So...whats for dinner?
Comments
-
Fever broke today and I had a craving for a pork chop after my second client session of the day. Stopped at the "so expensive you shouldn't have to ask" butcher and picked up two bone-in center cut chops that look gorgeous. Bit pricey at $10 for two, but still a ton cheaper than eating out. I have some local red cabbage braising as a nod to German fare, and Mr. 02143 is making the one prepared food he still eats: Uncle Ben's Long Grain and Wild Rice, original. Not my favorite, so I won't have that, but there is just a touch of potato salad lurking in the fridge that I might enjoy.
Lacey, Six Chimneys can be an absolute home run, and then sometimes it is like a second, not as excellent, restaurant. When I used to perform in Plymouth regularly, we often would head there for a post-rehearsal, pre-concert dinner. Been a long time since I have eaten there though.
Hot as blazes here today. Zapping everyone's energy except for Rascal Cat No 1 who found my stash of q-tips which are now spread throughout the house.
*susan*
-
susan - the cat with the q-tips made me laugh, although you probably didn't.
I ate half a roast beef sandwich and some roma tomatoes and cucumber with blue cheese at about 4 pm so I think I will skip dinner and just do chilled shrimp over romaine with a Louis dressing for DH when he gets home from the gym. Not very exciting ut it gets the job done! I am cooking tomorrow - all the stuff for DH and DD to nosh on while I am gone in California (yay for me!)
-
Moon - I love the food nazi comment. You haven't been patrolling my menus, or Bedos.
Last night was 1/2 an avocado, 1/2 a tomato, 1/2 a can of shoestring beets, & a handfull of black olives with Hidden Valley Ranch new Sweet Chili dressing - accompanied by a 1/2 of a leftover pumpernickel bagel heated w/lots of butter. As you can see, no lettuce in sight & still eating leftovers. Tonight I never got around to dinner, but managed 2 glasses of a lovely Malbec wine from Argentina while I was working on spread sheets. Dessert will be popcorn. I have two lovely T-bone steaks in the fridge for tomorrow.
Susan - so glad to hear the fever's gone. Lacey - bittersweet indeed going back home.
-
Susan, I totally agree with your comment about Six Chimneys. We've had some good meals and some undesirable ones there, and actively avoid risking that most times we are in Plymouth....but took the chance last evening since choices were few. I hope you enjoyed that pork chop
We ate early this evening after sweating bullets all day cleaning and clearing out for the return home. Using anything that was left in the fridge, I made a big salad and added slices of avocado, then unveganized the pasta salad I made a few nights ago. Thankfully, our trip home in separate cars was the fastest of the summer, very little traffic and we made it in less than two hours...an elusive time with the highways being more crowded and having road work this summer. So we are home and the gym awaits before eating out again tomorrow.
The scale awaits as my superego... -
Sunshine, here's a pretty good tutorial for yogurt making. I add powdered milk to mine and strain it for Greek yogurt. Although I have yogurt maker now, I made it successfully for years using a covered pot and a heating pad.
http://www.thekitchn.com/how-to-make-yogurt-at-home-cooking-lessons-from-the-kitchn-125070
-
Susan, so glad the fever broke and you were hungry. A healthy sign. How do you braise red cabbage? I have a beautiful red cabbage in the refrigerator that I bought at a farmer's mkt because it was beautiful.
Lacey, hope the scale isn't cruel.
I don't think I would bother to make yogurt. I like the Fage plain Greek yogurt that I buy. Also another brand. But I just use it in breakfast smoothies. Maybe I would change my mind if I tasted the home-made. I know the home-made ricotta is 90 per cent better than the kind available to me in the supermarket.
Last night's dinner was red beans (kidney) cooked with onion, garlic and bacon as the meat seasoning. I started the beans in a pot and transferred to a slow cooker. They were delicious, the beans tender and a creamy gravy. Served over brown rice. Side was a simple slaw with vinegar and mayo dressing, cabbage out of a bag.
Tonight will probably be fish out of the freezer. UNLESS we catch some fish this morning and we'll have fresh fillets. We were going out yesterday morning but the outboard wouldn't start so we played golf instead. Beautiful day for either fishing or golf. It's fall here in northern MN.

