Exercise and well being during chemo and radiation

Octo- your weekend plans sound wonderful.. Cool, beautiful, and with many positively associated memories. You will make some more this weekend. I might have stayed in that dive motel! I Used to haunt thatarea a lot haha. Tell the whales I miss them.
I have to say the prospect of losing a great tree like that makes me feel that I and my problems are very, very small.
-
Now thinking of all the delicious fall foods coming up: apples, punkin (good as a savory! think hard squash), brussel(s) sprouts), parsnips....
-
QMC- love love love! PARSNIPS! Yum. So nutty or something.
-
Octo, your weekend sounds great, but I am so sad to hear about the Sequoias. How difficult it must be to be so close to the fires. Enjoy your time away.
Queen, we saw the first honeycrisp apples in the Greenmarket today. Passed them by in favor of peaches and plums. One of my favorite fall foods is roasted brussels sprouts with just a bit of salt and pepper.
I have been delinquent on the exercise front these last few days while getting ready for surgery. But for well being, I bought 50 lb. of Roma/plum tomatoes in the Greenmarket today and am canning as we speak. I have about 20 lb. in sauce and will get them done tonight, the rest tomorrow, I hope. Very satisfying.
-
Bacon and brussels sprouts for me. (drools) There's a 'heritage' farm on my way home from the Y that finally got around to putting in a grove of Honeycrisp trees a few years ago, and they've finally begun bearing. Bushels of #2 Honeycrisps for about half what the supermarket charges....
-
Yum. Applesauce!
-
Oh Rainny- I feel so silly. Seeing now it was plum TOMATOES! No wonder. My plums must have been picked before I moved in. Duh.
-
Katy, don't feel silly. I bought plums today, too. Just in eating, not canning, quantities. That kind of day at the greenmarket where you can barely squeeze through the stands because everyone is out there!
-
1 hr stairmaster level 7, .5 hrs elliptica, mld x 2!!! Cause i whacked my arm good, 200 abs. Making mini quiches for next weeks breakfasts..oh yeah. And schmaltz 😊l
-
Walked all over north portland today enjoying a neighborhood yard sale then home to pack for a couple of nights camping at the coast. Lots of walking along the beach and frisbee with the dog on the menu for the next few days.
-
50 minutes on Keiser spin bike. Had to stop because granddaughter woke up from nap and wanted grandma!
-
Sloth- how far south? Don't forget if you get to the Coos Bay Area our dogs could play in the back yard together while we sip limoncello! You could pitch your tent in the backyard, or just sneak into the guest room. I won't tell. My door is open, seriously.
And Jen- how I adore quiche... I love eggs, the veg, the cheese, and ...er....um.....the crust. What kind are you making? Do you make your own shells or do you have a good brand to recommend? I made a quiche recently and for one person that whole pie was hard to handle. It would be nice to make individuals and freeze some.
-
(perks up) I'd be interested in making quichelets myself...muffin tins, perhaps?
-
Queen and Katy, you guessed it! Muffin tins! And I made mine crust less in the intrests of healthy living lol. Bacon, tomato, basil, and arugula with hqbanero cheese. Pretty tasty and easy to grab for breakfasts. I also put a dab of amaranth flour in to give them some fabric lol
-
(taking notes, considering quiche filling ingredients) Swiss Chard a possibility for me, certainly when I've got mine going in the back yard.
Swimming today, and glad to be back at it, though my left pectoral's a bit sore. No surprises there.
-
Littleblue, Please post your recipe. Sounds delicious!
No exercise for me for the past few days. Had to have a colonoscopy and endoscopy yesterday and time was 1:30, so only liquids Thursday and nothing Friday until after procedures. I was so weak. This Cancer stuff and all the tests suck! I need a break!
-
Sunshine: life's like that sometimes! My sympathies--did you manage to at least have something soothing afterwards?
-
Katy I've only got two free days so I'm heading to cape lookout. I'd love to get down to your place sometime, it looks so relaxing. And I'm still holding out for a trip to the Japanese gardens here with you. Maybe when the maples are turning colors in the fall?
-
Yes-Sloth- the Japanese Gardens are still on the list! I'm pretty flexible so maybe you could alert me to when the big color is coming?
I'm also contemplating a trip to the McKenzie Bridge area, and the Aufderheide. Might be able to do a combo. Maybe while the roof and kitchen/bath work is going on, which is coming up soon.

Last night's dinner: tomato salad, halibut with a corn salsa, peach cobbler and ice cream, at my favorite Monterey Peninsula restaurant....followed by a short walk on the Coast Guard pier just after dark to enjoy the twinkling lights along the bay and the fresh, cool (but not cold yet) breezes. That was it for my exercise yesterday but the good air really, really helped my sense of well being!
feel good enough to try a few miles at Point Lobos later this am.

Linda & Katy: we lived in OR in 2000-2001 Alan had just finished law school and got a clerkship for the 9th circuit court of appeals. We lived in Beaverton, both worked in Portland. I loved it there. We would go to cannon beach a lot. We did a bunch of hiking. It was so lovely. I really didn't want to move back to LA.
-
Octogirl: That sounds so yummy! I think my taste buds must be back to normal because everything sounds so good to me. The jokes on me though. I can't eat too much or my stomach gets uncomfortable after my DIEP.
I make a vege quiche now and then. It's pretty labor intensive though and probably not all that healthy. I use cauliflower, red pepper, broccolini, onion and cheddar and gruyere cheese. I make my own crust in the food processor. But I think it would be a lot for one person to eat. If you could put them in muffin tins, you could probably freeze them.
I did 15 min on the elliptical yesterday and 30 today. VERY slow per my ability and doctor. But I need to regain my energy somehow. I have never been this exhausted.
-
Octogirl, your dinner sounds beyond wonderful. You can get halibut here, but it's a whole different thing on the west coast. Peach cobbler sounds spectacular!
-
5 miles today... Ran 3 of those, walked 2 of those
-
Eileen I love Cannon Beach. We stayed at a place I think is called the Surf Motel, old school and kind of funky, but right on the beach!
-
Hi ladies!
went to cross fit 4 times this week. happy today is rest day.
I don't know the rules on BCO about promoting a fundraiser, but I'm joining together with my new gym and Barbells for Boobs which is a nonprofit dedicated to early detection and screenings for young women under 40 and men. The link is below in my tagline should any of you feel like helping out.
Happy weekend!
-
Allison- good for you for starting that exercise...especially when it hurts!
Octo- the meal, the walk, the fresh air, all sounded great. I'm sure it was very good for your psyche and your physical self as well.
I've been having a lot of trouble sleeping. As in waking up at 1:30am and never getting back to sleep. No naps, trying to follow good sleep hygiene, but just struggling. The last two nights I felt dangerously triggered and tried knocking myself out with combination cocktails designed and prescribed for this purpose. Limited results. Definitely getting in the way of my exercize and well- being. Ugh.
-
worked out..applied grease. Found what feels like a new lump under the scar next to my sternum on my prophylactic side. Popped two ativan. Freaking out.
