Mom just diagnosed

edited July 2015 in ILC (Invasive Lobular Carcinoma)

Her core biopsy diagnosis read infiltrating lobular carcinoma, pleomorphic and signet ring cell type.She is have the lump and lymph nodes removed next weds. Is that when it will be graded and staged. The doctor feels its stage 1, I dont understand how when she only had the core biopsy done with know other tests.

    Raycat, where are you and is the hospital a cancer hospital? Is the surgeon a general surgeon or a breast surgeon? With lobular cancer, I really think some further testing should be done before surgery. Either an MRI with contrast or a CT with contrast.

    Also, if he feels it is stage 1, why is removing lymph nodeS (i.e. more than one)? What they did for me was to inject a dye into the breast (and they did this AFTER I was put under anesthesia, request this) that shows the surgeon the geography of the lymph nodes. Then they remove the first lymph node in the chain and test it right there in the OR. IF it has cancer, they then remove more lymph nodes, what is called axillary clearance. However, if the node is clean, they do not remove any further nodes.

    She is not able to get a MRI because she has clips in her head, he did say he will be injecting the dye for the lymph nodes also. He is a breast surgeon but reading all the comments about ILC it seems to be alot worse than what he is saying. My mom wants him to remove the lump and nodes if any find out the results and move on from there. If more surgery or treatment is need she will go the MSKCC in new york.
