but she eats sole & fried fish & most other things. We both love Italian. She wants bakery treats, I want real bagels. We've been friends since 1973, but never traveled together since her DH just died last year. Should be hilarious since we're both strong, controlling women.

    If anyone has time to meet for a meal,or even a quick glass of wine or dessert, please PM me and we'll see if we can get a group together. Would love to meet some of you. We figure we're OK Saturday for breakfast or lunch or dinner, or Sunday for breakfast or brunch. We're clever enough to figure out the "T" as long as we're not schlepping around our luggage, so can meet anywhere sort of central.

    Sorry to hijack the thread. If nothing else, everyone will get to see the yummy restaurant recommendations. Dinner was the last Hatch Chili scone and cut watermelon.

    Minus, this is exciting! There are many places to eat that are not chains....and soooo many new places in the Seaport area which will probably be new to you if you haven't been here for several years. I will put on my thinking cap and try to come up with a list of possible restaurants that you can google and see what you think. I'm pretty free that weekend, so would love to meet up....hope the others can too. What fun!

    OK I'll put this on today. My DD is flying to Boston on Friday (Southwest) for a week. She met a guy online last year and he has been to see her twice here. DH and I have met him, he went on the April cabin "camping" trip with us. He is Chinese, 1st generation American. Susan you may know something about this company. He works for Cogo Labs in Cambridge and lives very near Harvard. This is my baby so I'm more worried about her flying than anything about Boston and her friend. He is very nice, polite. Participated in all of our silly cabin antics. They have talked semi-seriously if she could find a job in Boston - she works in logistics. But she says she can't see herself in Boston. Maybe they will settle on Austin if it becomes serious. DD does work for a Fortune 500 company (retail) but all the corporate stuff is here. She has a degree in operations/supply chain and 6 years in logistics. She knows the shipping of hard goods in and out. Anyway - back to food. He has made reservations at some place with appetizers only that you need reservations at least a month in advance. I'm sure they will eat out mostly though he does have a nice condo that is equipped with a kitchen lol. DD barely cooks some slow cooker stuff. I told her I expect pictures of anywhere they go. I've been as far as the Boston airport (1975) and the Army Corps of Engineers headquarters in ?Waltham maybe. DD is looking forward to y'alls cooler weather. It will be at least 97 here on Friday. I get to drive/pick her up in Dallas. Shopping here I come. Only problem is she leaves at 8:40 on Friday. Means getting her to Love Field by 7 I think. I dread driving in rush hour. I haven't driven in Dallas proper in 8-9 years and not anywhere near Love Field. I asked why she didn't fly out of DFW which might be 10-15 min from her apt. "Cheaper flight mom".

    Susan - your condo problems sound unbeleeeevable! I live out of the city limits, don't think you need much permit to do anything except septic stuff.

    Moon - I'm so sorry to hear about your SIL. Echo the cancer sucks.

    Not much cooking going on. Made a black bean enchilada casserole that the remainders have languished in the fridge. Mushed up garlic, olive oil black beans (supposed to be refried beans) with some salsa. Stuffed tortillas with that, bit of cheese and some ripe olives. More salsa, cheese over the top. I could see a bit of leftover chicken in there too. They were good but it was too much for us. Otherwise it's been brats and premade potato salad. Summer has returned.

    Luv - I hope your DD has a wonderful trip. The flight will be much easier than your drive to the airport. You have my commiseration for rush hour.

    My dad's 83 year old sister arrives on Thursday to spend a month with him. I am leaving Tuesday to go the Shipshewana/Middlebury Indiana area for 5 days of totally unplugged time among the Amish. Wouldn't you know that yesterday the visiting nurse said his legs were leaking...So today I went back and checked and the one is still doing it, so I called the Wound Clinic and the nurse said, YOU ARE GOING ON VACATION. I will talk to Dr. tomorrow a.m. and we will call you back with a plan.........

    I can assure you if you can fry it, roast it or top it with gravy, I will be eating it.....just saying.

    And one of my all time favorite places to eat has 40 kinds of pie.......lets just hope if I have any sugar loving mutated cancer cells anywhere in me they are in a comatose state for a few day while I binge...

    I have been reading all your reports with great enthusiasm, but sadly, have been too bloody sick to post myself. I spent 9 days with a fever, nausea, and a strange inability to eat food. Six pounds later, I seem to be on the mend. Food still tastes bad to me, but at least I am able to eat something close to a normal portion when I sit down. Days and days of only being able to force six bites of food a day..... found a few glimmers: chicken tortilla soup from the local Mexican restaurant, Lion'shead meatballs with soup from the Chinese spot, but then there were days that food just wasn't gonna' happen. I made food. I just couldn't eat it.

    But we have a DinnerThreadPerson coming to Boston!!!!! Local folks, let us plan a gathering that shows her SOMETHING that she might not find on her own. Or something that she might find, and would love doing with us! I need to look up her hotel, and then I can make some suggestions.

    Luv, the appetizer with a reservation could be any number of places around here. "Small plates" are quite the thing these days, and I can't imagine the spot that this young man has chosen isn't terrific! So the boy works for one of the really highly regarded web development firms, and he makes real money. Trust me..... I hope that your daughter LOVES Boston [though they will explore Cambridge more.] I know I do. Maybe she can imagine living here. It is a great place to be young and smart. Do you want my number just in case she needs an "escape?" I am happy to hear that you like the young man.

    Moon, that is one gorgeous baby. I too have dresses from my kid's childhood in a box, waiting for a baby girl to join our family.

    So the condo. I talked with several city departments, and the condo was actually a three-bedroom, but inspected as a two-bedroom [which is a big deal with space in a basement.] We had the inspection and this just sucked! We were already ignoring lots of red flags for the perfect floor plan. But, this report made it clear that this unit, instead of helping the kids build equity and wealth, it could suck them dry. And, as majority owners, suck us dry as well. We walked away this morning. This was hard, but not one of us regrets the choice. No regrets.... but the stress of this [since August 18th] has been horrid. I hope that the next "it" place is easier for us to deal with.

    I know I have missed folks. I apologize.....

    Dinner was mini meatloaves, last night's corn removed from the cob and some mashed potatoes. Plus we finished off the nectarine hand pies, which turned out quite tasty. Somewhat of a carb fest, except there was only a small portion of everything.

    Susan, what a lousy week! I really hope things turn around, I especially want you feeling better.

    My pcp has me on a symbicort inhaler to help with the lingering nagging cough and congestion. It's kind of trial and error for me since I've never used an inhaler. Takes more coordination than I would have thought lol! I'm wondering if I had that respiratory virus that's traveling around the country. From all accounts, it lasts a long long time.
