well today I got my lumpectomy results. My invasive area has been successfully removed. No node involvement but the benign area from biopsy was seen to be dcis at op. They scanned while I was under and took more tissue the pathology has shown the dcis is everywhere on tissue samples but can't be seen on mammogram. Do now I have got away with chemo but need mastectomy. I don't feel to bad about it and shocked at my feelings but I feel I can now move on in life rather let chemo put a hold on everything. I'm scared of losing my boob but pictures I've seen look quite good. I need all my tissue gone to protect me from further invasive cancers

    hi Terri,

I was found to have extensive DCIS after my lumpectomy which they thought would be a small area. I'm meeting with my O team (MO and RO) today to see if I'm going to be recommended for a mx. I think I will be.

My mammogram that I had right before being diagnosed didn't show anything except the original left-side mass, which was near the surface of my left breast. I then had an MRI, though, that showed both the right-side mass (1 cm deep) and many "areas of concern" in both breasts. All of my doctors (a tumor board with an MO, RO, and radiologist, along with another MO at a different center, and two additional radiologists at different centers) told me I should have a bilateral mastectomy. I did, and my left side had additional DCIS and ADH and the right side tumor turned out to be multifocal with extensive LCIS throughout the breast. I had extremely dense breasts and the mammogram wasn't very useful. That seems to happen quite a bit.

thanks for replies I'm now thinking why havnt they offered me an mri because if they can't see this dcis until cutting out how do they know if its not in my other breast...doesn't seem to be normal practise in uk?
