Should I have double mastectomy?

Hi everyone,

My name is dez, I was diagnosed with stage 2a TNBC last December 2014.

Had lumpectomy, just done with 8 cycles of chemo and going to see my oncology next week.

He said I don't have to have a mastectomy and now I am confused.

Anyone ever in my position?

Thanks

    hello,

It sounds like you already made that decision and moved ahead with a lumpectomy instead of a mastectomy, then followed up with chemo. This seems like a rational way to go for treatment for the small amount we can see on your dx.

Is there some other new complication that's not in your note?Do you have a positive genetic test for BRCA1 or 2?

Unless there has been some new factor discovered since the lumpectomy (such as a genetic component), there would be no reason to get a mastectomy at this point; the lumpectomy removed the cancer in your breast (follow-up radiation zaps possible remaining cells), you did chemo to kill any cancer cells which may have escaped into your blood stream. A mastectomy would serve no purpose.

Hello ladies, thank you for your reply.

I live in Indonesia and gene testing isn't available yet here. I have a very strong history of BC in my family, Mom, Auntie, Cousin had BC. I don't know if I am a BRACA 1 carier but I might be.

I am just done with my chemo and haven't met my oncology yet, so basically I don't know about the results of my chemo yet.

I did lumpectomy because at that time I thought it was only a breast infection, so we knew it was a TNBC only after the pathology result came out.

I am really scared of it coming back. Chemo sucks :-(
