Alcohol and Chemotherapy

What has your doctor said about alcohol intake during chemotherapy?

I'm not a big drinker but I usually have 2-3 drinks during the weekend.

Since I started chemo, I haven't had any but there have been days I'd really like to have a drink. I meant to ask my doctor on Monday and totally forgot.

I think every MO has their opinion..... Mine says it's fine!  I did not even want any during AC but since Taxol is a little easier I have had a beer or two on my good days.

Keep in mind that Taxol is filtered through your liver so your liver function may be somewhat compromised, asking it to process alcohol stresses it further. Add in more liver stress if you are taking anything with acetaminophen in it, like Tylenol, Vicodin or Percocet.  I had six rounds of Taxotere at three week intervals and my MO was not opposed to an occasional drink - I did not drink any wine because it tasted like vinegar but did have an occasional beer, and usually right before the next cycle - so three weeks from the last one.  Weekly or dose dense Taxol may make this more problematic because of the frequency of infusion and dosing strength.

Ask your Dr. Different ones have different thoughts on the subject and our individual situtation. I was told that on a very special occasion it would be okay to have 1 (or perhaps 2) but not daily or even weekly. I did have about 1/2 a beer 2 days after 2nd neoadjuvant A/C after driving my first Powder Puff Mud Bog and did better than Son or any of his friends had done. After my 2nd run when I got back to the pit area, they had a beer opened for me so I didn't want to be rude and not take it. I also had 3 Midori (honeydew melon liqueur) and soda on the rocks with Thanksgiving dinner that year while I was on adjuvant weekly Taxol, with my Dr's approval - if it was something I 'normally' did for did for the Holiday. His only concern was that I not drive at all that day if I had any,'adult drink' tthat day as we were taking Son, his GF and her Mom and G-mom to Deadwood for dinner - I wasn't.

We are all different as are our Drs.

My MO said a glass of wine, and even encouraged it. I only recently started allowing myself the occasional drink, though, since alcohol raises estrogen levels and my tumor was so strongly ER+. I don't think I will ever feel comfortable drinking at the levels I did pre-diagnosis (which was still very moderate compared with most people).

I got a hold of my doctor just a few moments ago and she is okay with the occasional drink as long as I wasn't on narcotics.

molly1976 - I read more about alcohol increasing estrogen levels and found an article that stated that high intake of folic acid like spinach, broccoli, corn, legumes and multi-vitamins appear to mitigate the increased risk

I was emphatically told no multi vitamins or 'anti-oxidants' while on chemo. No grapefruit/grapefruit juice or persimmons. I was given permission to take Vit D (for my SAD), Calcium and Super B during chemo. 1/2 way throught Taxol I had to start taking K (potassium) as my levels plummeted. Dried garlic suppliments can be considered to be an anti-oxidant but as I use a lot of garlic (and onion) in my normal cooking, I was given permission to use it as long as I used fresh only (all I ever use anyway).

My DRs rule is no alcohol 24 hours before or 48 hours after infusion, NO exceptions. And then, some is allowed ONLY if you aren't taking anything else (ie. anti-nausea, steriods, immodium, etc.)

As I understand it, Taxol is cleared through the body within 24 hours, so it's best NOT to have alcohol for 24 hours. If you do, keep it a small amount. I have a half of an organic low alcohol beer 2x a week--it helps me get my appetite up which is important to me. But I also take liver clearing and liver supporting herbs (milk thistle, dandelion root, turmeric) as well as cruciferous vegetable supplements to support my liver.
