Moon, so good to see your posts and adorable pix of the DGDs. They are precious!

After many errands today and a virtuous long visit to the gym (I just took some Ibuprofen!) and return to our stretching class, I made a really tasty and healthy dinner. The amaranth I bought is so huge that I wanted to make another dent in it, so I made a really delicious, healthy stirfry with lots of that green, garlic, both sweet onions and scallions, strips of sweet red peppers and carrots, ginger, soy sauce and a sesame oil splash. We had it over black rice and accompanied it with AMelia's tomato salad. DH and I were feeling virtuous..... and totally satisfied. Yum! :)

I must report that I finally finished DGS's little Frozen blanket and had no idea how challenging it would be. It should not have been that hard, but it had to do with the print shape and my compulsivity, and then how it is hard to see through opaque fabric to make sure the blanket binding edge is being caught just right. Oy....done!!!! I may not be so fast to do another one of these. I suspect that the "Chinese factory girls" are much more adept at making these than I....I would hope that they do not experience the same frustrations...especially since their wages are barely more than mine! :/

Here is the dinner and the blanket (with apologies to all of those who are "Frozened" out):

Never really thought I'd be making hot pink nap blankets.

susan - wow on your anniversary dinner, and congrats! Sorry this is so belated - I was in lunch prep mode. I smiled at the pants buying for the French cousin - you are a good hostess!

lacey - the blankie looks fab! Here is a link for the almond milk mozzarella:

eric - lol on the fridge cleaning pic!

moon - yay for seeing you and a new DGD! Can't believe how big your other is!! Time flies!

luv - thank you for that compliment - we had fun and I love having the ladies over!

Dinner tonight was a tortellini salad with pesto, a green salad with garden cherry tomatoes and some swordfish. I must have let myself get too dehydrated and empty. Eating made me wildly nauseous. But, I pushed through and ate as much as I could, but it was pretty pathetic overall. So disappointing since dinner was delicious!

We may have found "the condo"..... can't believe the price per square foot, but this is the one that seems the most practical and fits the two family unit's potential needs. We will have to decide if we want to make an offer by 5pm tomorrow. Second walk through at 8am, drive to NH to get the French cousin, meeting with the kid's mortgage broker at 4pm, and then either submit an offer or not.

Moonflower.... love love love the pictures.

Lacey, I know nothing about "frozen" but I nominate you for the Nana of the Year! "Frozen" might be the Arial of the current world, eh?

Moon - sooooo glad to see you. I've been hoping you'd come back. Great pictures. Thanks for sharing.

Lacey - the stir fry looks delicious & the blanket is a work of art. I know there's love in every stitch - along with a few curses that flew out the window - LOL.

Susan Sorry about your tummy. I hope the condo works out.

Dinner tonight is chili cooked from scratch. Ingredients are pinto beans that I cooked first with bay leaves and some garlic until the beans were tender. Then I added browned ground chuck and sautéed onion, canned tomatoes and some tomato paste out of the tube. Chili powder and cumin. Also the remainder of the Cajun seasoning in a plastic bag that a neighbor gave me to try. I'm hoping the chili isn't too spicy for dh. I may need to cook some pasta! Chili spooned over pasta is very good. Popular in Cincinnati.

A side will be either tossed salad or coleslaw.

It feels like late fall or early winter here. Hasn't gotten out of the 60's all day. Real chili weather.

Our Thunder Bay friends prepared delicious meals for us, including breakfasts with fresh raspberries from their own bushes. The first night we had walleye filets, risotto with mushrooms, and steamed asparagus. The next night was fresh pasta and home-made red sauce, fresh green beans and tossed salad. Sunday I requested that we be allowed to take them out to dinner but, no, there was a chicken in the refrigerator. It was butterflied and cooked on the grill with fresh rosemary. There were tiny potatoes also cooked on the grill and a medley of veggies and another tossed salad. The chicken was wonderful. Crisp skin and juicy flesh with a lot of flavor.

Today I bought a chicken and hope to replicate theirs.

DH just tested the chili to determine if it's too spicy. It took several spoonfuls!

I love chili on spaghetti--they call it chili five ways at Steak and Shake.......

Moon, you are so blessed. Those two are adorable.

