I'm busy catching up here. I've been having to catch up at work and haven't been reading here as much as I'd like.

I do know that my boss *IS REALLY REALLY* peeved at me being gone for 5 weeks--3 on vacation and 2 military leave. I was all caught up ahead of time for the vacation but the 2 extra weeks put me behind. He said I shouldn't be doing outside employment if it hinders my ability to get my job done. He hasn't read up on the military leave laws, so I just smiled.

Dinner tonight is probably going to be an old standard...I'm just not sure which old standard yet. :-)

Ah, yeah. Eric. Maybe hand him your commander's card to call if he has questions and keep smiling? I don't know much about the military so I'm guessing it would be your commander.

    I made this for dinner

    http://www.foodandwine.com/slideshows/healthy-fish/

and gave half to my dear landlords. My cabin is attached by a hallway to their 1700s house. We say we are the oldest commune in RI

I'm also making refrigerator green beans

And then cucumber, red onion, watermelon and mint salad for the community garden pot luck tomorrow. .

    Cooking up a storm.

Bedo - wow, you're on a roll. The Monkfish recipe sounded good. And what are refrigerator beans? Yum to the watermelon salad. How's the DD new bride doing?

Eric - Thanks for giving of your time. I agree, just keep smiling or give him a phone number to call if he keeps on being pissy.

Lacey - if I'd seen your NY Times egg recipes 5 minutes sooner, dinner would have been different. Rao's marinara was simmering w/mushrooms & poached chicken already done. I put the pasta on to boil & came to check this thread really quickly. I never thought of eggs in marinara. I guess I could have thrown out the pasta, but I have just enough Rao's to try the eggs later this week. Several others look good too.

Doing an all-American dinner tonight.... but to make it, I had to grind some beef since the freezer was bare, make the hamburger buns since the freezer was bare. So obviously, burgers, our first corn of the season, a tomato-feta salad and a vinegar based cole slaw. Poor girl has seen almost NOTHING of Boston. I feel badly, but this project is too important to screw up. Tomorrow, the kid is taking her to Water Country for a day of water, and it is going to be hot as blazes, so a good day to be somewhere with water.

I love eggs poached in marinara. And if you haven't tried it, poached in a tomato salsa is fabulous as well. Serve with some beans and tortillas and you have a terrific meal.

    Huevos rancheros--yes please!

Leftover lasagna tonight. Spent the day making Lithuanian bacon buns and a peach rustic tart instead of the clafoutis. It started out with a recipe from the KAF weekly recipe newsletter. Was supposed to be a humble pie with an eggy pastry crust. Turns out it was the most horrible crust I've ever made -- very difficult to work with, terrible texture. I ended up trashing the thing and taking out a frozen pate brisee that I made a couple of days ago. I hate wasting perfectly good ingredients, but the replacement crust was a dream.

Tomorrow is my birthday. We're spending it going to the city to track down ingredients for Frogmore stew (low country boil) -- specifically fresh shrimp and some good smoked sausages. We may take in a movie and make a Costco run too.

Got 3 ripe tomatoes, a few small cucumbers, yellow squash and a purple pepper from the garden today. A good day!

Since it's well past midnight....HAPPY BIRTHDAY NANCE!! Sounds like you have a good plan for your day. Enjoy! I'm envying your beginning harvest....but then again she who doesn't plant can't expect to harvest! Oh well! Once I'm planted in one place For a while, I will check out the farmer's markets which is the next best thing to the fun of harvesting one's own crops.

We had a long ride home from the lake this afternoon, merging with the race enthusiasists for much of the way...only took an extra 45 minutes. I'm glad we left when we did since our lake area had some pretty bad storms tonight.

DH grilled our balsamic and basil marinated chicken and portabellas for dinner which we rounded out with a nice garden salad and some pretty good corn on the cob. Tomorrow will be a whatever is left in the fridge meal since we leave again Tuesday morning (maybe eggs in salsa!). Another laundry, organizing and packing day....before heading to the gym for stretching class. Taking the ferry Tuesday makes the packing that much more of a challenge for me. Would that I could be a one bag girl.....HAVE I MENTIONED THAT I AM THE WORLD'S WORST PACKER!! Yes, I know I have. ;/ So tomorrow's challenge.....

Susan, your guest will be happy to be sloshing around in "Water Country" with our steamy weather!

auntie - Happy Birthday!!! Enjoy your day!

Last night was a beef and broccoli stir fry over brown rice - I am headed for the grocery store today since I have Mother Hubbard syndrome - which currently applies to the freezer, the fridge and the cupboard! DD just left with her friend for a couple of days of vacay in Sanibel, so just DH and I, and the dog to feed. I sent them on their way after feeding them scrambled eggs and chicken maple sausage on English muffins with melted provolone.

