Major Duct Excision vs needle biospy

Can anyone offer any input on why a surgical oncoligist would recommend a major duct excision vs a simple needle biopsy? My one and only symptom is a bloody discharge. I have had a mammogram, ultrasound and MRI all with negative results. My family insists I consult another physician for another opinion.

Thank you for your feedback.

Usually because they suspect a papilloma (benign) or something like that is growing in the duct and causing the irritation & bleeding. It is a really minor procedure & most women I've seen here have reported back afterwards that it wasn't bad at all

I had a duct excision June 23rd. It's the most common procedure for a bloody nipple discharge. My pathology report came back as a benign papilloma. I was a bit sore for 2 days but ice and motrin were my best friend.

Thank you Melissa.  Your comment places me a bit more at ease.  Did

you have any itching prior to the surgery?

Thank you Naenae,  I wasn't sure if this is the norm.  Obviously the surgery is done to

identify the problem.  I really appreciate your feedback.

Thank you Melissa.  Has anyone had itching along with the bleeding?

Every once in a while my breast itches almost as tho there was a healing

    process going on.

    Darla, I haven't had one, so I don't know.

The problem is there probably aren't many here who have had one because the gals with benign conditions move on and don't hang around. Holiday weekends are really slow too