Lacey Good job on the Frozen Blanket, I thought amaranth was a grain is it a green? Or were you disguising another Kale recipe? HAHAH

Susan-hope your tummy is feeling better and that the condo is a match for all needs.

Dinner was a pimento cheese sandwich, BBQ chips and a peach.......We are under Tornado watch till 10pm tonight. If weather is respectable, I am trekking back to a farmer's market out in the county to get more tomatoes.

Moon, we have missed you during your long absence. The grandchildren are adorable. I'm sure they are a pleasure to you.

We were lazy this morning and stayed in bed, snug under the covers, until almost 8 am. Finally I got up and turned on the coffee pot and also turned on the furnace to take the chill out. Tomorrow the sun pops out and the weather gets more like August in MN.

Tomato envy as you gardeners talk about your abundance of tomatoes. They should finally be ripening here. I'll check out the farmers market on Saturday.

Dinner tonight may be leftover chili, which is very good. Last night we did eat it over some pasta and the side was salad with romaine and additions.

Carole, what a culinary blast you had with your Thunder Bay friends. So nice!

I've had that Cincinnati chili a few years ago made by a friend from there. Very tasty! I am getting nervous hearing about your morning chill. I suspect we will be experiencing that in NH in a few days. :(

We are heading there today with supplies beyond belief to cover food, birthday, and activity needs for the various members of the family. It looks like I am starting a pre- school with all the play items and books I am bringing to keep the kids entertained (especially if it rains as forecasted)....arts, crafts, and experiments central!! And yes, folks, quite a bit of late night swearing at the sewing machine table, but I am happy with the final product. Thanks!

Amaranth seems to be a green and a grain.....how is that? I have yet to have the grain. I think I'll introduce the leafy one to the doc vegans BEFORE DGF arrives with DS2 Friday. The food/diet issues in this crew will be interesting. I will just be trying to go with the variant culinary flow! :€

Last night we ate at Fleming's Steak House (take that, vegans!) in Boston before going to see Kinky Boots. I had a very disappointing petit filet with crabmeat and asparagus (billed as Oscar, but all on separate plates and no bernaise sauce). I did get some on request....but I found it really unappetizing to have every food item brought on a separate plate. Not my favorite form of presentation. I would imagine the Cali restaurants in this chain would need to change that, given the water shortage concerns.

Kinky Boots was well performed...and I learned that I need to try to score an aisle seat for long performances since I was really distracted by my sciatica pain after the first half hour, with no way to move my leg.

Susan, I hope your NH trip went well yesterday with your guest....am so disappointed that we weren't back at the lake yet to have you stop in. And yes, the Frozen characters are the current Disney icons for kids.

I'd better get to packing up the car. I can hear that DH has finished mowing the lawn.....

Carole - I LOVE lazy, especially when it's cooler. Are you staying up North longer this year since you don't have to pull the trailer back? Been thinking about your Mom. I know she misses you.

Lacey - I was disappointed on my last trip to Flemings also. Have fun w/the kiddos.

Susan - condo countdown. What did you decide?

Redhead - haha for the kale disguise comment. It would have to be disguised for me to eat it. I usually substitute spinach.

Yesterday we went to the Farmer's Exchange - big permanent structures across town where many trucks come w/produce and restaurants can buy bulk. I hadn't been in years & we just went to the market in the front. Prices were much higher than the grocery but quality wasn't much better. For example - corn on the cob was 3 for $1.25. At Krogers the wonderful Olathe corn is 8 for $2.00. I bought two huge tomatoes at $0.98/lb, but they will have to ripen on the cupboard. Hope the flavor is good, but not expecting much. Cauliflower had rust & mildew spots. Broccoli was limp & old. Watermelon was about the same price but WAY too huge for me to even split w/someone else.

More of my weird meals. Lunch was the last Hatch Chili scone (at least the last one I haven't already frozen) sliced & buttered & lightly toasted. The side dish was the last of some fresh strawberries I should have eaten yesterday. Water aerobics class tonight so I'll probably just have popcorn when i get home after 8pm & get the chlorine showered off. Maybe w/a canteloupe appetizer.

Minus, my mother seems to be doing well this summer. We have a phone conversation most days. She keeps me up to date on what is happening with my siblings.

