Possible recurrence 3 months after Lumpectomy/Radiation/Chemo

    I am asking a few questions on behalf of my mom who had a lumpectomy in November and chemo and radiation completed in early Spring. She had a mammogram three months post radiation. The mammogram showed calcification spots on it around the scar area. They are now requesting a needle biopsy be done next week. Could a recurrence occur this quickly after the lumpectomy and chemo/radiation? Has anyone experienced anything similar? Thank you so much for your time.

    LMedlin - I'm hesitant to post as I don't really have information that will be helpful. Ultimately, regardless of anything written here, the biopsy will provide the information you're anxious to receive. Everyone is different so please keep this in mind. In my case, I had several things turn up in the pathology report that were not known prior to my BMX. In other words, there was more going on in my breasts than whet was learned during my original biopsies. I did have benign calcifications and it was mentioned that they may have been from an old injury. I don't know if the surgery itself can cause them. Your mother is fortunate to have you on her side. Recurrence scares are frightening. Good luck.

    LMedlin, please try not to panic. I can't answer your question with certainty but I think a recurrence so soon would be unlikely after all the treatments designed to kill cancer cells.

    Doctors will err on the side of caution with someone who has already had cancer. Be consoled that at least your mom's situation is being fully investigated.

    Wishing you both well and thinking of you as you endure the wait for the biopsy and results.

    I had a biopsy 18 months after surgery when new calcifications were seen on my mammogram. It turned out to be fat necrosis from surgery and radiation. Apparently it is pretty common. I pray your mom's biopsy turns out benign.
