Thanks, pwilmarth. I have dry desquamation as you described. I'm still treating it with Miaderm and Aquaphor to reasonably good effect. I have done a heroic job of not picking at it!
Midgiemoon, thanks for your update!
-
20/21 today. I showed the RO nurse my raw skin under my boob. She said it didn't look bad at all and normally she would even call in a rx for it but since I'm moving Friday and she is expecting it to get so much worse (gee thanks) she is calling in one with 4 refills. How bad will this thing get?!
-
This is a picture of my raw, denuded skin on Sunday. As you can see, it's quite red and inflamed. And painful.
The top picture is from last night after 48 hours of Silver wound gel and Tegaderm.
-
Ouch!
-
You poor thing!
-
ouch!!!!!
-
The good news is that it is better.
-
Oh wow- that looks painful..
-
Hi all!
Pwilmarth - that looks so painful! Thanks for the tip about silver wound gel and Tegaderm. I am at 17/28 and so far so good, no skin changes except maybe a tiny bit pinker in spots.
Midgie, glad things are going so well for you now! It gives the rest of us hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel!
I have been dealing with two different cancers (well, really three...each of my two breast tumours were different types) for nearly two years and I am sick of cancer disrupting my life. All I can say is...this had better be the end of it! I want my old life back!

Did anyone notice muscle/internal pain with rads? When I take a deep breath the radiated side hurts. I can't tell if it is a lung thing or a muscle thing, but the nurse didn't seem concerned/have any real recommendations to help it. Also, any recommendations for remedies for radiation sore throat? Aside from gargling with that numbing stuff they gave us for mucositis? Thanks!
-
Littleblueflowers: (perks up) Yes, noticing muscle pain on the surgified/radiated side, though not to the point of hurting when I breathe deeply. Yet. And sore throat, though that's probably in part due to my overwrought digestive system strictly abjuring me this morning to NOT get it up so early in future..
So no answers, but an alert interest answers in whatever suggestions others might have.
-
Yes. Lung or muscle or flesh, I don't know which.
-
Again, we suffer as a group! Its kind of like boot camp..or cult initiation... Hmmm...I'm just guessing that muscles get as hashed up as our skin does. My RO just said that muscle fibers would stick together and it was important to stretch. I'm wondering how to lubricate the whole system, if that is even possible. For my throat, since ice cream makes me extremely sick since chemo- I tried a mix of honey, warm water, and coconut oil. Mostly I'd just like to avoid infection. My Eustachian tubes on the radiated side are swollen and my ear is crackly too, so I'm guessing rads are pissing off the whole system.
Queenmom, has anyone told you you have an excellent writing style here? I really enjoy it.
-
yes, sore tight muscles for me.
21/21 today! I finished camp. Yay! I am alarmingly red and very sore under the boob. And very tired. But oh so glad to be done. And I do t need to start tamoxifen for at least a month. RO doesn't think I need it so he wants me to double check with my new MO (that he recommended) in Florida. We are moving tomorrow. So glad I can leave all this treatment stuff here in California and start fresh with everything in Florida. Yes I'll need follow ups but no more radiation! Woo Hoo
-
Congrats CAMommy! What a milestone, eh? Safe travels tomorrow & wishing you the best on the other end!
-
CAmommy: LOUD CHEERS! no more radiation, and the lovely feeling of starting over in a place that doesn't have all the memories of past medical treatments (I still can't walk bast my neurosurgeon's office without flinching, though he and his staff were lovely)
Littleblue: honey/warm water/coconut oil sounds like a lovely idea for irritate throats; I'd hesitate to eat too much ice cream even though I'm not allergic to it. I'm getting the Eustachian tube clogs as well.though I do tend to congestion anyway--my PCP's got me on Nasocort. Hydrate hydrate hydrate, I guess. Not sure what to do about the 'stuck muscle fibers'. Massage in addition to the stretching?
-
LBF, QMC, and KSusan: I also experienced pain with deep breathing. My RO said it was inflammation of the muscles and prescribed Norco. I resisted, as Norco is a migraine trigger for me. But eventually, I had to give in and take it for a few days. The inflammation decreased once I finished whole breast radiation and moved to boosts, so I switched to Advil, which was all I needed by then.