Tonight's menu was somewhat odd but tasty. A very nice man who has been here at the resort a couple of weeks brought over a freshly cleaned Northern that he had filleted so that there wasn't a single bone. The seasonals here throw the Northerns back into the water because of all the bones but this man and his family like them a lot. The two fillets were quite large so I cut them crossways into strips and breaded them with a light breading that I brought from home and fried them very crisp in my new used iron skillet that I bought at a church garage sale in Thunder Bay. The fish was very good. No "fishiness" whatever. DH made his usual tartar sauce with mayo, dill relish, lemon juice and horseradish.

The side was a Near East brand box Tabboula Salad. I added diced tomatoes, diced cucumber, sliced Kalamata olives, feta cheese, lemon juice and olive oil to the basic bulgar mix.

Tomorrow we are driving to Fargo to meet up with Puffin, a bc.org friend on another thread, and her dh. It's supposed to be a nice day, sunny with highs in the mid 70's.

Lacey, I hope you enjoy the family get-together in NH.

DH returns to Florida tomorrow, so I will resume cooking shortly. Tonight I just had a salad of field greens, baby beets and feta. DD has been away for a few days, so I am just cooking for two - me and the dog! DD is doing a photo shoot for Columbia sportswear - for their site and for display in stores! We have a store about 45 mins away so I am looking forward to going in and seeing her larger than life fly-fishing photo!

Carole - I should be able to but I think it may take a bit before it appears in stores. She might get some proof sheets online, I will have to see. She was tarpon fishing yesterday, tomorrow she is wearing dresses for casual shots. She has done some other work for Berkeley rods/reels, Bote paddle boards, some odds and ends. She is very photogenic and she can fish and this has led to some fun and lucrativeopportunities.

Phew! Thank goodness we don't have that many days like this one.

The condo owner, advised by one of the dumbest realtors I have ever met, countered with the most absurd offer EVER. Get this. They want us to pay more to have an appraisal contingency. Seriously? A property that has never sold before and no appraisal? We did one round of counters and then we walked away. Amateur hour. Too bad. We liked the floor plan, but the finishes just didn't match the price point, and the listing agent was a complete dunce. A dunce who lied.

Today was Marie-Sophie's final day in Somerville. I made her a "special" final dinner... grilled chicken thighs and wings, steamed haricot verts, tons of garden tomatoes, and an American classic, macaroni and cheese with Cabots Seriously Sharp cheese, some romano and a dusting of parmesan cheese. For me, this was far too rich, but the kid wouldn't let me reduce the amount of cheese or milk fat. And then, I drove her to Logan for her flight home. I took her as far as security, and then had to leave her. She has promised to email when she is home near Versailles.

One less person to worry about, but we will miss her anyhow.

Susan, that sucks! Sadly, I keep hearing unpleasant buyer stories in this reign of sellers' terror market. Hard as it is, after getting that initial excitement about a place, sometimes walking away just makes the most sense. And of course you know that old platitude, "one door closes and another opens". But, of course, it would be nice not to have to continue the search. Best of luck....

And you describe perfectly the essence of your ambvalence about Marie-Sophie's departure...you loved having her, but you can really use some space in your life right now, with one less responsibility. Job well done! She was a lucky girl to be your guest. :)

We made it to NH in record slow time...local traffic not great at home, then on the major NH highway there was a sinkhole!!! Never heard of that in these here parts! So we had a lot of time in stopped traffic, then a sinkhole detour that was annoying but treated us to some very pretty scenery in Concord, NH.

As I searched the radio waves to figure out why we had the detour, I heard about a farmer's market in the town of Canterbury, from where a former SW intern of mine came. So I got off and was greated to more small NE town scenery and a cute Farmer's market where I purchased some local garlic, a zucchini salsa, and a vegan ice cream bar for DH. It looked wonderful and DH attested to its tastiness, but given my allergy to cashews, I won't be trying any vegan ice cream. :(

We decided to buy corn at the local farm stand here, but just missed it being opened, so got some other local variety that looks good, from the supermarket. There we also bought a pre-made, raw Mexican pizza which I cooked while unloading our zillion grocery bags from home. It was unspecial yet filled our tummies along with a salad I made with green and red leaf lettuces, etc.

