Hi everyone, my name is Sherrie and I was diagnosed with breast cancer this week. I am a 44 year old mother of 3 and have been married to my high school sweetheart for 23 years. Still in a fog and hoping for answers with the next week from the doctors on what the plan is.

Got the results this Monday, July 27, from radiologist that my biopsy was positive for cancer. Here is my timeline:

May 21 - Annual appt with gyno, orders given for mammo

July 1 - Mammo appt, in morning I know I know but wait for more info

July 1 - Call from gyno in afternoon that left breast has a distortion and they want a re-mammo and ultra sound done

July 10 - Second mammo and ultra sound of left breast

July 24 - Biopsy of left breast

July 27 - Biopsy results recorded as positive for cancer in left breast with non-palpable area of approximately 8mm and was told that it was low to moderate grade so far

Now, the time between my orders and my actual mammo exam were due to my busy life and just plain procrastination. My oldest child, and only daughter, turned 18 on May 13, my youngest was leaving a Catholic school that we had been at for 11 years and as a big volunteer for this school during all these years it was a big deal to be involved, then my 18 year old graduated and we went on her senior trip of a big road trip from S. Texas up through Colorado and the Rockies.

Right now my procrastination is in the back of my mind as being what allowed this "distortion" to be seen on the initial mammogram considering the size.

Now we are waiting to hear from the surgeon's office for the initial appointment and to set a plan of action and get going. We are a soccer family and very active so this is a hitch in our lives to say the least. Our youngest starts school on Aug 10, our middle child starts school on Aug 27, our oldest leaves for college on Aug 22 (she's only 45 minutes away though) and I am working on my BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) and my semester also starts back on Aug 27. I have been in touch with my instructors and made them aware of my situation with plans to continue on with a few modifications made to allow for my appts and any treatments.

My current thought process is to have a bx mastectomy with no reconstruction although my husband thinks I would be happier with reconstruction done. This will depend on whether they can do it along with mastectomy or not. If I have to return for another surgery then I will not do it.

Positive thoughts and the power of prayer are what carries us right now.

Sherrie

Hi Sherrie. Welcome to the club no one wants to be a part of. However, you will find great support on these boards. I found the thread of women who had surgery the same month and that group of women carried each other through. Also there is a thread to help prepare you for surgery I found helpful. I personally had bilateral mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. The type of surgery you choose is a very personal choice. Not everyone can tolerate the loss of both breasts well. For some of us, it was not as big of a deal. I had lumpectomies initially at the pressure of the surgery center but was confident I wanted bilateral mastectomy from the start. (Everyone has individual sets of circumstances.) But....that is not a guarantee you won't have a recurrence. There is no point beating yourself up for the procrastination. Thank God it is not a high grade. It's a vast world here and feels like it takes over your life, but you will get through it. Hang in there

    Hi Sherrie:

Sorry about your recent diagnosis. You mentioned you and your husband's current thoughts about mastectomy with or without reconstruction. Although I decided not to reconstruct after bilateral mastectomy (for bilateral disease), I did consult with a plastic surgeon in the interest of making an informed decision. You can find out what types of surgery you are a candidate for, and then focus on what those procedures entail, the added time in surgery required, the likely aesthetic results, the types of complications and their frequency, and the likelihood of subsequent procedures with each (e.g., revisions, replacement of implants). It is my understanding that even with a direct to implant (single step) procedure without expanders, there is a real rate of subsequent procedures (revisions, removal, replacement), including procedures requiring general anesthesia, a point you can confirm with the surgeon.

If you decide to consult with a plastic surgeon, I encourage you to take your husband with you. Meanwhile, you and your husband may be interested in reviewing the information at the breastfree.org site created by member Erica (aka Barbara), one of the best sources of information about mastectomy without reconstruction:

    http://breastfree.org

There you will find information about why other chose not to reconstruct, personal stories and photos (see menu at right), plus useful information about surgery, various types of prosthesis (forms), as well as going without prosthesis ("going flat").

Hopefully as you learn more, you will be able to come to an informed decision about what is best for you.

Hi again. Sorry it has taken me so long to get back on here, just been taking it easy. Had a BMX on Aug 13 with no reconstruction and very happy with my choice. Things are well, I have moved to posting on the August 2015 board.
