Adhesive TAPE - help need to find non-allergic

Interesting report that changes my previous assumption & things I've posted. I had a place on the outside of my arm that dermatologist needed to biopsy. So I'm supposed to keep it covered with neosporin for 2 weeks & change dressing every day. This is not a particularly delicate area - outside of the upper arm. I had Medipore tape at easy reach and thought it would be great based on past experience. Oops. In 24 hours I had itching and thought, oh well it's healing. In 36 hours I had severe red & bumps. I've since switched back to my old standby - Hypafix tape - and no more problems. I really did think the two were equal since both are used for delicate skin & in hospitals for long term wound care. Hmmmm. Teach me to assume.
Trickling, I know you're still watching this thread even though you life has moved on - so HI to you.

Hello trickling: Sorry you have to go through this....have you considered using masking tape? They are secured and easily taken off of whatever. On skin, I've discovered they do not hurt...I've had the top and lower part of my breast taped after biopsy whereby that tape pulled off 2 penny size skin off of the right side of my right breast. Now there are two very visible penny size scars there while the entire areola is healing from a doughnut cut incision from re-constructive surgery. Luckily, both my Surgical Oncologists (SO) were wonderful and true professionals. I love them both. The healing is doing fine. Was told it would leave behind a circular scar which is supposed to fade with time. And I do have GOOD NEWS to share with everyone here...
Now for all of you who have scars from any sugery or incisions of any kind, I would suggest using Mederma Scar Cream. I have just ordered a tube and a tube. Reason I'm saying this is because I ran into an acquaintance girlfriend who had 3rd degrees burn on her left hand. Half of her entire skin section on her hand was badly burned, leaving a white skin exposure and scars. She told me it was painful (I'm sure). Other than the scars, she has healed. I thought she was quite brave. A few months later, I ran into her again. I saw that her entire hand had returned to normal without any signs of scarring. You wouldn't know she had suffered 3rd degrees burn on her hand. I was delighted for her, and asked what she did. She told me that someone recommended her to buy the Mederma Scar Cream and massage it several times throughout the day. She did it for a week and saw how fast her scars were healing. Then she continued massaging until her hand healed and the scars gone. I was extremely glad for her, and for asking her her experience.
She did tell me that new scars will heal faster and better than old scars. Old scars will not have the same effect. maybe just lightening of the scars. I remembered her advice now when I saw your question. When your blisters have completely heal, you may wish to order this from Walmart online for home delivery. Then start applying to see how it goes. All the best to you and other sisters here who've had the same experience as you....Have a great recovery.
PS. Please come back and report if the masking tape help you.

Bump again!

I too am allergic to tape, I had 8 breast surgerys and my surgeon used a spray to cover my incisions. Worked great for me I also bought tape from a medical supply that worked really well when I had my nipple reconstruction .

2ndchance2012 welcome to the community, and thanks for sharing your experience!
-
Yes 2ndChance welcome. Glad found something that worked. What kind of take did you take to your surgery?
-
Thanks to each and everyone who is posting and/or pass through this thread. I am taking and will continue to take a long hiatus from posting. However, I just want to confirm that I think of you often.
As far as my re-testing or trying anything new: the new hasn't surfaced and the old is on hold as I have learned from my experience that, personally, I'd actually have to experiment on my breasts rather rely on the results from other body areas. For the foreseeable future I expect to be dealing with my contact dermatitus, which has been acting up. Otherwise, be assured I am doing well.
Yeah, like some of you, not having a solution is an accident waiting to happen.
Stay cool!

Thanks for posting. I too am taking a longer hiatus unless something significant happens. Have a good Summer and keep well.

Bump. Have a good summer everyone!

!!! I love Canada !!! Just posting to let all you wonderful CANADIANS know that I am working on adapting the following mural mosaic on 4 inch squares of hardboard, which will be durable enough for group participation. Loooong process = many steps x 231 pieces each time. I anticipate that after I get at least 2 coatings done, I may be more successful in attracting volunteers to help with the final coatings. Since I want the back of each piece to have the artist's info, I am in the process of manually scanning the rear of the images, printing the scans, cutting the prints to size, adhering the info prints with diluted Elmer's glue to the rear of the blank hardboard pieces.
All of that is really preparation for step one, which will take place only after all the info papers have been adhered, followed by a black primer/paint (Krylon = 2 steps in one) spray painting of the blank front sides.

What an ambitious project. Good luck. Nothing much going on around here. I learned to play Bunco recently and shared one of the prizes yesterday. Also saw Lyle Lovett Concert and loved it. Enjoy and keep healthy.

I too had a severe reaction to the surgical tape used for my biopsies. I mentioned this to my doc before my BMX and he took care of it. I had no problems with the tape they used for my surgery. With all the other concerns we have at this time Im shocked that they made that your responsibility!

Thanks Moon. So glad to see you posting again.

I find I don't have issues with steri-strips, so I sent my husband out. He got CVS brand steri-strips, in white, but dag, they get expensive, if using for 'tape'.
-
knmTwins - interesting idea. I'd never thought of using steri-strips as tape

Bump for newbies
-
when they placed my port for chemo I developed a blister under the Tape so bad that I had to go to the wound center for 8 weeks. It was there I found out about this tape that they would apply to my dressing. It is the only tape that I can use without allergies.
you can get it on Amazon
- Hypafix Dressing Retention Tape: 2" X 10 Yds Each by Smith & Nephew
It is the only dressing I do not develop a rash and such with. -
exercise-guru: Thanks for the recommend. Hypafix is the only tape I can use also. I thought I could use Medipore, which many hospitals have instead of Hypafix, but can't go 24 hours w/o redness & itching & blisters.
Try a barrier film before taping. I have individual packets infused w/a liquid that you wipe on your skin before putting on the tape or bandaid. Or sometimes available in swabs. My favorite is Applicare, which my infusion center has. My hospital has Cavilon, which works OK and you can actually buy it from 3M in reasonable quantities. Both are used for colostomy bags around the access area access to protect the skin from the constant stomach acid & body fluids - so adhesive trauma & friction are a natural.
-
Thanks for the link. I have bought it, but hopefully won't be needing it. I had severe blistering with all tape I tried after my surgeries
-
i got a blister on my foot during my trip. Used a big bandaid on it. Sure enough when I went to change it, I had the big red square from the bandaid. I was at the doctor the same day I got home and had to explain it so he wouldn't panic because I'm a diabetic. LOL I know better, but I thought just once.... LOL

Bump for skin sensitivity, adhesives, chlorhexidine etc.

-
Moon - thanks for the bump.
I routinely carry Hypafix tape with me when ever I go for a doc appointment. It makes all the difference.
-
really good stuff. It's the only tape that does not cause me to havean allergic reaction.
-
bumpty bump for people with adhesive issues!
-
Went for a port access yesterday and forgot to tell them to use the Cavillon or Aplicare wipes. If they wipe one of these products on my skin where the 'adhesive' will go, I can pull off the 'bandage' without pulling off all my skin with it. Otherwise I'm in trouble.
Thanks Moon for bumping.
-
Bumping for GAMomma. Some great info.
-
And bumping one more time for anyone else who has tape abrading their skin. Great info to read through. A number of good ideas. Several of us on here will answer even though the thread isn't current.