OK - I just read the whole Mother Hubbard nursery rhyme, it is pretty weird.

    Happy birthday Nance---

Catching up since Friday. Remember the "beanie weenie" TV diner with the baked apples in the corner and petrified cornbread in the other????

Saw my MO on Friday for my check up. Said my blood work was perfect (no red indicators) in any of it this time. So we wait till this week to see if the cholesterol is ok. My guess is not, since I am craving SUGAR from every direction and have piled on 13 lbs in about 3 weeks. Even buying wine (looks like I want to sart my own cellar). He said that is the Arimidex........and I said am I gonna get FAT (ter) and he laughed and said that was up to me........

Been eating SAMS club Rotisserie chicken a lot since it's quick and I don't have to cook. Bob Evans mashed and a can of cranberry sauce......I"m good. However, they had these Nutella stuffed mini-beignets that are my new "WEAKNESS".... OMG, why did I even walk past the bakery----its not like it was to get to the HUMMUS or anything........

Nance: I bought a small lemon pudding cake in your honor. So I wouldn't be temped to eat the whole thing, I stopped at two different neighbors on the way home so half is already gone. I will sing to you quietly before I eat.

Lacey: good luck packing. It seems the older I get, the less I take.

Redhead - one of my emergency go-to lunches is still a small can of Beenie Weenies. I know, the sodium is 840, but sometimes it's a quick solution & a taste of my childhood. Dinner when I don't want to cook might be just a can of smoked oysters & some triscuits.

I got some fresh tortillas today so tonight will be leftovers - green chili stew, black beans & the last of the poached chicken breasts. Maybe I'll remember to put cheese on top.

Carole - how's the northland? Hope you're having a great time loafing on your new deck.

Awww Minus, that's sweet! Thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes. Some days, making it to 67 seems like quite an accomplishment lol!

Dinner plans have changed a little. Instead of fresh shrimp, I snagged some fresh cold water lobster tails. If I can't have the whole thing, at least I can have parts. I picked up some Costco giant frozen shrimp for the Frogmore stew tomorrow. The Kirkland shrimp are quite good for frozen shrimp and like you SK, I like to have them on hand. I will indulge in the lobster tails, a baked potato and a giant beautiful steamed artichoke tonight.

Lacey, you can't possibly be the worst packer because I am. I'm notorious amongst friends and family for being prepared for any contingency. Also for my heavy suitcase.

Thanks again for the birthday wishes. You folks are the best and I really appreciate your friendship.

auntie - your b-day dinner sounds heavenly - I am an artichoke lover, DD says it is her favorite food.

For the heavy packing peeps - I traveled very regularly to see my mom in California and finally came up with this plan to help me pack lighter. I take black, white and a bit of khaki, a mix of casual and dressier and things I can wear in lots of combinations - black shoes, flats and a heel, black purse or tote, then accessories with color like scarves, earrings, necklaces, belts. I can mix the basic color pieces and jazz them up with bright accessories.

Happy Birthday, Nance!!! Lobster sounds like a great celebratory dinner!

I couldn't be less interested in cooking. Yesterday dh and I did our longest biking trip so far (laughable distance for "real" bikers), 23 miles round trip. Then we hobbled a block in the village of Nevis to a bar and grill named Iron Horse. I downed an ice cold Coors light--not "real" beer, I realize. It was so delicious that I ordered another as my sandwich was served. A brisket reuben on marbled rye. It was outstanding. I complimented the owner afterwards and he divulged that they smoke their own brisket. A serendipitous choice. Dh had one of his favorite burgers, a patty melt, and it was good, too, according to him.

So that was lunch and dinner yesterday.

Today I was glued to the tv for hours watching the conclusion of the British Open golf in St. Andrews, Scotland. I had taken a hambone from the freezer and gotten out a pkg. of Camellia navy beans to cook for dinner tonight. DH took the bait and moved right into the kitchen and started chopping onions. He's always afraid I'll skimp on the onions in a pot of beans. Later I'll cook some brown rice. So dinner will be beans and rice and a salad.

Last night was teetotaler night so tonight we'll have a drink. It's cool enough that we'll probably have a rye old-fashioned. I'll be sure to toast Nance!

Special - that wouldn't work for me because clothes are the least of what I pack lol!

Carole - I don't know, 23 miles sounds like a lot to me. I hope you have padded bike shorts. Your sandwich sounds right up my alley. I've been picturing you and your DH sitting on your new deck enjoying your old fashioneds!

