Waiting for biopsy results

edited September 2015 in Waiting for Test Results

Whew, it's been a crazy few days.

A few weeks ago I was having pain and felt a lump. Wednesday I went in for the mammogram and ultrasound. They found a second lump on the ultrasound. Thursday morning I had a biopsy. Tuesday I go in for an MRI, I should also have biopsy results on Tuesday. Wednesday I meet with the surgeon. At the biopsy, the radiologist made it sound like surgery wasn't for sure. So it seemed like they just wanted to get everything lined up that they may need.

I was looking in my electronic chart for the biopsy orders and came across the mammogram results. The bi-rads was marked a 5, so that has me concerned. After the ultrasound and mammogram on Wednesday, the radiologist talked to me and said that there were some moderately suspicious things, hence the biopsy. But the 5 has me thinking this sounds more serious than moderately suspicious.

I'm 32 with 3 kids (7, 5, and almost 3). My husband has been wonderful and is telling me to think positive. I naturally go more towards planning for the worst, so everything else is good news. We've got a good support system through our church, the school our oldest two attend, plus my mom is nearby.

So for me, it's just waiting that is hard. Even though everything is happening really fast. I just want the biopsy results so it can be "okay, on to the next step."

Biopsy results came back today. It is cancer. They said it'd be another week before we got better/more details. Nice to have answers and we've been incredibly blessed already with our support system here.

Oh wow, I'm in almost the exact same boat as you. (33, 2 kids - 5 & 2, had pain and a lump a few weeks ago, then mammogram/ultrasound Monday) The waiting is so hard! You are so incredibly lucky that you got your results back so quickly! I have almost an identical story to yours, and also had my biopsy Thursday. I likely won't get results til Wednesday at the soonest, because of the holiday weekend.

I'm sorry that it is cancer, but thankful you were able to get that big unknown answered. I'd love to keep in touch and see how everything goes.

After the kids are in bed is the hardest for me right now. I'm left alone with my thoughts running wild! I just need to get an answer

Yes, I was incredibly surprised that the results came back so soon.

How are you feeling after your biopsy? Today was still a bit sore with some pain.

    Hi skittle girl-

Sorry to hear of your recent Dx. On the positive side, it's great you received your results so quickly because the waiting can be agonizing. Also, it sounds like you have a great support system in place. I'm not sure if they gave you any details but the next few weeks will probably feel like a whirlwind for you as you learn about your cancer and make treatment decisions. These boards are so helpful through the process. Keep us posted and let us know how you are doing. Hugs!

Aggiemegs- I will keep my fingers crossed for a benign result for you. Keep busy, I know the waiting is hard. Hugs!

    Dear Skittlegirl,

I am sorry that your results came back as cancerous. I had my biopsy done about 3 hours ago and should get my results on Monday - the waiting feels horrible.

Everyone says I should feel positive but I am afraid to feel positive. Does this sound crazy?? It will be so much harder to take if my results are not good.

I admire the grace and strength with which you've accepted your diagnosis and I pray for the same.

Wishing you all the very best!

skittlegirl - yes, I was pretty sore still yesterday, with a little pain, and still a bit sore this morning. Right as I was sitting on the couch feeling sorry for myself last night, because when the boys go to bed, my mind runs away with me, my 5 year old started puking, so I had to deal with that! No time to feel sorry for myself then

I hope the soreness goes away soon, aggie.

Yes, the kids definitely keep you from getting too focused on feeling sorry for yourself. I hope your son is feeling better.

Hi EIJ. Just wondering...does your doc give results on holidays? I'm wondering why my doc said I would have to wait until Tuesday because today is Labor Day. It doesn't seem right that we have to wait on holidays, ya know?

My preliminary biopsy results are on my electronic chart. IDC. One site is grade 3. The other site is grade 2.

Skittle girl- how are you doing? When do you meet with your BS? Was there any other information on the hormonal status (ER and PR) or Her2?

I am okay. Was really hoping it wasn't invasive, so that was a letdown .

The other biopsy results are pending. I am hoping that tomorrow or Friday that information will be available.

I have my meeting with the surgeon today. Yesterday was my annual exam. The NP said to be prepared for them to be aggressive since I am so young. The meeting isn't until this afternoon. I just want to get it done with and hopefully have some more answers.

In my experience, meeting with the surgeon started to alleviate the anxiety. I felt we had a plan in place and that really helped. I also consulted with three BS. My case was pretty straight forward but it also made me feel better that they all were reccommendating the same Tx plan. Hope you feel better after today's appointment. Let us know how it goes :)

The meeting went well. It was a ton of information. I should know tomorrow about the hormone receptors.

He wants to start chemo first. I go in on the 21st to get the MediPort placed.

I will also get another ultrasound and maybe biopsy because the lymph nodes looked a little off. But he thinks it might just be because of the biopsy or MRI dye.

I will be meeting with a medical oncologist. And a genetics counselor.

Once we get to surgery it will be at least a mastectomy. Maybe double depending on what the genetics tests say and what I want. Reconstruction (when I want it) will be done in Seattle since it's beyond what he is comfortable doing.

Sounds like you have a plan in place. Hopefully, that is comforting. There are many boards on this site that might be helpful to you in the coming months. If you know when you are starting chemo, you might join the monthly chemo board. I heard they are very supportive and great way to share information about SEs and treatment. Keep us posted on your results. Hugs!

Just saw your post. With her2 positive, I believe herceptin will be in your future. There is an active board for that. It should provide lots of information too. :)