DS1 and crew were also detoured and they got here (to the house they rented up the street), way after the kids' bedtimes. So they will come over for breakfast tomorrow...oatmeal loaded with dried fruit and nuts for doc vegans, whole grain blueberry pancakes for the kids, and a fruit cup I will make tonight. I will also try to get the corn chowder made tonight for tomorrow night's dinner here. We'll have grilled portobellas, cheeseless pesto white bean gemelli salad, and a big farmer's market salad with all of my weird, lovely greens and accompaniments.

Friday night DS1and DDIL will hopefully go out for dinner and we'll have the grands and DS2 and DGF here for dinner. Most likely chicken since that seems to be what DGF eats. At that point I will be wanting to keep it simple, which he and she will appreciate. ;)

Saturday we all go out for DH's birthday dinner, and I'm hoping that the restaurant can stand the liveliness of the grands. It could be a disaster, but hopefully not. I am not above sharing with the kids my words of wisdom about appropriate restaurant behavior, and hope they adhere to those! ;/

Meanwhile, can't wait to see the little buggers early in the AM. In the last photo I saw of DGD, she was kissing a worm. Oy! She will definitely get into the nature scene here! ;)

susan - I love Cabot's, haven't had it for a long time! Sorry about the condo. We are on the flip side of a condo deal - trying to sell one in the Palm Beach area in a country club as part of our friend's estate. We listed it a year ago and just had the first offer due to a saturated market and mandatory club membership. The offer was for 2/3 of the list price. The list price is the same as our friend paid several years ago, so all we were looking to do was break even and we will still have to pay the broker. The condo has no mortgage so we have time, so DH countered with a number halfway between list price and their offer. They bailed, but the agent contacted DH today to say they are reconsidering. I am hoping they will be sensible. Real estate can be frustrating, right? I hope the perfect thing comes along for you soon

Everyone must be recovering from midweek adventures.

Susan - I completely understand about your house guest. I love to go places but most of all I'm a homebody. I love being at home. I hope some of the "magic" feeling of her presence continues to linger with you minus the franticity if there is such a word of entertaining her. Wishing the broker had been better at his/her job since the place seemed to be what you wanted. We had a house near us just go up for sale for $50,000 over county appraisal. Same real estate agent that cold called here one day, I smartly kept her card. Looking for properties in this "hot market". Couple down the street selling maybe a bit overpriced but not by much. Certainly not "hot" for them. I think the guy is just testing the waters. He has spent countless hours landscaping on the lot.

Meatloaf turned out OK. Made carrots in apple cider reduction, jello salad, and a boxed dessert mix - peanut butter bars. I ended up sitting with the DH last night while his DW went to church choir practice. Easy, I watched TV. Looking for nursing home placement for him, not having much luck in the nearby area (Ft Worth too far).

Lacey - as usual you are a social whirlwind. I bow before your socialness as I did before Special's hostessing.

Last night DH made a salad, I had a PB&J sammie. Tonight I'm making a Campbell's oven meal with a chicken pot pie sauce. Been on the shelf for ages. Temp today is only 79, miraculous for August. Hope Minus is getting some benefit - rain I think for sure there. We got a surprise shower yesterday am and a dribble overnight.

Luv - thanks for the thoughts. Yes, it was only 79 today. Unfortunately my NW part of town got less than 2" of rain, but anything is better than nothing.

Dinner was a leftover simulation of Laurie's Chicken. Pork medallions, black beans, green chili salsa & cheese. Since everything was already cooked, I only had to warm it in the microwave. Quite good w/flour tortillas on the side.

The pork dish sounds good, Minus.

I put the new used grill to use as an outdoor oven yesterday afternoon. I butterflied a chicken and sprinkled it top and bottom with a lemon pepper seasoned salt. Positioned it on top of small potatoes, carrots, and onions in a foil pan. There is a temperature gauge on the lid of the grill and it indicated a high enough heat. The chicken skin browned nicely and the chicken was tasty but the veggies didn't get tender. Really odd. I microwaved the potatoes.

    Tonight's dinner will feature leftovers.

Today is overcast and the temp. has warmed up. We're supposed to get rain this afternoon.

I grill the meat, and then grill the vegetables while the meat is resting. As soon as I take the meat off the grill, I grill the vegies at as high a temperature a the grill will achieve.... It only takes a few minutes and both Sharon and DD love the slightly toasted taste.