I've heard that if you're trying to tell whether muscle or lung problems are causing your pain with deep breathing, ask yourself whether it feels like you've got a bunch of rubber bands around your chest or whether you're wheezing. If it's rubber bands, it's probably muscular. Personally, I felt like some giant was squeezing me in its grip (perhaps that's how Fay Wray felt when King Kong was waving her around?).
For the throat, how about popsicles?
Congrats to CaMommy!
-
In part a rubber band, and in part pain at the attachments (sternum and shoulder). Oddly, it's not while I'm actually getting the radiation (yet) but afterwards.
-
Again, so reassuring to be part of a group experiencing the same symptoms. Its King Kong squeezing me, although not too tight yet. I guess i should bring up the Eustachian tube irritation to my RO and see if he will give me anything, since its clearly related to rads. I also have always had trouble with my sinuses etc- chemo really irritated them and my throat in the same way. Ah the fun never ends!
-
Yep, I also had the shoulder pain. Still have a little bit of it, even though the rubber bands have loosened.
I'm in Eustachian tube hell. The outset coincided with high pollen counts here in Chicago, so I thought it was due to allergies. Now that I'm hearing about others who are experiencing it, I will watch this space for news of remedies!
-
So far, faux Mucinex for me--antitussive and phlegm-loosener, great for when my thoat and inner ears are on the warpath. But your mileage may vary.
-
Thanks, QMC. I'm taking Allegra-D and just started with the Flonase. Maybe I'll change my approach and try to thin the phlegm instead of dry it up.
Sadly, I received several lovely deliveries of flowers when I finished rads last week and had to give all but one bouquet away because the sneezing and itchy eyes made me miserable. I kept the orchids and made a note to myself about picking them when sending flowers to sick friends in the future.
-
I'll keep that in mind too! Or at least check with family if you're not sure.
-
I finished rads today. 28/28. Boy oh boy I am sore and blistered. I carried a frozen water bottle around work today, neatly tucked under my boob. It really helped. I did not expect this much irritation but started blistering 2 weeks ago and it has continued to get worse but it is OVER! Now to get port removed and try to get back to normal. Whatever, that is. This board has been a wonderful encouragement I don't post often but it's my go to when I have questions or need reassurance all is normal Thanks ladies!
-
Congratulations, CAMommy and Kniterly!
I've got a little ear trouble, too. I hadn't been thinking about that as potentially a radiation effect!
-
Hurrah, Kniterly! (holding an icepack to my irradiation zone in sympathy)
-
CAMommy and Kniterly, Congratulations!! It's been a long road, but we did it!! Today is my last day of rads super excited!! CAMommy, good luck on your move and a fresh start is always a good thing. I'm sorry Kniterly that you had so much irritation, I have been pretty lucky, just a spot under my boob that was really sore and raw for a day or two. I hope that it starts healing soon for you and good luck having your port removed, normal? what is that!!??
-
Hi all,
I was told that I need to have radiation after my chemo and exchange surgery. It is only suppose to be on the lymph nodes.....has any one here done just the lymph nodes? I don't really understand the reasoning behind it, or how they only do the nodes..... Any suggestions?
Julie

Congrats to CAMommy, Kniterly and 6doggies. You made it.
For me, 19 down and 9 to go. Everything is holding up ok. I can wear anything for an hour or two, but after that it gets to be uncomfortable. Yesterday I ditched my bra around midmorning at work. I was prepared and wore an undershirt under my blouse. Then topped it with sweater. It's really cold were I work. No one was the wiser. I shifted back to my bra before I left work. I think I'll shop for a silk scarf this weekend to put under the girls.
-
I have moist desquamation. What a word. Can I use those burn wound pads on it (like the next care things)? it hurts a like a ********. I am putting the silversulfer stuff they Rx me.
I woke up this morning to goopy gunk under the boob. I'd rather have nothing touch it. It's so painful. My armpit is swollen and painful but no moist desquamation yet.
