Laughing at myself

I am finished chemo and now on the other side of this (taking Tamoxifeno). I wrote this some time ago but didnt have energy to post. Thought I would share these funny moments with you all.

Laughing at breast cancer
People comment that I must be so brave because I am always laughing and looking at the funny side of things. I tell them if I don’t laugh I might cry.

I don’t know if an elevated sense of smell is an affect of chemo but it seems to be happening to me. Which leads to the funny moment… ok it’s a do-it-your-self joke, here are the facts- use your imagination:

· I have a keener than usual sense of smell.
· I don’t have much to do (don’t have the energy to do much)
· I have a cat.
· My cat has been neutered but he seems to forget this at times.
· I wear a light blue fuzzy hood type of thing on my bald head (Its for wrapping your hair when its wet- I wear it backwards like a hood)
· My hubby says it makes me look like a big Smurf.
· I think I smell something.
· Cats spray on furniture close to the floor.
· I decide to get on my hands and knees and am crawling around sniffing the furniture in the living room.
· Hubby walks by the living room and sees me.
· He doesn’t even ask!
· I realize how strange I must look, and start laughing.
· So now I’m by myself, laughing, crawling on the floor, wearing a blue fuzzy hood, sniffing the furniture and wondering if I have really lost the plot.!

One day I was feeling rather rough and shuffling around the apartment. I was in front of the mirror and saw myself. Bald head, stitches, scar and bump from recent port a cath insertion, scar of breast reconstruction, and lump of valve for the expansor. God I’m Frankenstein!!!!
Hubby (knowing I laugh at these things) said “No, honey your not Frankenstein, your more like Robo Cop, or the Terminator, or maybe Alien .. if that lump starts to move I’m outta here!!”

Hope everyone finds moments to laugh. Maria Jose

    Tks Maria..

    Yes, in distress
    we have to find
    time to laugh as well
    if at all possible.

    and re the smell:
    I could smell chemo
    when I took a shower
    on me... some years ago

    the odour just stayed
    it seemed

    Best to you

    Hugs

I have also laugh and enjoyed the company of 2 other women I have met during chemotherapy. We would get together once and a while. When we were all wearing headscarves instead of wigs we were laughing at how people are going to see us walking down the street and think that we are part of a sect. I suggested we get tambourines and chant a bit.
We went into a cafeteria and asked for juice. Here in Spain when you have a drink (we had juice) you get a small plate of some kind of snack called a ‘tapa’. The man at the bar was putting down a plate of pork chorizo and stopped and looked at us asked us if we eat pork, thinking we were Muslim (as he is). We had quite a laugh at that.
Now we all have hair, but it's really short- I went shopping with one and we were trying on clothes and giving opinions - then we realized how we looked and that people thought we were 'together' as a couple. Oh well let them think what they want.

I was dx on Sept 12 and had a left mast on Oct 3. I, too. laugh at every situation I can. My two teen-aged sons go right along with me. DH also laughs when he can. Sometimes people don't understand how we can laugh at what we laugh at. But my youngest, almost 16, told me the other day, "I can get a bald cap and (after putting my fake boob under his shirt) and go as you for Halloween!" I had a good laugh at that one. I haven't gone bald yet but I go Wed to the onc to get things started so I am looking at the middle of November for losing my hair. (I think) Soon after my dx I sat my kids down to ask them if they had any questions or concerns or any comments whatever, and they told me no, they didn't really have any. Then my 18 year old asked me if I could still do laundry. I laughed at him. He has really been a big help as has me younger one, along with Dh. But we laugh whenever we can. It is so much more fun.

I have been on the floor trying to find the cat pee myself. I am ROFLMAO . We don't have a cat now, but I spent lots of time on my hands and knees, with my nose pressed on the carpet! I agree, it's quite a sight. Add the Smurf hood to that and it must have been hysterical!

Thanks for sharing the laughs, Maria. Life is always a little easier when we laugh at ourselves

    P. S. I love going out for Tapas and Sangria when I'm in Chicago with friends!

When my wife, Kathy was D/X with her recurrance of BC, her Onc ordered a full body CT and PET scans. KAth went and had these done and a few days later we found out that she had multiple bone and liver mets. ANyway, here is the humorous part. The first page of her radialogy report was the head CT. Here is the actual wording from the radiologist....."Examination of the head reveals nothing remarkable found." We both looked at each other and burst out laughing. From that day forward, Kath would show whomever the report, get that great twinkle in her Eye and say, "See, I now have medical proof, I had my head examined and THERE IS NOTHING THERE!" Like all of you we found humor in everything. It was part of her battle plan and it worked for a long time.

The day I was leaving for my mastectomy I emailed my family and close friends asking them to send me all the "the one boobed lady walked into the bar" jokes they could find. I needed all the laughter I could get. (BTW no jokes like that were found.)
