Thank you so much Ispy. I'm counting down the hours until I can have these bandages removed. Has anyone else experienced significant post-op swelling/fluid retention? I feel as though I swallowed a baby elephant. Not surprised that my chest is swollen but my stomach, hips and thighs are too.

Hi Plumster1 😊 I live in Orange County too. My surgery/IORT was at Hoag. I absolutely love my BS, PS and Rad Onc. My entire experience at Hoag was phenomenal. Please let me know if you have any questions. I've met the most wonderful women since being diagnosed who have been so supportive. I would love to pay it forward Where in OC are you?

In regards to some posts of constipation from pain meds. Four days after surgery and no BM, took Colace twice in 24 hr. and nothing. Then DH said remember you had problems before after surgery with this and you took prunes and it worked. Totally forgot about that, so ate four prunes and VOILA, worked like a charm! So am just eating some prunes everyday while on pain meds.

SweetPea, I had my lumpectomy on Thursday and I still have very significant swelling in the breast, chest and slight swelling in my arm. I didn't notice stomach or thigh swelling.

I didn't have much trouble with constipation, but I remembered from previous surgeries that walking really helped my system reboot. So I've been doing some easy walking in the neighborhood.

Good luck to Tshire and healing thoughts to her and everyone recovering today!

1sweetpea, I am in North Tustin. How about you? My surgery is with Dr. Police at UCI. But, I consulted with Dr. Silverstein at Hoag (and Dr. Carpenter at St. Joe's). It was a tough decision. Both my kids were born at Hoag and that was where I was DX. But, Dr. Police was the right fit for me. That being said, I heard great things about Hoag and had two friends who used Dr. Snyder and loved him too. Who is your BS and PS?

For all you LXer's, I am suppose to be on a plane 13 days after surgery. My BS Said i should be fine baring some complication. So that is also why I'm following your progress as you go along :) thank you for all the updates!

Good luck to all the surgeries today!!

Thinking of all you strong women today!

1SweetPea, I had nipple-sparing DBMX on 7/7 and one of my greatest take-aways was the tremendous amount of air that was trapped in my body! It was like I had swallowed a lead basketball. On top of the other pain it was an unexpected nuisance. It took several days for it to go away.

I hope you are all doing well-

Plumster - I had my LX a week ago and have been walking and swimming since Friday. I am flying tomorrow after my MO appointment and don't expect any problems. Sending good vibes your way

All my best to those of you recovering and healing and good wishes to those headed in this week.

In another note: One great supplement my chiropractor recommended that I have found works to keep you regular is Magnesium Malate or Magnesium Asporotate. I take 1-2 each night and it works wonders. You can increase as needed to get it to work. It also helps with joint pain.

    (((Hugs))) to all of you!

Free123: air?! Criminy. My sympathies! Had abdominal air bubbles after ovarian surgery last year, an experience I do not want to repeat (either surgery or air....)

Sailorgrl: (trying not to sulk) My surgeon wouldn't let me swim for two weeks after either lumpectomy to let the incision heal; and I didn't have lymph node dissection. Is there a difference in incision technique? (Otherwise healing ok)

Queen- I have two incisions and on the discharge papers it said I could shower and swim right away. They are dissolving stitches and are healed pretty well. I did swim in a pool that has a salt water system which I thought was therapeutic, for sure. We live in Arizona so getting in that water was refreshing! Not sure I'd have swam in a lake though and I did wash the area with Hibbicleans afterwards. Hope you can get back in the water soon!!

Huh. Good to know: I can't remember what stitching for the first one--it looked more, um, stitchlike than whatever the surgeons used for for my ovarian and back surgeries last year, but staples for the second....though the 'no swimming' was the same for both. I'm seeing the surgeon on Wednesday: I'll ask him then.

Update: had a preventative bilateral mastectomy last Friday the 10th. Had my first BS post op appointment this afternoon. She removed the drains because there wasn't much fluid all weekend. She said that when lymph nodes are not taken the drainage is less. She does not want me to swim in a pool or beach or soak in the tub, but I am allowed to shower now. Frankly, I am so tired today that I think I'll take a shower tomorrow instead!

