ILC not seen on MRI?
I was diagnosed with IDC in June after suspicious ultrasound and feeling a lump. Mammogram was clear. A few weeks later I had another ultrasound on my left "healthy" breast. She found a "distortion" there, so I had a breast MRI with and without contrast. Breast MRI came back negative for everything but the IDC tumor, including no detected lymph node enlargement. So I was told another biopsy was not necessary. I am a little tender on the outer sides of both my breasts, where the "distortion" was- but not the IDC, that was near the upper areola.
I am now wondering, what is the chance that this distortion in the other breast is ILC? I'm getting a lumpectomy on Monday so they won't be operating on my other breast. I'm worried.

Tiffany, I can't answer your question, but if you are unsure, you can always get a second opinion...be your own advocate. Since you have BRCA genes, it puts you at higher risk. Good luck with your LX on Monday. Hop on over to the "Hill Country Warriors" thread if you would like to chat with some local ladies. We have get togethers now and then. In the "Help me get through Treatment" forum. ((HUGS))

I'm actually BRCA negative.
-
tshire, I think the false negative rate for MRI is less than 5 percent

oh, I saw your profile with the genetics on it and thought maybe it was +; mis-read it, sry!

My ILC was not seen on mammogram, but it was visible on the MRI.

As with barbie56, mine was found by biopsy, but never seen with mammography, only seen on MRI

I want to add that before the MRI, my oncologist did a clinical breast exam and her words were 'I feel something'. I never did, but ILC is subtle. Sure enough the two sites that she felt were positive for ILC and the biopsy and MRI confirmed it.

I had a mammo, US and resultant biopsy of suspicious microcalcs with an ILC diagnosis. My surgeon ordered an MRI and the residual ILC was evident on the MRI and it also found another suspicious spot that turned out to be benign. I am very confident with my MRI results and it helped guide my surgical decision. I did a lot of research on MRI and the literature suggests that it generally has a higher false positive rate than a false negative rate. I think the most important thing to do is get the best medical advice you can and once you make a decision, don't look back. You are young and it is not uncommon for your breasts to be tender or to be dense in places.
Hugs, MsP

Thank you!
keepthefaith, I just added that on there because I am so young people were often asking me about my genes!

My ILC was found during a routine mammogram....then they did a ultrasound/biopsy and confirmed - the MRI then showed there was nothing new that hadn't been seen during the ultrasound - my other breast showed up normal with the MRI - I think I was incredibly lucky that it was found this way - I didn't feel a thing and nor was there a "lump" per se - just a string of small dots ranging from the largest at 1.8mm to 3mm....