So the saga continues..... Bad agent Irene evidently was not happy that the "profit" on this building was already reduced by $200,000 [yes that is a real number] and started to fantasize about keeping what commission there is going to be all to herself. In fact, she never presented our third offer to the owner [or its resubmission] ever hopeful that some young [and stupid] group would come to her many open houses and use her for both sides of the sale. Good agent April got in touch with that office's broker, and when even that failed, started discussions with the Boston Board of Realtors about ethics violations. We resubmitted for a fourth time last time, using bad agent Irene's precise wording as sent via email OVER a week ago. As of noon today, we have a signed offer. We made our first offer on August 18th! What a saga. Now we have to move quickly since they insisted on a very fast closing date. Already started to move our money around to have it in place when needed.
Dinner is grilled chicken thighs, three lonely fingerling potatoes and a huge green salad. Mr. 02143 will mop the chicken with our latest batch of Inner Beauty sauce which is fiery hot! Can't wait. I do hate how much much taste buds are dulled on this drug protocol, but spicy just appeals these days.
I did a riff on this cabbage recipe: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/food-network-ki.... It wasn't perfect. I substituted Apple Cider vinegar which makes more sense to me, but I had to increase the amount dramatically since as written, the recipe was on the "too sweet" side for my tastes.

susan - glad you finally had some good condo karma, and hoping everything goes smoothly from here. Our situation fell apart - but I am bothered by our agent also representing the prospective buyer, thus selling her own listing and maximizing the profit for herself. How can she possibly adequately and faithfully represent both sides of the transaction. Even though it is legal to do this it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Am leaving for California in the morning so doing some cooking for DH and DD today, as well as running errands, etc. Just made some sausage and peppers over brown rice, chili, pasta salad, bean salad, red potato salad. Will cook and freeze portions of chicken breast and steak to put over salads. Last week I did some stuffed shells and sauce and already put it in the freezer. I will also get some buns for burgers and dogs, they go well with all of the salads.
-
Special, I know.... doesn't seem that they can actually have both parties' best interests in mind. It was very common for many years of course, but it doesn't feel quite "kosher." I can't believe your trip is almost here! Gosh I hope you have a brilliant time!
*susan*

