Anyone have radiation after DIEP?
Comments
-
I had a BMX with immediate DIEP reconstruction in April, 2013. Now I've had a recurrence in the left breast and I'm going to be starting radiation at the end of July. I'm finding very little information about the effects of radiation on a DIEP. I think it's probably in my favor that it's two years later. Any DIEP ladies out there who had radiation after DIEP? It sounds like maybe I could have some fat necrosis develop and maybe some shrinkage? I went through a lot of pain and money to get great cosmetic results (NOLA girl) and I'm sad that I might lose that. I love that every doc who sees me can't believe that I've had a BMX because they look so natural.

I am sorry you are dealing with a recurrence. I had a SS NS UMX with immediate DIEP reconstruction. See my signature below. After chemo - I had 28 radiation treatments which started just about 7 months after surgery. I did not experience any change to my reconstructed breast from the radiation and I would make the same choice again.
I hope it works this way for you.
Radiation is different for each person also. Personalized plans according to your specific tumor(s). I also had my supraclavicular nodes included due to the # of nodes which were positive.

Hi Diana. Thanks so much for replying! I know everyone is different but it makes me feel so much better to read that you didn't experience any change. Makes me feel like there is hope! I will be having full breast plus supraclavicular nodes and internal mammary nodes radiated-30 sessions. But first I have to get through one more chemo, which all in all has gone better than I expected. I should be done the week my kids go back to school.

I also had radiation after my BMX with immediate DIEP reconstruction and had no trouble at all. Everything held up well. -
I'm so sorry to read about your recurrence. I had DIEP in June last year and started radiation in July, as soon as I was able to lay flat (no easy task 5 weeks after surgery). I had no change to the DIEP breast. I was very concerned heading into radiation and very pleased after. Best wishes to you.

Thanks, Aff... that's very reassuring! It feels vain to even worry about, but after all I've been through it's nice to look in the mirror and still feel like me. :-)
