DCIS Diagnosis
in March of 2015 I was diagnosed with DCIS during my annual mammogram screening. After a biopsy, my DCIS was labelled a grade 3 with Comedo Necrosis. It was also Estrogen and a progesterone negative. I am 62 years old and in overall good health. (My 72 year old sister was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer in 1994. She also had calcifications but her doc watched them for 4 years before taking action. Her cancer was estrogen and progesterone positive. 4 years later her cancer came back stage 4 mestaticized. The mistake my sister made was to not have chemo when it was in her lymph nodes in 1994). My doc had me do a MRI and numerous diagnostic mammograms. The decision was made to have a Lumpectomy with 6 weeks of radiation. On 4-3 -15 I had 3 wires placed to outline the margins and a sentinel lymph node biopsy done. My doc removed 3.2cm of tissue. Pathology showed lymph nodes were clear and all but 1 margin was clear. The doc found a new calcification outside the original medial margin. She told me that if she had gone further she didn't know if she would have found more. Given how sick my sister was, I insisted the doc go back in and check. She said she was 99.9% sure she had removed all the cancer. I insisted so after making me wait 2 months, I had my 2nd lumpectomy on 6-11. Pathology indicated a .65 cm focus of DCIS close to the medial margin. This time I opted for a Mastectomy. On 7-14, Pathology showed .2mm of DCIS. I share this with you to remind us that docs are human and to trust your intuition. I wanted a mastectomy from the very beginning but I let other people talk me out of it. After battling Cancer for 21 years, my sister passed away while I was in surgery on 7-14-2015.

Thank you Byrnes32 for the reminder.
I am very sorry you lost your sister.
I agree with you to trust your intuition!
I did with my dx, but there are many times in my life I wish I hadn't listen to other people.
I pray health and recovery for you!
Gentle Hugs
Robin

thank you for your kind words. I see you are from CT. I grew up in Waterford and moved to CA at 32. I hope you love living there as much as I did
