Mistakes happen. Right?

is it possible for an u/s and mammogram to be wrong? They both show the same mass, same characteristics. Is it possible that when they go in for the biopsy, that it could have been a mistake and there is nothing there? Or is it even possible for solid masses to come and go with your cycle? All of the terms used to describe the mass they found in my left breast have nothing to do with a cyst, so that's why I'm wondering if solid masses disappear. I'm hoping I go in, and this is all just a mistake/misunderstanding.

I don't know, but didn't want to leave you hanging here. I do know that 80% of all "problems" seen initially aren't cancerous. I hope that helps, and let us know either way, okay?

I think the mammo and ultrasounds are usually right about there being a mass there, but they can't tell if it's cancer. (Yes, life's more complicated than that.) Well, that's what the biopsy's going to confirm, one way or the other. A sample of tissue really is the gold standard. Another "Let us know how things turned out?"

    Hi missarmy:

My mind went through all sorts of scenarios like your is doing now. After your suspicious ultrasound and mammogram (ACR BiRads Category 4), a biopsy was recommended to figure out if the mass is malignant or benign. The reason they do the biopsy (take some cells out and have a pathologist assess them), is that they cannot know what it is by just looking at it. A benign result is possible. So it might not all be a big mistake, but a good outcome is still possible.

Hoping for a benign result for you.

missarmy04, It's perfectly normal to feel the way you do. It would be hard not too. Unfortunately, cancer got me this time, but about 5 years ago I went through the mammogram, ultrasound, and mri scare. While I was waiting for results, I just knew it would be bad. My husband was deployed and it was just me and my daughter. She was about 14 at the time, and I remember thinking I needed to spend quality time with her because cancer had my number. I took her to so many amusement parks and just went crazy. Then my results came back benign even with birads 4. Most do come back benign. My surgeon just told about the daughter of his colleague who they really thought had cancer. These were two doctors who see films all the time. The biopsy proved them wrong. It happens. He told me other conditions can mimic cancer. I wish the best for you, but if you do find yourself on our side of the fence, please know that you will be welcomed here with much support, wisdom and knowledge. Take care.