I agree about the double agent issue, although our agent represented us and the builder of our house and did a very excellent job for us. Perhaps because it's a small town. At any rate, I'm very happy for you and your family Susan, and like special k, wish you smooth sailing from here on.
Had a nice visit with DSIL and DBIL with some very fine food. I have to stop this marathon eating. We are heading to the gulf coast on the 20th for a week which will help.
Tomorrow we are washing the outside of the house, a yearly chore, then Friday the Geezer Brigade is heading to SIL's for one last go around of work.Fortunately it will only be in the 70s this time.
-
Monday night DSIL fixed a roasted pork loin seasoned with sage and garlic with roasted shallots and tiny new potatoes, a salad with a delicious mayo based dressing and her French bread. The next evening we had Italian beef sandwiches, again on her French bread, more salad and sauteed Brussels sprouts with bacon. Dessert both nights was fresh blackberry pie with ice cream. It was awesome. I hit the jackpot by getting to bring home two large jars of strawberry freezer jam that she made this spring from her crop. I really don't eat much jam but I love this on French toast which we had for breakfast this morning. Yesterday morning was a tomato bacon quiche and biscuits.
Dinners may be salad for the next few days except I promised dh pizza and he's not likely to forget.
-
Glad your fever broke Susan and it sounds just like just in time.
Been 17 years since we bought out here. Is it still the case that the realtor whoever it is is representing the seller? I know there used to be buyers' agents but we never had one. We did pretty good out here. Our realtor listened and did not show us stuff that we clearly would not wanting price wise. She learned quickly - we drove up to one house, DH took a look at the neighborhood and said "we're not even getting out". Pox on your agent Susan. May fleas infest all of her open houses lol.
Not sure what set my insides off but not well yesterday. DH fine so just my IBS probably. Better today. Guess it's ham steak and new potatoes with dill. Dig in freezer for some non starchy frozen vegies.
Have a great trip Special.
Ah Carole Fall. We had a hint this morning but back to heat this afternoon.
Pork roast - I think I may have to do some freezer digging lol. Sounds great.
-
Luv, not my agent.... the seller's agent. :-) My agent is the good agent April. *susan*
-
Susan - congrats. Is a signed offer the same as a purchase contract? Do I remember correctly that the kiddos will move first and you will take your time?
Nance - Not sure I'd loose weight on vacation, especially if they have good bread w/the fish. And think about that fried shrimp!!! Have fun.
Carole - How lucky to have real fall. Our nights have actually dropped to 76 a couple of times. Are you keeping track of the weather back home? BTW - how's your Mother doing?
Special - I don't know which is worse - trying to sell or trying to buy. I can't remember if you said close to Sacramento or close to Tahoe. Anyway - enjoy your visit & the sorting/cleaning/tossing exercise.
-
Sorry Susan. Yay for your good agent.
-
Minus, I usually opt for boiled or bbqd shrimp but it's mainly easier because I only eat three times a day and not so many tempering desserts in my face.
-
Thanks for the recipe link, Susan. Congrats on buying the condo. The "kids" must be happy.
SpecialK, hope you have a great trip. I know your dh and dd will be eating good food while you're gone.
Nance, could I please book a visit to your dbil and dsil? LOL.
I did catch a nice crappie this morning but we let him/her go back into the water when we didn't catch any more fish. It was so lovely out on the lake. And everything worked. The outboard. The trolling motor.
-
Carole, you can book a visit with me! I will even make you brownies!
-
Sounds like a winner, Nance!
Best-laid plans. My thawed fish fillets are in the refrigerator to be cooked tomorrow night. We ended up having grilled brats, cooked by the next door neighbor, who gave me a large zucchini and a couple of tomatoes along with instructions of how to cook them. The resort owner joined the neighbor and us and we had the brats, the zucchini, tomato and cheese dish, and some onions and potatoes cooked together. It was all rather impromptu.
-
Supper last nite was the rootbeer pork boneless ribkets. Actually they are very mesty, almost loin type. My DD2 stopped by with DGD1. We had fun. Baked the potatoes. And a sweet potato to share. Cooked frozen peas. The little one ate peas, sweet potato and gnawed on the pork. Made a lovely happy mess. So we gave her a bath in the kitchen sink with the spray which she loves. Got her in jammies and she fought sleep til they left. LOL. Gave them leftovers for her husband's lunch on 3rd shift. I'd have to freeze half of the one kabob and a whole one if they hadn't come over!
Tonight was left over chicken I thawed with leftover rice. LOL
-
Here she is. She's wearing the outfit I bought for her mother when she was in the hospital with a broken leg at about the same age. 9 months old, 33 years ago! LOL!

-
Cute, happy baby! Moon, I'm amazed that you kept the little dress all those years.
-
What a cutie patootie!
-
Adorable, spirited looking baby! What fun for you, Moon!
Penance yesterday....two hours at the gym. It actually felt good to work all those muscles, but I was pretty tired afterwards. I look forward to getting back into my gym routine, as does DH.
Meanwhile....our evening in Back Bay was lovely, especially when we walked from La Voile back to our car. It was so balmy out, it reminded me of our summer nights in Boston years ago. And, of course, the city is alive with folks back from summer vacations and all the college students having returned. Our dinner at La Voile, with the friends who now live in LA, was delightful, in part due to our lovely, efficient and spirited waitress who was serving the lion's share of tables, always with a smile. We all chose the fixe prix menu. I had the most delicious caprese salad (not called that)with arugula and the sweetest heirloom red, yellow and orange tomatoes. Entree was duck breast with cherry sauce over sweet potato puree, and sauteed spinach. Dessert was apple tart with almonds. We all enjoyed our food, the ambiance, and the chance to catch up with one another.
On our way home, we got lost due to a detour off the Mass Pike that took us into a remote neighborhood in a nearby upscale town. The narrow winding roads were not well lit nor marked with consistent "detour" signs and we ended up in a "dead end" of someone's beautiful circular driveway next to their mini mansion along with six other "lost" cars. Fortunately, SIRI got us out of that maze and we were home by midnight. I felt badly for the homeowners who probably hosted lots more cars in their driveway while that insufficiently marked detour was in effect.
Susan, I'm glad that the real estate transaction made a positive turn. So you do not need to move or put your house on the market now, right? The young 'ens must be very
happy!

