Anyone have tumor marker tests after chemo?

I am 5 weeks PFT of T/C and doing OK. Still tired and have fatigue, but overall, common along. I was Stage 1 and was feeling pretty positive about moving on. I have expanders and hsve exchange surgery scheduled. Two weeks ago, my MO ordered tumor markers. One came back elevated - CEA was 6.7. So, now, she has me geating a brain scan, chest, abdominal, pelvis and bone scan. I read that tumor marker tests were not recommended for early stages. Now, I am freaking out!

Anyone else have tumor marker tests ordered? What happened next for you?

    mysunshine - yes, I have tumor markers regularly - every six months, both CA27/29 and CEA. Many oncs don't do them because they can be unreliable and influenced by a number of other factors, but the practice I go to does them even for early stages. You may want to ask your MO if there is willingness to wait a bit and retest, if you are comfortable with that. My tumor markers were normal - for a cancer patient - when chemo started, and three times high normal when chemo ended. My MO tested me at 3 week intervals after the last chemo and the numbers eventually returned to what they were. These tests can be skewed by inflammation which chemo can cause, so we did not scan right away.

    Thank you Special, I am freaking out. Should I ask that we do the scans later or just do them. She has them scheduled for next week! So, did you hsve to get all these Scans? She did the tumor markers prior to chemo and theybwere OK. Now, the CA 27/29 is fine, but the other went to 6.7. I was wondering if just coming off chemo could influence the results. Oh, boy, just when I was looking forward to a week with no doctor appointments, now I hsve all this to do and worry about. Did you ever have to drink the barium? How was that? I will probably throw up!

    mysunshine - I had a mammo/US/MRI prior to surgery, echocardiograms throughout chemo and Herceptin, a PET prior to chemo, one just after chemo, and another a year after, and periodic DEXA scans for bone density - that is it. I have never had a brain, bone, chest, abdominal, or pelvic scan, and I was Her2+ and node positive. I had a barium test years ago for reflux, as soon as they tilted the machine back it all came back up in my mouth because I had no GE juncture keeping my stomach closed - the test ended pretty quickly. I wonder why they can't just do a PET for you - that would cover chin to knees. Inflammation can skew the CEA number, as can liver distress, which you could definitely have post-chemo.

    Hmm, I had a pre-chemo tumor markers test. Same ones, CEA and CA27/29. I believe I'm to have that same test monthly, plus CBC tests weekly, throughout the chemo process. Interesting to hear that they can be affected by liver stress. Not sure how meaningful they are if that's the case, especially since chemo is an obvious liver stressor. But I guess it's better to know some numbers than not know anything?

    SpecialK, you sure are on a lot of threads, but I am happy to see you because you are so knowledgeable. I live in Bonita Springs, about 2 hours from you....sure would like to meet you one day! Anyway, my MO did the tumor markers and the CEA was 6.7 and the 27/29 was 30. I looked these up and it is do confusing. So, I did have the brain scan and bone scan today. The others are on hold pending insurance approval. This is freaking me out. I cannot eat and I am losing weight because of it. I do not want to lose any weight. I just asked you on another thread what can we eat that is OK. It seems there are so many conflicting studies and opinions about what to eat and what not to eat. My MO is really scaring me. I finished chemo on July 16. Is a PET scan as good as individual scans? I think you are my age. I just went on Medicare, but am keeping my school insurance too. (Just retired). This is costing me $900.00 a month, but am afraid that Medicare won't pay for tests. Oh, boy, I am a mess! Any help on any of this would be appreciated. What about make-up, lotions and hair products? Everything is scaring me

    mysunshine - yes, meeting in person would be fun! 30 on a CA 27/29 is a normal result for a cancer patient and I doubt is the driving factor behind the scans, so don't let that one worry you. The CEA is the one that seems high, but again, there may be reasons relating to recently finishing chemo. I imagine that your MO is doing these tests to rule out as much as to rule in, so try not to worry too much - I know it is easier said than done, but don't worry until you have something concrete to worry about. I turn 59 in a month or so, but don't have any experience other than to say that Medicare and a Medicare supplemental is usually sufficient to cover cancer related costs. I am not sure I would keep full-on insurance in addition to Medicare, but maybe address that once this round of tests is complete. It might be a good idea to put the word "Medicare" in the search box on the left side of the page and read about other BCO ladies who have Medicare and how they handle supplemental insurance and the need/costs for ongoing tests/treatment.

    On the subject of food to eat - I follow the Clean 15/Dirty Dozen, and I eat organic/grass fed/free range/wild caught protein sources. I follow the Virgin diet and avoid soy, dairy, sugar, corn, gluten, peanuts but I now do eat eggs. This eating plan is not for everyone but I found it best for me. It is not necessary to follow such a restrictive plan specifically for breast cancer, but I personally feel that avoiding dairy, soy and sugar is a good idea. Others say moderation in all things is key, but that didn't help me lose chemo and hormonal therapy weight, so this is my choice. I will say that I don't know how necessary it is to focus that much on trying to eliminate every potentially harmful food or cosmetic - the amount ingested or absorbed is pretty small. This is something that makes some people feel some measure of control over an uncontrollable situation, but don't let it stress you out. Just gradually find food and cosmetics that meet your needs, it is an ongoing process. I would consult the Skin Deep website for cosmetics and such that you are currently using and to find new cosmetics/lotions/shampoos if you feel like your favorites are not what you want to continue with. I am allergic to the lathering ingredient in many things so I use olive oil soap (Neolia), and olive oil shampoo and conditioner. I use Tarte, Josie Maran, Korres, and Boscia cosmetics and skin care.

    Thank you. Why don't you eat peanuts? What about other nuts. I thought they were good for you. So, Imguess no yogurt for you. So, what to eat for breakfast as there is sugar in so many foods. I cannot eat vegetables for breakfast! Yes, I am following the Clean 15/Dirty dozen rule. I also use Juice Beauty products after throwing out most of my other cosmetics. You are right about trying to have some control over a situation where we have little control.

    I do eat other nuts, but not peanuts because they are a food that commonly causes allergies - allergic reactions, or even sensitivity, can cause inflammation in the body. Inflammation, in turn, can exacerbate joint pain from hormonal therapy, and is also thought to be a precursor or complicating factor for heart disease and cancer. For breakfast I sometimes have eggs - usually scrambled with some sliced tomato or sometimes leftover steak and eggs, or with salsa and avocado, or gluten free steel cut oatmeal with fruit, or a smoothie made from frozen fruit, coconut or almond milk, and plant based protein powder - like Vega or Plantfusion.
