MI cancer doc gave chemo to hundreds of healthy patients
I hate the rage posts that have become so prevalent in journalism and social media, but this deserves awareness. No wonder people are distrustful of the medical community.
Doctor to Be Sentenced for Giving Chemo to Cancer-Free Patients
Prosecutors are seeking a 175-year sentence for a Michigan doctor who intentionally misdiagnosed hundreds of healthy patients with cancer to line his pockets.
A sentencing hearing began Monday for Dr. Farid Fata, who gave unnecessary cancer treatments to 553 patients. Fata was arrested back in 2013 for the health care fraud.

553 patients! That's obscene, disgusting and despicable.... He really couldn't find people who were actually sick whom he could treat. Thank God for the other doctor who became the whistle blower for this doctor and luckily, the woman broke her leg or this would have continued even longer.

I saw this on the news as well. MusicLover took the words right out of my mouth. What a messed up greedy SOB.

Does anyone know if doctors get paid from pharmaceutical companies for each patient that they enroll in a clinical trial?
-
Linda, I doubt it, I think that the FDA may have guidelines that need to be followed.
-
yes he was a close family friend dr they "thought" he had cancerhe died after his first chemo treatment got up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night and collapsed just terrible
-
I had heard briefly the news on tv about it, it is truly awful- i think the man has paid for a condo in hell- but the story was exceptionally well written and I really wish all the newsworthy stories had such good reporting. Thank god for the integrity of the young doctor making the rounds that day for Dr. Farid (more like Fraud) Fata.
-
Wow!!! The motive was Medicare fraud and who knows what else. I think the comparison to Bernie Madoff is apt.
Linda, yes doctors are compensated for enrolling patients in clinical trials. BUT.....and this a major but, they have to follow very stringent guidelines for enrollment. One of these is a pathology report. There is also an independent clinical nurse to do the reporting. I was in a clinical trial, and you have no idea how much scrutiny I was under. In my case, they didn't believe that I was actually out there cycling and I was. Fortunately, I had pictures of me out there on my bicycle.
You can read up on the guidelines by visiting ClinicalTrials.gov. Hundreds going on for breast cancer.
The reason for the extra compensation is for the reporting and all the associated paperwork. It's more work for everyone. BTW - clinical trials are absolutely critical for moving the state of the science forward, and the only way for us to learn if a promising treatment in the lab is going to beat back cancer. I have a friend who is alive today because of Herceptin and Perjeta. I was seriously worried 6 months ago.
I think a nice slow drip of AC is in order for this creep.....prior to a trip to a toasty place in the hereafter. - Claire

I think many of us would be willing to donate one of our infusions for him to take....

Kill him with Adriamycin.
Seriously, though. The man had to go to a LOT of trouble to be that cruel. He is a special level of monstrous. May he share a fiery pit with Mengele in the afterlife.
-
Supermax in Colorado is too good for him. He will have to answer to God one day.
-
I was pleased to hear this afternoon that he was sentenced to 45 years.
-
45 years is not enough for what he did. Unless he spends those 45 years getting unnecessary chemo, surgeries and radiation.
-
I have to agree 9 12 but was concerned he would get off w/ a fine and minimum prison time. 45 years is a start.
-
I've been following this story for several days. I am appalled with his light sentence. I just read that it is likely he will do about 35 years of the sentence and that it will most likely be in a minimum security prison. I heard that the sentence is to ensure that he never practices again. Patients wish that the judge sentencing this person would have imposed a far greater one to send a message that this will not be tolerated.
I liken this man to Josef Mengele, the Nazi doctor who committed war atrocities by experimenting on humans. -
What a FUCKER.

Agree with you, Kayb,,, it was assault and /or attempted murder. All those people suffering for nothing,,,, such cruelty.
