Nerve Blocker before lumpectomy Yes or No?
Hi All
I was wondering about the nerve blocker offered before lumpectomy. Good idea? I went for pre-op today and they mentioned that it would be offered, but I would rather make an informed decision before I am in the OR.
Would greatly appreciate any input, experiences

I had nerve blocker before my umx. It made my recovery and pain control better .

I read your question earlier, and amazingly enough, I just ran into this article totally coincidentally. That nerve block sounds like an excellent idea. Of course, I don't know what the downside of the nerve block might be. http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/812680

Marie Therese - I wanted to have it prior to my lx. but the jerk of an anesthesiologist refused to do it. If I had it to do over again I would have stood my ground and asked right then and there for a different anesthesiologist. I'd say that if your hospital is willing to facilitate it, it's a good idea. There are studies that seem to support its role in reducing recurrence. See the thread on pre/intra operative Troradol as well.

I had the nerve block. I didn't know I was going to have it until preop. My anesthesiologist was awesome. He explained the scary risks, but obviously very very rare. They pushed a little sedation before I got the shots, so I'm a little fuzzy on it but I was completely awake and I don't even remember it hurting very much at all. I had very little pain after the surgery so I'm not sure how much the nerve block applied to it . It must've helped a lot. I iced for over 24 hours afterwards and only took one narcotic pain pill. Ibuprofen the rest of the time. I don't really understand why it would affect recurrence, but I'm very pleased that it appears to maybe help. I would recommend it.

thanks for the input. It turns out it was not offered to me as pre admission testing said they would.

Nobody offered and my pain was VERY manageable. I took one pain pill the first day.
I think it depends where the turmor is and how much breast is disturbed. I did not need drains. My tumor was on outer upper edge of breast and easy to get. My armpit sentinel node wound hurt more, and even that was more discomfort than hurt.

No one offered it (the epidural-like nerve block procedure) to me for my quadrantectomy or mastectomy. I think my doc only uses it for recon. I had general anesthesia
I was given nerve pain pills after the mastectomy.
