edited March 2018 in Radiation Therapy - Before, During, and After

All of my teeth were hurting so went to Dentist no cavities, no loose teeth, but total bone loss around teeth. Had to have them all pulled. Is this caused by radiation treatments or could it be metastases.

    Did the dentist say anything about your gums? Often gum issues is the culprit behind dental bone loss.

    Nana, I asked my Rads techs about this very thing, they told me the beam they focus on my chest has a very precise pattern, and it does not extend up to my head. This is why you do not have to wear any protection anywhere, the radiation stays in that pattern they tattooed on your chest with very little traveling. I hope my answer helps . Hang in there!

    I stumbled across this thread when looking for things on teeth, I know it’s old but...

    I went to the dentist April 2017 with no issues, the week before I started 20 rounds of rads, just been back to the dentist yesterday, and I need 9 fillings!

    The dentist said that radiotherapy can affect the gland that controls the moisture in the mouth, causing dry mouth, when you have dry mouth it encourages any plaque to grow, which could be why I’ve developed so many problems so quickly.

    This is just a watch out really, as I had no idea that my teeth could be affected.

    My dentist said the same and offered me a guard to wear at night to keep my mouth moist...