My sweet DH made my favorite cupcakes for my b-day, white cake with white buttercream (I know, how boring lol! But wedding cake is my absolute favorite cake) and got salted caramel gelato to go with it. What a guy.

auntie - what are you packing? Lol! I am guilty of over-packing cosmetics, lotion, hair tools, etc., and also snacks! It is a Girl Scout approach - I need to be ready for anything. I am working on paring that down, and have made progress by having an already packed makeup bag with small sizes of shampoo and that stuff. I am better on planes because I hate to check my bag so I can actually go for two weeks with a rolling carry on 22" suitcase and one that fits under my seat.

Special, that poem Old Mother Hubbard is hysterical, I just read it. Do you think that the author and Lewis Carroll were friends?

Tried to read everyone's posts, but went to a pot luck at the community garden tonight after work,, and then met the lady whose cat I've been watching for 2 weeks, and talked to neighbors, so time for bed if I'm to get up at 6:15 with any sense.

    Will catch up later.

Hope everyone has a wonderful sleep and dreams.

bedo - I'm not sure! Some of the verses in that nursery rhyme would be a bit scary for children, right? Plus it has some of those same off kilter visuals like Alice in Wonderland, so maybe!!! I need clarification on the cat you were watching - you had not met the owner? How does that work

Just looked up Mother Hubbard since I could only remember the first verse. Weird. Even more strange if you buy the theory that it refers to Cardinal Woolsey who wouldn't give Henry the 8th a divorce from Catherine of Aragon.

Carole - you should post a deck picture on this thread. We could imaging you having cocktails & appetizers on the deck, or grilling something delicious.

So I gave in to my packing pathology and pulled out a larger suitcase than I started with. Oy! At least it all fits. I have done the black, white, and khaki slacks system, but I am overloaded due to workout clothes, beach clothes and items, lots of shoe options for every event, weather changes options and all my self-care items. I have to say that my self-care needs and products have increased exponentially over the past three years, which I find really annoying....and cumbersome when packing!

Carole, I'd also like to see the finished deck with you two relaxing on it. A nice add on, I'm sure.

So Nance, did you say that DH MADE you cupcakes (and I love that variety too!)??? I am impressed! I had the idea somehow that he was not a cook/baker. How very nice!!

I took a little stroll down our new stone path next to the house today. Sometimes the simplest things make me happy. There is just something lovely about a path through ferns. Since our large kitchen window looks out on this area, we're now motivated to add some nicer birdbaths and maybe some garden sculptures. Meanwhile, there is so much more we need to attend to upgrading with this house, it is pretty funny that we decided to do a path. Here are some pix:

    imageimageimage

Tonight since we had no real dinner food in the house, I poached eggs in a tomato sauce spiced with chile. Served it over the orzo/veggie combo leftovers and it was really good and satisfying. We had a cuke salad on the side.

Off to get some shuteye so we can drive down to make the ferry in the AM.

Minus DD and new hubby are so in love it is amazing! :) Thanks for asking!

That's so funny about the Cardinal, so much history.

Special, my neighbor, who also has breast cancer and is in her 70's 80's? Went on a trip to Paris. I don't really know her that well, so I thought she was going to come back on the 17th, but she didn't so I met her in her living room last night, as I went in to feed Ollie, the ragdoll cat. Every night when I came in I sang to him "Rag doll, livin in the city, Rag doll, Momma's little cutie" so he would know it was me.

Here is my green bean refrigerator pickle recipe

I'm sorry, I am so tired I can't keep up. Don't remember who asked

    Happy Birthday Nance.

And that is a beautiful pathway Lacey

Time for bed 7:41 pm. Not sure why I'm so tired.

Our visit with my DF is mainly being focussed on the distress she is feeling about her very ill dog, who I suspect will be departing shortly. I think it would actually be easier for her if the thirteen year old sheltie died while we were here so DF wouldn't have to bear the pain by herself. This DF lost her husband suddenly a few years ago, their two cats after that, and this is the last being with whom she shares her home. So she is very stressed to say the least. She has a complicated life. And she LOVES TO COOK! So she was happy to enjoy that distraction last night. She made this delicious swordfish dish last night. I made a salad with the few ingredients on hand. I would love to have our car here so we could pick up food items and cleaning items to use.....oh well.

Today we may spend some time at the beach if DF's pooch is comfortable.....and have reservations at Chilmark Tavern for dinner.

Here is the recipe DF was so excited to make last night. It was superb!

    :image

I see on the news that we had a small earthquake last evening, felt mostly near our lake house area. Didn't feel a thing here....
