Crazy scared!

This is my first post on this site, even though I have been reading postings for several years. I am 6 years out from my diagnosis of IDC. I recently had a bilateral MRI for ongoing surveillance. It showed a mass on the chest wall, including the pectoral muscle. The mass is one centimeter at its longest. One aspect which is difficult to grasp for me is that the mass is behind the right breast. My cancer was on my left breast. How could this be? What does this mean? The next step is an ultrasound. I am so scared and can't sleep.

Hi, welcome to Breastcancer.org! We are so glad that you decided to join us, although we're sorry for the worry that brings you here...

The waiting is one of the hardest parts, we all know, so while you wait for your ultrasound to be done and for other members answers here, you may want to learn more on Recurrent and Metastatic Breast Cancer at our main site (just click on the link).

Hope this helps a bit, let us know how it goes!

Dharmagirl ~ Just wanted to say, welcome, although I'm so sorry about the scare you're experiencing. To answer your question, a new bc in the opposite breast itself would be considered a contralateral bc or second bc, not a recurrence, per se. Mets, OTOH, can appear anywhere in the body, on either side from the original bc. You mentioned the chest wall and pectoral muscle, yet the "mass" is only 1 cm (less than half an inch), so I'm not absolutely clear if this is something within your breast tissue or behind it.

When is your u/s? Please let us know what you find out. I will be thinking about you and praying that whatever it is is totally B9. Hugs, Deanna
