Vit D information to share!

Options

Dear all, just sharing that I've been taking Vit D supplements for years, even before the dx...my D was just tested and I got the results today (my MO tests about 1x a year) and I'm at 67, which is optimal. I am taking Sprouts liquid D3 supplement 5000 IU (5 drops equals 5000 IU). I take TEN drops a day. 10000 IU. And I live in No. Arizona, where I get plenty of sun. Although I use sunblock nearly all the time I'm out, I won't use it when I walk the dog which is usually before 10, with exposure about 35 minutes a day.

I'm posting here because I know that I wondered how much supplement to take, and this dose seems to be working fine.

My D levels have always been strong--but they are right up where the recommendation is according to my MO. It seems better that we are all on the higher end of the D3 spectrum--40-70 I think.

I was surprised to read that the new findings are indicating levels in the 30s (and probably around 32) to be the ideal now.

Sure wish they could make up their mind.

I was surprised that my onc said that although higher levels of D protect us from that initial diagnosis, there has not yet been any research proving that subseqently raising our levels protects us from recurrence. Seems a nobrainer, so maybe they just haven't bothered to look into it?

I know, I thought about that too. So after the fact, if your Vit D levels are higher than normal or at least normal you have less recurrence chance. But in my mind it would work the same way AFTER a dx (I'm a great rationalizer) so I'm keeping mine higher than normal as much as I can!

Even if it does nothing to prevent a recurrence (and I tend to believe it does), having normal/high vitamin d levels must surely help prevent a new primary, also a concern. I too, try to keep my levels up and believe it is important to do so.

I am on Arimidex and was having such pain in my leg, I could barely walk. This was a leg on which I had a prior knee replacement. In June, I went for my yearly check up to monitor blood pressure and was found to have only 12 on vitamin D. So, I was put on prescription D for a few months. I take it once a week. Great thing is, after taking it 3 weeks, my leg pain is so much better. So if people are having a lot of joint pain and think its meds, maybe get your D checked.

My doctor doesn't seem to think vitamin D is important as long as it is in the normal range. That being said, I have been taking 4000mg of D3 for almost half a year now and my count just came back at 66. It had been at 45.