I have been able to stop using the percocet for pain. And now I use extra strength tylenol, & I have the ok to use Advil or ibuprofen.

I was worried about constipation with percocet. So I did buy some stool softener. But I only took 2 capsules post op. I also have been eating and drinking things that help. Lots of water. Prunes. Grapes. My daily cup of coffee. Whole wheat bread and waffles. I think the prunes and grapes did it though. This morning I passed that hurdle! Lol. I definitely recommend the prunes to anyone to doesn't mind eating them.

Without the drains, the surgical bra I am wearing is still tight, but feels more comfortable. I don't have to wear it if I don't want to, but it helps to protect the steri strips and keep them in place for a few more days. There was a stitch holding each drain in place. And every time I moved a certain way the stitches would get pulled, and that hurt more than anything. Otherwise I was just sore in the chest area. Having the drains removed was probably more anxiety than anything. I didn't feel a thing on the right side when she pulled that one. But on the left side I was more sensitive and it burned for a minute while she pulled it out and a few seconds after. She also took some bandages off that were over the incisions, which are covered in steristrips. That was like pulling off a bandaid that had been stuck on a sensitive spot for a few too many days. But not bad overall and I'm happy to be more comfortable!

I was also able to see how flat i am without reconstruction and i am very okay with it. I'm down from a 36b to flat. 2 diagonal lines like a "V".

Gentle hugs to all my July surgery sisters, those recovering and those waiting to have their surgeries. I will be keeping you all in my thoughts!

wow, more bad news for me today. My pap came back bad. According to the internet some freaky rare thing? atypical glandular cells? What is going on? Are my girl parts just rotting from the inside? I dont understand. I have not led some wild life style. I was healing along pretty well with this and now this surgery feels like why bother. Just kill me now.

I'm more than depressed. I don't even want to face my BS appointment Wednesday to see what continued torture I am to endure and now I have to anticipate something even more horrendous at my other end.

I know everyone will say don't jump the gun. Just wait and see, it could be nothing. Don't get worked up.

Nothing had been nothing this year.

Plumster1, I'm in Coto de Caza-not too far from you. My BS is Lisa Guerra, MD and my PS is Andrew Smith, MD. They're an amazing team. They both came highly recommended by friends who are also physicians. I just had my bandages removed so I feel much more comfortable.

Free123, I think the general swelling is beginning to go down a wee bit but you're absolutely correct, it does feel like a lead basketball. 😊 My right breast is still very swollen but that's to be expected since surgery/IORT/reconstruction was only 3 days ago. Everything is healing beautifully. I'll receive my final pathology report Thursday when I see my BS. Praying the nodes are still clear and for the margins to be clear. 🙏

Mira845, I'm so sorry...hoping and praying all goes well at your appointment Wednesday. 🙏 Big (gentle) Hug to you.

Mira845 - sorry to hear you are having rough go this week. Its ok to have a bad day here and there - we all do, just don't forget that there are lots of people who love and support you. Let them!

Surgery tomorrow for me. Had my nuclear medicine injection today - not sure if I just have a high tolerance or if there was some super mojo working for me - but other than some small sting with the numbing injections - didn't experience what I would call pain. Am off to do the shower with the thing with the special soap and calling it a day - going to b a long one tomorrow. Expect to be in the hospital 2 nights so will be MIA for a couple of days.

Best wishes to the ladies with surgery in the next couple of days! Continued healing for the post surgery sisters.

Hi female, I am going on august 7 for a preventive mastectomy. I had my first one last august because DCIS. I have had 3 biopsies on this one since last June 2014. For me it is was peace of mind. Not knowing if I would get cancer again. I have had thyroid cancer and breast cancer. I was blessed not to have to do any treatment for either. I did spend some time in debating to do this surgery after my bs said she would do it if I wanted to do this. Hugs to you.

Ladies I did have antibiotics during my surgeries, but only got a infection after my surgical biopsy.

