Sore throat after each chemo?

Ok, so first AC treatment, did pretty well. Second one...about 4 days after I woke up with a sore throat and had patchy red spots on the back of my throat. Saw MO and he put me on a antibiotic just in case. It cleared up after a week and I was ready for round three. Well, about four days after the third I AGAIN have a sore throat. It feels exactly the same as the last one minus the red spots. I read that the lining in the throat can be affected since they are fast growing cellls. Has anybody else experienced this? Tried doing a search for sore throat after every chemo but didn't really come up with anything.

Thanks,

Julie

Hi Julie -- we're so sorry to hear you're experiencing this painful side effect! In fact, sore throat can be a side effect of some chemotherapy. Also, mouth and throat sores can be caused by chemo. See the main Breastcancer.org site's side effect page on Mouth and Throat Sores for tips on how to manage this side effect.

    We hope this helps!

As your doctor if acyclovir might help. Sores/sore areas in the mouth and throat are common with chemo. If you're not in it already, you might want to join the June 2015 chemo thread.

Thanks for the replies. I am already part of the June chemo thread. I guess I just wanted to see if anyone else got a sore throat after every chemo. I will talk to my MO about the acyclovir.

You probably are already doign it, but make sure you suck on posicles and alternate that with chewing ice. That way you are swallowing some little pieces of ice too and you freeze not just the mouth, but the throat. That helped me on AC this year. Back in 2013 when I did chemo, I had a sore throat everytime nad MO could not figure it out. I was complaining about it to a friend that's an ER doc and she went across the street to a Walgreens, bough Zantac for me, and I could kiss the ground she walks on. It helped 1000%. It was heartburn aggrivating it.

    Hi Julie,

I have had a sore throat (and mouth and tongue) during and after each chemo session, but apparently no infection.  (I have had 3 of 6 sessions so far.)  Besides sucking on Pine Bros. Throat Drops, I rinsed my mouth with a solution of baking soda, salt, and warm water.  I believe it is 1/4 teaspoon baking soda, 1/8 teaspoon salt, and 8 ounces of warm water.  That really helped!  Good luck to you.
