Hello Fellow Members:

In case some of our Fellow Members weren't aware, decided to copy and paste this article and picture of this despicable criminal ex-doctor Farid Fata. In my opinion, he should be given life imprisonment without any possibility of parole.

Cancer doctor who prescribed $35 million worth of unnecessary chemotherapy gets 45 years in prison

Farid Fata cancer doctor needless chemo Michigan ex-oncologist Farid Fata of Crittenton Cancer Center in suburban Detroit.

A Michigan oncologist who gave $35 million in needless chemotherapy to patients — some of whom didn't even have cancer — will likely spend the rest of his life in prison.

After an emotional week of testimony from 22 of his victims, a federal judge sentenced physician Farid Fata to 45 years in prison, NBC News reported. He'll also give up $17.6 million in cash, according to The Detroit News.

Fata scammed more than 500 of his patients, according to court papers cited by NBC, either by misdiagnosing them just so he could bill healthcare companies or giving chemo to end-of-life patients who wouldn't benefit and had to endure the treatment's nasty side effects during their final days.

"They came to me seeking compassion and care. I failed them," Fata told US District Judge Paul Borman, during his sentencing, according to NBC. Fata pleaded guilty in September to 16 counts, including fraud and money laundering, the Detroit Free Press reported.

For example, Barbara Laboissonniere's father Sydney received chemo he didn't need from Fata, Fox News reported. Doctors originally told Sydney, diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, to enjoy his last four to six months with his family. Fata, however, allegedly promised to prolong his life to 12 months. After aggressive rounds of chemo with only week breaks in between, Sydney died on the experimental treatment.

"The way my father died was very unnecessary and very traumatic for my family," Laboisonnier told Fox.

The FBI also alleges that after one patient fell and hit his head in Fata's office, the doctor told him he should complete chemo before going to the hospital, according to the AP. The patient reportedly died from his head injury.

Fata did have his supporters, though. Theresa Pickering, one of the his patients, wore a "Cancer sucks" T-shirt to the beginning of the trial in 2013. Originally diagnosed as an end-of-life patient, she credits Fata with keeping her alive during her four-year battle with throat cancer, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Regardless, US Attorney Barbara McQuade described Fata's behavior as "the most serious fraud case in the history of the country," while Borman described his crime as "huge" and "horrific," according to NBC.

More detail articles related to this can be found by googling his name Please forward it to as many people as possible. We want everyone to remember him for this cruelty, as well as to remind ourselves that there are medical professionals like this who gives the dedicated professionals a bad name. We also want to ensure that he never get out of jail - should he hire another lawyer to lighten his sentence.

Nats, I've been following this story, too, and started a thread on the stage iv forum about it. There's also another thread on the subject on these boards. It's incomprehensible that a human being could inflict this kind of torture , most especially a doctor.

@ TheDivineMrsM, Most absolutely...and to cause the unnecessary death, pain and suffering of so many people who placed their trust in him - On 2nd thought - Farid Fata who intentionally uses his skills and knowledge to both abuse and take advantage of his patients in the name of profit, must be sentenced to lifetime imprisonment without the possibility of parole in a maximum security prison.

Apparently, Federal prosecutor Catherine Dick did asked for a 175-year prison sentence....but why did the Federal Judge** only gave Fata 45 years? He's 50 + 45 = 95. He could still be alive!!! Farid Fata still have tons of $ stashed away somewhere so he can buy influence around prison...we should all be monitoring him so that if anyone is to help him get out of prison sooner, we must all work together to ensure that that will not happen !

We who are cancer patients, or those who may potentially be, we must also remain alert and let our guts and self-education guide us along the way. If something does not feel right , either seek a 2nd opinion, or get someone else to help you find the answers... No doctors can say for certain that he can "extend" another's life for XX months or years by taking more drugs !!! Ridiculous.... When we are weak, or fearful, some will try to take advantage of our weakness and fear. We became easy victims, easy targets....We must guard against this....talking to someone at, for example, a cancer hotline, may help too

** We need to check out the name of the Federal Judge that gave him the lighter sentence which Fata does not deserve. There's something fishy here, and it's stated in the link below that he could be parole after 25 years for good behavior !!!

Really? A person with a licence to kill who actually uses it to kill, and that Federal Judge can't see that and only gave him 45 year? How could he do that? Farid Fata should be permanently locked up so that he would never come out again. Wow, we really need to know who this Federal Judge is.

Yes, I just read in this link below that he was found out when his office manager discovers a high turnover of employee and some doctors.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3157443/How-office-manager-cancer-center-turned-multimillionaire-doctor-plunged-hundreds-patients-bankruptcy-falsely-diagnosing-cancer-giving-unnecessary-chemo.html

I just can't understand why doctors who worked under him didn't report him to the American Medical Association? Don't they have a fiduciary duty too? To leave so as not to cause any trouble to themselves? What about the patients? If it wasn't because of the proactivity of Farid's office manager, George Karadsheh , this Fata would have continued to harm more people to finance his lifestyle and what not. His crocodile tears in court won't move me under any circumstance. His remorse will be false ones in the hopes of getting a lighter sentence. He is not a doctor as he has no heart. $$$$$ is his where is heart is and damn with his patients! His medical license should be permanently revoked.

I feel AMA should look into these other doctors and suspend them and strongly rebuke them for their irresponsibility to their paitents, do you agree, fellow members?

