Artista928, I did the same thing before my surgery in early July!! It was so very helpful, I felt very prepared!! Only people that have been through it can tell you what to really expect!!
Prayers and good thoughts being sent to you for this Thursday!!

Good luck Artesia928 - Good luck with everything! You will do great! One thing someone gave me in a gift basket was short sleeve button down tops and pajamas. I didn't own any. They were very helpful since pulling things over your head is painful.
A nurse told me in the hospital that everyday I would feel a little bit better and she was right. The first couple days were rough but it gets better and before you know it, it's behind you.
-
Button tops and lanyards to hold up drains are a must. I can't wait to get these drains out. I'm one week post op and am anxious to lose these grenades. Anyone have info on typical number of days these are kept in? I'm at getting lower fluid levels daily but the swelling is still substantial.
-
I had my lumpectomy on July 6th. Will be starting radiation treatment in a few weeks.
-
LindyC, I got rid of 2 (one on each side) after 8 days and the other two 5 days after that. Those last two drains were really ready a couple of days before that but it was the weekend. So just less than 2 weeks I had them all out. Not only do they drive you crazy, I was petrified the whole time that I would accidentally "catch" them on something- even tho they were on a lanyard or in pockets- it was still unnerving!
As someone else said, things get better every day. Sending thoughts and prayers your way~

Welcome meezers3. How are you doing?
You should also look for the summer rads thread to join.
-
I only have one drain, I don't know how you ladies manage with multiple drains. I am terrified of catching it on something. I wasn't prepared for having one so all I have is a safety pin to attach it to my clothes. Thankfully it comes out tomorrow. How long do you use ice for swelling? I was feeling great and probably overdid it. Had to ice my left breast down yesterday. I am still swollen but not sore this morning.
-
welcome meezers3 and let us know how you are doing. There is lots of great support on this board.
Molly50, I hope the swelling goes away and yay on getting that drain removed!
I almost feel like myself today....just a little soreness.
Octo.
-
Good luck with the sx Arista and you will be in my thoughts!
-
Thank you loves. Didn't mean to hijack your thread. Best wishes and much love back at you 10 fold!
-
Molly 50, lucky you with one drain...Free123 Thanks, that's encouraging to hear. I have a fear that it'll be 3 weeks of this misery. I have 4 drains and buttoning tops up over them as well as worrying about pulling them out is a major concern. Curious about the swelling and if it will impact the removal. I basically have side boobs..lol..and the sensation that can only be described as waves constricting or tightening my chest has me wondering what is going on. Is this the tissue expander doing that too?

