Radiation starting Monday- question on emu oil
I am new to this board, so grateful to have found it! I will be having 25 rounds and 10 booster rounds starting this coming Monday. My RO is very adamant that I use nothing but the cream he will give me to use. I think he is just older and set in his ways... I have read so many posts regarding EMU oil and quite frankly am considering going against his advise and using it as well as the cream he gives. I am allergic to cortisone creams so is there any others I can use for itching that do not contain cortisone? What brand of EMU is best and which is better oil or cream?
Thanks in advance!

Cweber68, I used emu oil against my RO. I found out after it is because emu oil is considered an anti oxidant. However I had absolutely no problems with my skin through rads except the last couple of boosters I developed a couple tiny (mm) blisters. The techs were so impressed with how my skin was holding out they kept asking what I was using. I finally told them and got scolded! I use to put it on right after tax, then a couple times after- always before bed. For me, it really worked, but be advised that the anti oxidant quality may negate the radiation. In hind site I would research more before using and ask if it would interfere with radiation. I would think radiation goes through just about anything.

Emu oil might be beneficial during radiation but it doesn't do the Emu's much good to be turned into oil!
There is scientific research showing calendula oil is more helpful than most other products for preventing skin problems during radiation.
I was happy with using Calendular oil. I still occasionally use it.

The RO I consulted for a second opinion was the one who told me about Emu oil and said they had been impressed by the results for those women who used it. My own RO was completely fine with using it, too.
I hesitated to purchase it because, frankly, I didn't want to use an animal oil. However, they are processed for meat and the oil is refined as a by-product of that use, so it's not as though they are being killed solely on our behalf.
I like the Emu oil. I started using it on my skin about 2-3 weeks prior to RT and will continue for at least a month afterwords. I use pure aloe vena and the Emu oil.
After 12 tx. I have some "pinkening" (as opposed to reddening) along the outside of my breast and nipple region. My back could have used more lotion - I wasn't given accurate information as to where the effect would be and couldn't see it until this Friday. So it's a bit tan - not red, not pink. However, my clavicle is doing fine (knock on wood) and that's one are I was really concerned about. My axilla is fine, too. Like you, cweber, I'm doing 35 tx. so am watching very carefully for problems.
There are several brands of the oil available; I use one from New Zealand that I bought through Amazon - I think it's called New Zealand Naturals. There's also a company in Montana that produces Emu oil that's organic fed., etc. Some coops and health food stores carry it as well.
Calendula's nice and great for many people; I got a rash from it, which I later learned could be due to ragweed allergies.
With any product, be sure to A) Shake Well before using and
Do a Patch Test First!!!
cweber - good luck as you start today. If you'd like to join the Summer Radiation group we'd welcome you and be happy to support you through the process.

I used Emu Oil after I learned that my rad onc had recommended it to someone with very fair skin having RT at the same time I was, and we both breezed through RT without any problems or damage. At the time, I picked it up at a local natural foods market. Don't recall the brand, but wherever you get it, be sure it's very pure and smooth. I actually bought 2 because the first one I tried had a bit of grittiness to it that I didn't like. The 2nd bottle -- probably a slightly higher priced one -- was silky smooth.
Good luck! Deanna
