A wait-and-see approach is very common with fibroadenomas. They are a common benign breast condition, and in most women, do not increase their chances of developing cancer later on. Many will stop growing, posing no risk to the woman. The issue with removing them is that tend to come back, and removing them every time they regrow can cause the breast to become misshapen. That being said, if it continues to grow, many doctors will opt to remove it, as it can become a source of discomfort if it gets too big. The follow-up is likely to check it's size, to make sure it's not growing at a rapid rate. If it is, your doctor will probably want to discuss other options at that point.

I was diagnosed in May of 2014 with a fibroadenoma at 46. We did the every 6 month monitoring by ultrasound. At my recent US following in July of this year, the lump had grown considerably and is now just over 3 cm in size. (which I suspected on my own). I have surgery booked for September 8th. The rate in which it has grown makes me nervous about it being a phyllodes tumor. Given my age and the growth rate I believe it is best to have it removed.

If it is bothersome, I recommend talking to your doctor or surgeon about having it removed.