I'm back to work this Friday, August 7, which will be 4 weeks. I have a long drive, an hour or more each way. Can't take a train or bus. I do have a desk job with a comfortable chair, thank goodness. Anyone have any advice for returning to work? I'm going to wrap the seat belt in a soft thick baby blanket which seems to stay put better than a pillow, try to take it easy the first few days, and hopefully get up at least once an hour to move around.
I haven't reconstructed so I'm flat for now and have some new clothes to disguise it a little. I'm thin enough to get away with it I think. I used to wear a lot of knits. In 4 weeks I'll go shopping for breast forms. I really do love wearing turtlenecks in the winter, so some small forms might be necessary for those. I hope I can find forms and bras that are comfortable enough. But going without a bra this hot, humid summer has been great! I will likely do it again next summer!
I'm still feeling sore as things continue to heal and I'm now doing the post operative exercises. The most difficult one for me is (while lying flat) putting my hands behind my head and bringing my elbows back to touch the floor or mattress. It's still very tight across my right pectoral. Left side is so much better than right! Funny how things heal unevenly. It's still early though and I'm going to keep up the stretching.
Gentle hugs to everyone, especially the ladies who are just recovering from last week. It does get better. And for those with drains in, I hope your recovery moves along and the drains can come out as SOON as possible!
-
I am 2 weeks post surgery and still have my drain but hopefully will come out tomorrow. Its painful when I accidentally tug on it. I got one of those pockets that tape on to your clothes but the safety pin works just as well. If I had multiple drains I would probable get one of those things that go around your waist so you don't have to pin & unpin everytime you change. I did wake up with a bra after surgery and keep that on all the time. It keeps things compressed and is more comfortable for me. It is a bra called Carefix and is very comfortable. I ordered another one through Amazon. I have to wash it every other day along with my favorite pjs. It has been warm here and we don't have ac so I have a light button down, loose, pj/shorts I got from TJMaxx.
I do feel a tightness in my chest from the te but the bra helps. The te is just uncomfortable.
I am in awe of you ladies getting back to your normal routine - running 8 miles! I'm still working on getting around the block. Each day does get better. -
LindyC. . .my PS wanted total daily drain output at 10 ml per drain or less. I started using evernote to track everything and when the stitches pulled loose on one drain on day 9 she had me come in. She took out all 4 because I was down to only 36 ml total on day 8. It varies for each patient. Keeping fingers crossed that you get them out soon.
Button up shirts and Jammie were a must. Easier to find in winter though. I was really ticked that I could not find button up short jammies/tank tops that I liked for summer. Even searched Amazon. I had to wear a man's shirt to hospital to wear home after surgery.
I think I'll design some button up tanks and start selling on line. I just wore my surgical bra around the house for the first week and I have a loose summer sweater on today for my postop. Hopefully by two more weeks when I go back to work, I'll be comfortable in my loose shirts. Since BMx, I cannot stand tight clothes or anything around my neck like a turtleneck.
Mavski, if you are getting around the block at two weeks you are doing great.
Jkbraca. . .best wishes going back to work. I was out 6 weeks for BMx with TEs and was exhausted the first week. Move around a lot and don't lift anything. Even after 8 months before EX, I still had lifting restrictions. I am allowed to start back with 2 lb weights at 6 weeks post EX. I hope to be on a slow treadmill by this weekend at least.

jbraca I agree- going to be tough for awhile back at work. Just that long of a drive one way is going to be very tiring. Any way you can do half days for awhile? I found I needed that for 2 weeks after going back (35 minute drive, desk sitting but reaching a lot)...
after 4 weeks Id be very surprised if anyone could touch their elbows back all the way to floor. Dont think Id even be trying that much so soon.
-
Jkbraca2,
Went back to work today. Made it through but my drive is only 20 minutes or so. Your drive is so long! My surgery wasn't nearly as involved as yours but for that reason I would consider working only part of the day if that's an option. -
Got my path! No surprises.... Clear margins, clear lymph nodes, no LVI...ordering oncotype DX to be safe. So time to wait again.
-
Jbraca2. . .I would also recommend part time particularly if it cuts your drive time due to less traffic. We have an express bus, or I would have been out much longer. Also have you asked about PT? Even before EX, I could not get my elbows behind my head flat on the floor. I started doing sit ups using only my stomach muscles and holding my arms straight out. Hard to do but strengthened my abs more.

how do you all stand to wear a bra? Even a lightweight one hurts me where my axillary nodes were removed.
-
Had follow-up with BS tonight. Everything healing beautifully and he's really happy with results, as am I. Getting port installed on 8/19 and then should be starting chemo around 8/24. Progress is progessing, slowly, but surely. The only thing that's really bothering me now is that I can't shave my left underarm because the tissue collapsed after the lymph nodes were removed. Yech!

