Exercise and well being during chemo and radiation

Thanks, Katy! The thing about RT is that individual response is SO unpredictable, and that the reactions keep changing, day by day. (I know this happens w/chemo, too). I AM glad that my skin isn't fried, at least not yet. I was not expecting the swelling to be SO pronounced nor that the interior tissues would tighten and pull as much and as quickly as they did.
I learned today that the actual area affected by the boosts will be a much bigger diameter than I was envisioning but that the particles travel more slowly. We'll see what that translates into in terms of the effects...

Okay, I'm infusing dried calendula blossoms into boiling water as I write. My goal is a skin wash/compress that's not oil-based. I already have calendula oil, Miaderm with calendula, and two calendula moisturizers, plus a homemade calendula moisturizer a former student just sent me.
Tip: If you order Frontier dried calendula flowers on Amazon, you get a truly huge bag.

This thread is SO motivating. Went out for an hour and 10 minutes. 90 degrees here and very humid, so after 20 minutes I ducked into the air-conditioned library for 20 minutes, then walked for another half hour. It wasn't the most energetic session, but I kept one foot in front of the other and felt much happier than yesterday for having done so. I have to keep reminding myself that the days when I get all three treatments are the hardest to jump start myself afterwards; it's like going back to square one every three weeks.
I also walked right past the ice cream stand, but if I HAD stopped, the blood orange creamsicle would have been my choice. 'Nother time.
Good job all who got out and about!
-
24.8 miles, 1575 feet of climbing on my road bike. Hot as hell, I would eat that blood orange creamsicle right now!
-
Italychick, I almost posted a picture of the ice cream board's choices....
-
now that would truly be torture. I would have to go find the ice cream truck!
-
Well, nothing today, unless you count driving 6 hrs in a black truck with no AC as excefcise. Hiked 6 miles yesterday in Grand Teton showing my friends around. Then went swimming in the lake, and had about a tablespoon of beer from the Snake River Brewery. Proved that the legend that after chemo you can never get drunk is a lie. It is soooooo smokey up here! Heard Cali and Oregon went supernova in the last few days. It's making me crazy to not be out on the line! Hope everyone is being safe! New excercise goal, and I need you guys to hold me accountable- take the wildland firefighting pack test and pass in one month. It's 3 miles with a 45 lb pack in under 45 minutes. Next year- goal is to run from Driggs Idaho to Jackson Hole over the Tetons. Immediate goal- catch up on sleep 😊
-
I didn't have quite the will power as you rainnnyc. After yesterday's exercise I bought ice cream.
4 miles of walking this morning. None tonight. Too pooped.
-
Thanks for the Emu and related tips, Hopeful. Very helpful and I am going to try it!
I love orange creamsicles. Doubt if I could pass one up..
Octo.

I might have had less willpower on the ice cream front if I weren't still feeling the effects of chemo from Friday as well as the heat. I asked my stomach what it wanted to do, and it told me, erm, "not today."
So....
-
Thankful the weather is cooling down this week. 2.8 mi total of walking today, half this morning and half in the evening.

another light day today. Feeling weak and listening to my body . Not sleeping well since I started Tamox, could also be move excitement. But I did get out.
3000 steps
1 mile
28 min active

Massive goals, Littleblue. I've been thinking about you and your guy--my wife and I went to Bend but left the back porch unlocked and told housesitters to free the kitties if there were a local fire. Set an alert on Weather Underground for fire warnings in our zip code. Fortunately, the only fire in our district was small and easily managed.
8/3:
- .5 hr T (2.5 MPH avg) + stretches
- (radiation #17)
- 1.55 miles rowing
- 1.25 miles in steps
- .5 hr T (2.5 MPH avg) + stretches
- .5 hr T (2.5 MPH avg) + stretches

Rainnyc - Glad to know you're listening to your body. congrats on getting your walk in despite chemo, heat and humidity.
LBF. - Wow. That is an amazing goal. I'm in awe.
Octo, I hope it all works out for you.
I finished my course of 28 whole breast and nodal radiation treatments today!! I get a day off tomorrow then start the boosts. The end is almost in sight.
45 minute on the bike with intervals today
11,500 steps
Followed by a major sugar binge, which is always a sign that SOMETHING is wrong.. Oh well, tomorrow is another day, hopefully without a sugar jones.
-
Congrats on finishing your rads, Hopeful!
-
Congratulations on finishing the main course of radiation!
-
yes, Hopeful, congrats on this milestone. Just your boosts left! Yay!