I agree that there should be an investigation of other doctors. Whether they should be suspended depends on what they knew and what actions they took based on that knowledge.

Update: Name of Judge in Farid Fata Case

The name of the federal judge who gave the light sentencing to Farid Fata is U.S. District Judge Paul D. Bowman. He is a native of Detroit, MI.

Being that he was an ex Chief Federal Defender and an assistant U.S. Attorney, he could see the seriousness of this case (there were more than 2 unnecessary deaths - premeditated murders) aside from the more than 533 patients whom he has intentionally harmed (not a small number). It is a big puzzlement as to why Judge Bowman did not consider Federal prosecutor Catherine Dick's request for a 175-year prison sentence OR even gave one close to it, like 100 years so we know that Farid Fata will ROT in prison OR at least we can be rest assured he wont be able get out to continue doing his evil deeds.

I'm truly keen to understand Judge Bowman's rationale for handing down this light 45 years sentencing to a doctor whose actions were pre-meditated, intentional, based on greed and NOT the well being of his patients, and who is fully aware that his deliberate mis-diagnosis of those same patients will result in their suffering physical, emotional and mental pain an!d anguish for the rest of their lives.

Judge Bowman also sent Fata to a mid-security prison, and NOT even a maximum security prison !!! Isn't the latter for serious offense, for crimes involving killings? Does Judge Bowman think what Fata did not serious enough? They were all pre-mediated and intentional, after all!

And...by the time the 45 year sentence was handed down, it seemed it was reduced to 43 because the time he was held in custody were considered sentence served. Are they kidding???

Furthermore, with good behavior, it seems Farid Fata could be out of jail in 25 years' time!!! (Don't you now agree that Fata's getting the better end of a deal RATHER THAN the cancer patients and their families?)

Fata was a Lebanese cancer doctor before moving to the USA (wonder how many of his own country's patients he has hurt before arriving here?)

Do any of us cancer patients want this slumbug be out of prison any time soon? I know I don't because a leopard NEVER changes it's spot.

So, let us all be aware of this person's name, and ensure that wherever he is, he will not practice mediinel and anything relating to this field ever again.

Let us also keep on eye on Judge Bowman too. Can anyone figure out why? Is there anyone in MI who may know something?

    Below is the Judge's BIO.

This doctor needs a dose of his own medicine. I wonder if he has any idea of what chemotherapy is like for us. He will probably get out early for "good behavior".

I certainly hope not, but u are probably right...normally I dislike law firms taking advantage of situations to have class action suits, BUT in this case, I am ALL for it..and give my support to all MI patients who have suffered under Fata. He should be nailed too for medical malpractice and serve more time, and pay monetary damage to his patients from all his ill-earned income (8 centers he had, it seemed)

Here's an interesting advertising by a law firm about how patients who was treated under Fata can sue him for medical malpractice - and about MI law such cases (copied and pasted here). It is interesting read and to know something of this nature, though it differs on a state by state basis.

...If you, or a loved one, were treated by Dr. Farid Fata, we are here to help you

You should request your medical records from the Department of Justice, as soon as possible. Follow the instructions below to obtain your records:

    Current Patients

    Phone (313) 496-4348 or (313) 226-9633

    Former and Deceased Patients

    Email usamie.victimservices@usdoj.gov

If you have no access to email, phone (313) 496-4348 or (313) 226-9633

Be sure to provide patient name, address, phone number, and email address

In order to fully investigate your case, you will also need records from other treating physicians and hospitals where you, or your loved one, were treated. If you need any assistance in requesting these records, or if you would like our firm to obtain these records for you, please give us a call. We will pay the costs of obtaining these medical records.

Once all of the records are obtained, this information must be reviewed by an expert oncologist to determine whether Dr. Fata committed medical malpractice. Our firm can make sure that is done for you.

    Statute of Limitations

Under Michigan law, there are time limits on when you can pursue a medical malpractice case. The time limit is typically two years from the date of the malpractice. However, where you were not aware of your injury and its possible cause within that two year time frame, you may have an additional six months from the date that you should have been aware of your injury and its possible cause. Therefore, you should contact an attorney as soon as possible.

    Free Consultations

Our firm will discuss your potential case with us, order the records, and have them reviewed by medical experts. Our costs and fees are contingent upon your recovery of proceeds. In other words, we will pay these costs up front and our law firm will not receive reimbursement for our costs or fees unless we obtain a recovery for you.

    Compensation for Victims

Unfortunately, Michigan law limits the amount that patients can recover in medical malpractice claims. The limitations are dependent upon the specific facts of each individual case.

Our firm believes strongly that Michigan's limitations of damages is unconstitutional. Moreover, limitations on damages hurt those who are already hurt the most. It is our belief that these damage limitations protect the doctors and other health care professionals who do the most damage. Our firm is committed to the fight to overturn these caps.

Will This Be a Class Action Case?

There is still a significant amount of investigation being undertaken regarding Dr. Fata's treatments. Our firm is collaborating with lawyers from all over Michigan to provide our clients with the best possible representation.

One of the considerations is whether a class action could be certified by a court. In order to pursue a class action, each individual claim must have common questions of law or fact. It is unlikely that this case will be a class action because each individual patient received different treatment from Dr. Fata and suffered different types of injuries.