Hi ladies
I had 3 drains when I left the hospital. One came out 4 days aafter surgery, the second was two weeks, and the third was 4 weeks. I couldn't wait for it to come out. You ladies are doing amazing!!!!!
-
Thanks, I still have some pain from a seroma. I overdid it a bit today and have been sore all day. I will check out the summer rads thread. I go for my mapping in the simulator next Tuesday.
-
I was given a post op bra that has velcro loop that I safety pin my drain too. My drains had clips with velcro but the velcro scratched me. My orders we're that I could have drains out when I had 30 ml or less for one drain for 2 days straight. If I had two that qualified on the same side only one could come out first. They said the other one would pick up fluid.
I out of town for surgery and fly home in a couple days. My drain is almost ready to come out but not before I leave. I don't look forward to flying with it and my 21 month old. My doctor wants to do my first fill before I leave to make sure all is ok. They said they wouldn't pull the drain and do the fill on the same day.
For those who have gotten fills already. How long does the ache stick around for?
-
Hi Bunnyb,
Thank you for your message and kind thoughts. I have not been on board for awhile, have been having some really hard days. I hope you are feeling good and was happy to hear you are healing nicely.
My drains are out, I would not say I am having severe pain, but do have discomfort most of the time. I meet with radiation oncologist on 8/14 to schedule the start of radiation treatment. My onco score was 11, so I will not need chemo.
I wanted to mention that my sister in law had BC 15 years ago. She had 2cm tumor Stage 2, was treated at MD Anderson in Houston. She had chemo first with no bad side effects, radiation after surgery with no bad side effects, then tamoxifen for 5 years again, with no bad side effects.
So lets hope we experience the same. Send good thoughts to you.

Molly . . .I wore my surgical bra for the first few weeks after BMx and am back in it after EX. I can pull it donw lower so it doesn't bother the SNB site.Genie Bras are a great option once you can get a bra pulled up or over your head. They were recommended to me. Also the Bally single strap sports bras are great because you can pull both the genie and the bally away from the node site. Sadly, mine still bothers me sometimes. I think maybe it's the scar tissue.
Bunny. . .sounds like you are doing better. Yeah. I still have to very carefully shave so maybe when you're more healed and the skin tightens. Sorry and yes it is yuck. Hugs

Thank you, Scottie. I will try to pull it down now that my drain is out. I am going to join the August surgery group because I just found out that I have to go back in for a mastectomy on the 25th. I see the PS this afternoon. Moving quickly!
-
hello ladies, I had my BMX, SNB and expanders put in last Friday. Surgery went well and the initial pathology showed no cancer in the lymph nodes! I stayed two nights in the hospital and had a great day nurse. My night nurse was terrible though. I know not to put up with waiting forty minutes for pain meds when I have reconstruction!
I have four drains, two of which have had low output since Sunday. I didn't have any instructions from PS on drains. I have an appointment next Monday but might call tomorrow about having them removed sooner.
So is the terrible tightness I feel in my chest due to the TE? AM I going to have this for every fill too???? Yikes if so!
Jena
-
by the way- I got a mastectomy camisole that was covered by insurance. I highly recommend one! I have been wearing it as my top and it has pockets for my drains.
-
jlstacey. . .congrats on the path report and I commiserate with you on the night nurse. I waited an hour each time ( must have had the worst night nurse on the planet ). One of the hospital admits came up the next morning and asked why mm y night was so bad, I gave him an earful. Also had my exchange at a different hospital. The TEs do cause major tightness. It may depend on how tight your pecks are to begin with. I was told mine were really tight. There is good TE board where you can get info on fills. The motto is slow and go. Many feel relief after a few fills.

Had my post-op appointment today and my drain has to stay in. She wants it down to below 20cc a day. I have my first fill Thursday. I decided to give the go ahead on the oncotype even though the MO said I should only do so if I'm totally sure I won't want chemo if it comes back low. I also switched MO's. She's probably a fine physician, but I found myself angry over the emphasis on insurance, and I already had a different MO from my 2013 colon cancer, and he is now part of this group. So, I made an appointment with him.
My ex- husband is an MD and he had a bit of good reasoning on why it's important to have the oncotype even if you decide you want chemo if it's low. I have terrible problems with nausea. If I should get halfway through chemo and find the side effects are too extreme for any reason, knowing my oncotype was low would make the decision to stop easier. Conversely, if I'm sick as hell but my onco is high, I'll do whatever it takes to get through it.
