I have used the i got bit by a shark on several occasions to which i usually get a "really"??? Then I follow up with no I have lymphedema breast cancers dirty little secret and explain what it is to make them feel really stupid to ask in the first place and then to educate i guess or make them think twice before asking a complete stranger whats wrong them.

Yesterday the Dentist asked what happened to my arm. I thought about amigil's answer "sex accident" and started chuckling, than couldn't answer the question without laughing, so I finally said "nothing, nothing at all".

Got a chance to use the "shark attack" line.

Bank teller says, what happened to your arm.I said shark attack! He says.....NOOOOOOO REALLLY!

I say, yup! He says, tell me about it and I say, well I would .....but YOU haven't got time!

He says excitedly, YES I DO...so tell me!

I said, half smiling, well actually it's from after cancer surgery but I bet you like the other story better.

Then he says, how long will you have to wear that,,,until it gets better? I said no, I am wearing this for life and merely smiled my way thru the whole episode!

    Yikes,,,some people's kids!!

CAN ANYONE BEAT THAT SHARK STORY!!!!

I have significant scars, from two hip replacements and a bmx (no reconstruction). When I go to the gym, I use the communal changing room. If anyone stares, I tell them I was bit by a shark. Usually it is dead silent after that.

I wear sleeves when I exercise, but people don't ask about them. Several other women at the gym also wear compression sleeves, so maybe people don't think they are comment worthy.

Sleeves and gloves can be dried in a dryer but with no heat. I like mine better when dried in a no heat dryer with a dry towel than just air drying.

I was intrigued by the title of this thread and just read through it. I am one of those people whose mother rightly taught me to never comment on another person's appearance. Once in college I met a guy who was on crutches with his leg in a cast. After chatting for several minutes he said, "Aren't you going to ask me what happened to my leg?" I just figured if he wanted me to know, then he would tell me. Anyway, I am appalled at the rude questions that people on this thread have related!

When wearing a plain compression set, I was tempted to say “covering up cat scratches" or “extreme sun protection” (both of which somewhat true); with the tattoo pattern, I'd say I was tired of the tats I had and didn't want to get new ones. But I just tell the truth. And I guess times have changed since this thread started, because nobody asks unless I've got the gauntlet on, and then they just ask “carpal tunnel?" or “hand problem?" More women are being dxed early with bc now than six years ago, or at least are open about it. But LE does need to come out of the shadows. More people have it than MD, MS, AIDS and Parkinson's combined!

ChiSandy, I think there's another factor at play here too. The less self-conscious we are about our garments, the less likely people are to ask about them. I've really noticed that when I walk into a group with confidence--even shake hands--I get fewer remarks than when I act hesitant or even just feel awkward. So I think a lot of the attention we draw to ourselves has to do with what WE are projecting, more than what we're wearing on our arms and hands.

    Just a thought,
    Binney

Agreed, Binney. And some people are curious or intrusive, so I think a both/and approach works well--wear it with confidence and have a couple of responses ready for different situations. It's clear to me that the people who have asked me (during air travel) had some idea it could be a BC thing and were trying to open a supportive discussion. I haven't had anyone argue with me about "it's to protect my arm," which I think is close enough.