Oh.....warning....medical rant...
Last week we learned from a doc friend that DH's primary care would be joining a concierge practice with a membership fee required to continue with him. DH has really liked this doc and he is certainly the most competent, caring, attentive one either of us has had over the years. So, when we returned from the lake, his primary care's letter had arrived and DH obsessed about it for a while, but decided to stay with him, expensive tho it will be. I totally support that, but it is annoying that so many of the best docs here are going that route.
While that was going on, I received a call from Walgreens telling me to immediately stop using the eye allergy cream I have just started to use again a couple of weeks ago, given my surge in allergic symptoms this season. Apparently, the cream has been recalled by its manufacturer. Great! So I called my ophthalmologist who was obviously not in the office and the secretary told me I could get an answer about what else might be scripted by next week. Really!!?? I explained that the eye itching keeps me awake nightly w/o meds and I would hope not to wait that long. She did get back to me later in the day, and I have a prescription now being filled.....of course now I'm a bit leery about using a new one....maybe it won't be a steroid cream. ****Update the script was never called in....will deal with that tomorrow******
Once this is taken care of, I worry about my ophthalmologist not being available since she has been out twice in the last few years for cancer treatment. She is a great doc. Oy!
The bigger issue for me right now is that I have to find another functional meds person to see for these allergies since the huge practice I went to is out of business, as of last month, and my nurse practitioner has not worked out her future work plan yet. I would prefer to continue with her, if possible. What a mess! Maybe I can just ride it all out for a while....as long as the new eye cream works.

End of rant....

Real estate rant: IT IS NOT A LEGAL THREE BEDROOM!!!!!!! Just went to the building department [I love love love my local government] and all the wonderful people pulled the permits and gave us advice, but the bottom line is, that third bedroom is not legal, at all. They made it look legal with the larger window, but the permit includes NOTHING about adding a bedroom. OMG! And, so, we wait to see how the fraudsters try to get out of this one. Oh, and they are trying to sell the parking spaces illegally as well!
*susan*
-
Oh dear, Susan the karma is back circling the drain. Good thing you did your due diligence!
Made BLTs on toasted potato bread tonight. Cukes and yellow pepper salad, and potato chips rounded out the pre-game meal.
-
Susan sorry to hear of more real estate troubles.
Supper tonite was nothing. I couldn't eat all day. Didn't feel right. Threw up a couple of times. Then I got a call from my DH. His sister stopped her tx. It wasn't working. She fought all she could. She will be in Hospice with palliative care only. She was dxd with recurrent BC that was mets the same week I was dxd with Stage 1. Cancer sucks . Please pray. I was hoping to see her next month when I go to Colorado for a wedding. My sis and I were road tripping home via Helena, Montana where she lives. Now I don't know whether to hope she hangs on a while or just goes home to be free. She is the second person I know who has finished the battle and gone into final care this week. Did mention I hate cancer?
Guess we all have to just live our life to the fullest so look out world here we come.
Sorry for the downer but who understands better.
Much love to all.
-
Oh Monica, I am so sorry. You are so right, cancer sucks big time. Hate is not a strong enough word for my feelings about it. I'm not sure there is one. I hope your stomach can feel better soon.
Susan, this just isn't going to be easy, is it? But you are on your game. Hoping this all works out in your favor.
Lacey, I understand the medical rant completely. I hate losing doctors, you invest so much in them. Hope the new eye med works for you. I just found out my insulin is not on next year's formulary so that means another change. I have to go through this every year. What a hassle, especially for the docs.
Dinner will be whatever we can catch after a day at DH's sisters house. Maybe with the fam.
We got half an inch of rain last night. Yay!
-
Moonflower: (alert--extreme understatement coming up) I can see that that news would put you completely off dinner.
