double mastectomy and insurance

Hi all,

My mom has stage 2b in one breast, with affected lymph nodes and cancer cells also found outside the lymph nodes. She was scheduled to start chemotherapy before surgery next week, but now she's wondering:

A) if she were to get a double mastectomy would that would prevent the need for the pre-surgery chemo and radiation and,

B) would her insurance be likely to cover such a thing?

Sorry I'm really new to all this and she and I both are confused and don't know where to turn for advice. I'd call her doctors and insurance company myself but she's stubbornly refusing to let me participate in her care to that extent (it's not "real" to her yet, which is why she's so against starting chemo and asked me to research this basically blindly).

Thank you in advance. :)

Hi Hopeful_Daughter, I am sorry your mom has to go through this. I think the first question should be asked to her doctors. Based on the limited information you provided, I would say she might need chemo no matter what kind of surgery she has because the lymh nodes are affected. Same is probably true for radiation.

With regards to insurance coverage for double mastectomy, I think it might depend on your state laws, her insurance coverage and her medical history. I would recommend discussing this with the hospital.