    Healing hugs to you all

Tam-iam, How are you feeling? I started walking the day after surgery but it didn't help with the swelling. I asked a friend of mine who is an OR nurse and she said sometimes the combo of anesthesia and the fluids given during surgery result in a lot of fluid retention post-op. It shouldn't last longer than a few more days, I noticed a decrease this morning. The breast swelling may last longer though as I had a lumpectomy, IORT and reconstruction done at the same time. How is your pain? Hope your recovery is going beautifully. 😊

ProudAuntie Wishing you the best today and sending prayers.

I'm off to another long day at work with pre-op appt. for lunch. It's finally becoming real. I went through the BMx in shock so I'm determined to make my choices known today at PS.

has anyone heard of or experienced hot flashes after surgery? yesterday and last night I was a mess! I had the temp down to 70 with a fan right on me, no blankets and I was still hot! Too young for menopause and not on hormone therapy yet. I did stop taking the Norco a day ago and just switched over to Motrin because I hate how it makes me feel. No fever or signs of infection. Just and extremely uncomfortable hotness!

Other than that, my recovery has been easy. I am going to push myself a little today, I have been really coddling myself!

Glad to hear everyone is doing well and I am praying for those whose surgery is yet to come! I absolutely love the "gentle hugs!" what could be more perfect?!?!

Skysquirrel: dunno if I've been having hot flashes--the weather got hot (for Michigan) after my surgery--but I've been feeling unusually and unevenly hot since!

1SweetPea: thank you for relaying what your nurse friend said about the anesthesia. I'd noticed, after all four surgeries, that I'd gained about five pounds, but was back down to pre-surgery weight within a week, and thought it was due to the IV fluids only. (If I have another surgery, gotta remember to ask surgeon what to do about the inevitable muscle cramps once my body starts eliminating all that fluid!)

SweatPea, thanks for asking. The swelling is getting better and the soreness is very minimal.

I had my follow up with my BS this morning. The path report hadn't come in yet, but she spoke to the pathologist over the phone. The margins were clear, but I have macromets on two out of three sentinel nodes. That news hit pretty hard, especially since the early path test during surgery came back clear. We were a bit blindsided. I guess I'll be needing chemo after all. One bit of good news is my BRCA test came back negative.

I hope your swelling improves soon! I had to look up to see what IORT means. That sounds like a great technique.

Good luck with your surgery today, Proudauntie.

Any suggestions for vitamins or supplements after surgery? My surgery is this Friday 7/17 and I am wondering if there are certain vitamins that we were recommended to you.

    Thanks!

I am thinking about everyone today and hoping you are all hanging in there. I go from trying to be Pollyanna (Some of you mature ladies probably remember this movie from the early 60's. It's one of my favorites. For those younger gals, watch it while your recovering. It's so cute and uplifting!) to thinking "Holy Crap Why Me?"

Just met with MO to set up plans for chemo which will start in Sept because, da** it, I am going to finish my summer at the lake in Wisconsin where it is a tad cooler than 105! Thankfully the MO said there is a 3-month window to start treatment.

Hugs to all for good healing!

Tam-iam sending hugs. Have you met with a MO? Hang in there.

ssteacher you can get some good recommendations for supplements on the Tamoxifen boards. I take several that help the SEs for my Tamox/Lupron combo therapy. I have to check with MO for adding ones but she's open to most of them.

I take calcium, mag citrate, D3 Biotin, A, C and Probiotics plus a multivite. I'm even going for some kale and quinoa to supplement my vegetarian diet.

I'm also slowly and carefully learning about essential oils.

Sadly most soy is out as it mimics estrogen and that's one of the hormones MO is shutting down.

Hi ladies! I'm getting ready to have another surgery on August 6. It will be my fourth. Another revision. I am 43 and was first diagnosed with stage 2 a year ago on June 12. I had 8 rounds of chemo then my mastectomy/TE placement, then TE revision, TE exchange and now a true revision to make my foobs bigger. I have not had great luck with the recon process...nothing terrible just not great. I was supposed to be a C cup after my recon and I am lucky if I am a B right now. My implants are spread out and very flat and I have rippling and a dogear on my right breast. This surgery is supposed to take care of the dogear and bump me up about a cup. My surgeon says I'll have to live with the rippling which seems odd. I look forward to getting to know you all.