Yesterday was "interesting". I worked from home, took mom to the memory - Alzheimer's disease study place, cooked dinner and then had to put it away uneaten because Sharon had to take her mom to urgent care.

The memory place noticed what I had been noticing...mom's memory and her physical capabilities have greatly declined since last year...sigh...

Yesterday's cooking was another cooking experiment in braising. A pot roast done in a glazed dutch oven in the oven . The liquid was balsamic vinegar and maple syrup in a 2 to 1 ratio (more vinegar than syrup), plus a sauteed onion, some garlic and a "giant heaping tablespoon of Dijon mustard.".

I didn't measure all that carefully, I just poured until the liquid was about 1/2 way up the side of the meat/onions, added the mustard and I put the covered dutch oven in the oven and let it "bake" at 250F degrees until the meat was "medium rare".

I even used the "was used to cook bacon and eggs, but didn't get cleaned" skillet to sear the meat and saute the onion, so it was a very minimal effort meal that turned out well..even when it was reheated...

Luv, and Susan.. I never seem to be at home and my time is scheduled to the fraction of a second..so being at home with no schedule is my perfect vacation...but.......more sigh..... :-)

Carole - your BBQ'd meal sounds great. Not sure why the vegies didn't get done. Maybe needed smaller pieces. Let them sit at room temp and maybe just nuke them a teeny bit b4.

Yesterday turned into an all day marathon in Ft Worth. 1.5 hours at eye doc for a 5 minute appt. I've been with him too long to switch. I know the problem in the office is him, his staff is great and unfortunately I really like him. I just know going in I have to wait. Had some shopping to do. Found a longish pair of denim shorts on sale. My denim capri pants have seen a lot of wear this summer. The shorts are at my knees so almost capri-ish. Had the burgers from the downtown burger joint - picked them up on the way home. Good burgers, fries & onion rings not outstanding. We turned down Mexican food out tonight - DH working today so I didn't really care that the meal ended up $20 prob. less than half of what we would have spent going out.

Minus - I never got to Central Market. I guess the Hatch chiles will have to do without me. Albertsons had some but produce lady said they were very hot. Hmmm- I'm not a hot person. I did bookmark some chile scone recipes. My still DH does not like scones. He will eat biscuits just fine. Maybe something savory with a soup/stew?

I still have to get my new glasses. I knew with an 11:30 appt at doc there was no way that was happening yest. If we get another cool spell I may just take off one day just to do that.

I made the Campbells Cooking Sauce Chicken Pot Pie. It was delicious. Tasted homemade. I will do it again. Probably for my church family meal in a week or 2. It had just the sauce. Added boneless breasts, frozen mixed vegies, some frozen chopped onions and fresh small cut potatoes. We are having the repeat tonight. Made some forgettable canned biscuits, again DH's choice. I could have made biscuit topping but he poo-poohed that idea.

Bedo - I was reading thru a newsletter I get and found this link. Thought you might like it. It's very subtle but the recipe links are at the end of each description. I cannot figure out if the last one with salmon is cooked. Never says. Might like it if it was cooked and then marinated. I really like the Honest Cooking site. I might have sent this b4 esp. since it's from spring. Apologies if I have.

Oh Eric was just posting this when I see your new post. Sounds like both you and Sharon have full plates. Your mom is still in her own home, yes? So sorry about the decline in her cognitive abilities. Hope Sharon's mom has nothing seriously wrong or worsening. Prayers from here.

Eric, my thoughts are with you and Sharon as you care for your mothers.

Maybe I should have added a small amount of liquid to the veggies. Instead I relied on the juice and fat from the chicken providing the liquid.

Hope Lacey is having a wonderful time with her family in NH.

Both moms live at home. Without help, my mom wouldn't be able to do this. The help is mostly provided by her neighbor--a home health nurse that really does live next door to my mom. The nurse is retired, except for this arrangement. It works very well.

In my heart, mom should still be "Superwoman", like she was when I was a small child.

My MIL is OK mentally, but her hips are really bothering her and it obviously hurts to even walk.

She got married the moment she turned 18--to get away from an abusive father. She lucked out an married a great man, but she never lived on her own and never had to do any "handy" things for herself...so Sharon and I do that kind of stuff for her.

It keeps the two of us hopping.