Oh, hi! I'm finally starting to exercise again. Took a 6 mile walk on Sunday. Cleaned my entire house yesterday - which I'm counting (it was a mess) and heading to the gym today.
Those of you using fitbits can you give me a few pros & cons? I use my iPhone as a pedometer when walking but don't keep track of anything aside from that.
You guys have been logging lots of miles!! So exciting.
-
My wife is using her Fitbit Zip (the really basic, least expensive one) to track steps, which is what motivates her. She's keeping it on while treadmilling because her total distance covered is what she cares about. She's also using the food tracking function.
I'm using mine as a pedometer and removing it while engaged in other forms of exercise. I'm more interested in duration and intensity, and some of my exercise (like rowing machine) doesn't translate well. I also tend not to count my steps and historically have considered walking around at work etc. as a sort of "bonus" activity. I'm counting those steps now, however, to give my RO an accurate picture of my activity vs. creeping radiation weight gain.
Despite no longer having a bra to clip it to, I will say that it's a convenient design and I like that it sends results to my phone app.
-
Thanks, all! I'm enjoying my break from RT today before heading not the home stretch (the final fifth) tomorrow.
Susan, I'm gaining weight, too, and it's not all been due to yesterday's sugar binge. I've begun to wonder if the copious amounts of water I'm so careful to consume are part of it. My treated breast is now substantially larger than the right breast due to swelling.
I wonder if your radiated tissues are holding on to more H2O than is apparent?
It's definitely disconcerting and unwelcome, whatever the cause. -
3 mile walk this morning before work. Will try to do a couple more miles tonight.
-
Bought a Nutri Bullet yesterday, made my first smoothie this morning.Turned out pretty good! And it's super easy to use, which is a bonus. I have a goal of losing 10 pounds by my birthday (August 27). I don't know if that's too high a goal, so I'll be happy with 5-7 pounds. Who knows if that's achievable while still undergoing radiation. I'm trying to improve, especially now that my cholesterol is high. Hopefully this helps.

Eileen, here's my report having had the fit bit (flex model bracelet) for a week now.
I like that it automatically syncs to my tablet
I use the app for recording my food and it has an extensive calorie lookup feature with lots of foods I including brands and restaurant menu items.
I think the steps feature is a little off since I can watch it recording "steps" while im sitting on the sofa looking at the app on my tablet!
Im tracking my sleep with the fitbit, but not sure what benefit there is to that really.
I use it to record my mileage on my walks. I previously used Map my Walk on my phone. I liked that app because it would periodically announce my distance ( which was a motivator) and I could look at specific routes and note the distance so that if I didn't want to run the app I could take a previous route and know already how far that would be.
In summary, im glad I got the fitbit for the 24/7 activity tracking and the food recording, but I still prefer the phone app for my walks although im starting to just use the fit bit more because it's already on and it's easy.
Today my fit bit sent me an email saying I walked over 19 miles last week. That made me feel good!
Another bonus is you only need to charge the thing for about 2 hours once a week.

wpmoon - Enjoy your smoothies. I found that once I got into the routine of doing them it was pretty fast and easy. The hardest part was keeping all my favorite basics in the house. For example, I've just realized I forgot to buy spinach
-
I think the key is learning how to freeze stuff. I tried to make green smoothies but so much was wasted.
-
90+ degrees outside today and seriously humid. Walked about a mile and called it quits. Bleh!
Hopeful, terrific news about finishing radiation!
-
Hopeful - I forgot to buy kale, but I just made the smoothie without any greens. I used apple, strawberries, a handful of frozen blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries, half a banana, glutamine, chia seeds, and water. It was pretty good! And my favorite thing about the nutria bullet is that it's personal size, so there was no waste. I drank it all! I did just come back from trader joe's - bought kale and cranberry juice to throw in there for tomorrow.
Walked 4.3 miles around the lake today. Hip hurts, and I'm tired as hell, but I'm motivated! Gonna take a cat nap with my cat, and see if I'll be up for yoga tonight.
-
We use a Magic Bullet blender for morning smoothies--kale, half a banana, frozen fruit, yogurt or kefir, rice protein powder in mine.
-
my exercise is hardly worth mentioning today. My legs just hurt so much! I think it's worse today because of the port removal stress. I am fantasizing about canceling. I won't. But I want to.
3/4 mile
25 minutes
Going in the wrong direction here.
-
Jackbirdie, mine was even less than yours...first day back at work post surgery and I had to come home at 2: too much pain in my SNB incision to work! So, I did walk from the parking lot to the office...sigh.
Tomorrow hopefully will be better!
