Mastectomy and Stage IV IBC

Greetings Ladies, I have questions about surgery with Stage IV IBC. I was diagnosed in April with IBC with mets to liver and spine. I started treatment with chemo - weekly Taxol as well as Herceptin and Perjeta every 3rd week. After 12 weeks, my scans show no signs of cancer anywhere in my body (yay!) so Oncologist referred me to surgeon for consult. Surgeon confused me a bit by saying that it is non-standard to do mastectomy with stage 4 and she wanted me to know that it could make things worse in that I might not heal well, might get lymphadena, general anesthesia risks etc. Yet, there is no medically proven benefit to outweigh these and other surgical risks. That said, she is willing to do a mastectomy without axcillary dissection (presumably because we already know that cancer cells have spread beyond the breast) if I want it. I should mention my initial mass was more than 8 cm so there is a lot of scar tissue remaining and of course most likely some remaining cancer cells that are not visible on scans. My inclination is to take out as many of the offending cells/sites as possible but I can't wrap my head around the fact that they say no proven medical benefit even where there is no evidence of cancer in other body parts right now. Has anyone out there experienced similar? Would appreciate hearing your experiences. Thanks much and be strong and positive - we always have hope!
