DIEP construction looking for a DR. in Morristown, NJ
Hi Ladies,
I was recently diagnosed and told I need double mastectomy. I am going to a breast surgeon from Morristown Memorial tomorrow and then I guess I need to see a plastic surgeon. Has anyone had DIEP done at Morristown Memorial? Any suggestions for a plastic surgeon? I don't know if I am a candidate for this but I would like to try and find out.
Thanks!!

Hi ssteacher, welcome to BC.org. Sorry that you have to be here for this reason, but glad you found us and decided to post.
We hope other members from your local area post soon with some suggestion about plastic surgeons. Until then, we recommend you to take a look at the section called Breast Cancer 101 -- Breastcancer.org, that will help you sort through all of the information on our site to find what is more relevant to you right now, recently diagnosed.
Please, let us know how it goes tomorrow.
Hugs,

It went well thank you so much. She really took her time with me and referred met a plastic surgeon to discuss bilateral mastectomy options. I am going to see him on Monday.
Thanks so much for asking! This support group is great!

I just found this thread. I'm not sure if you have had your surgery or finalized your plans. Dr Schmid with Summit Medical Group did my DIEP at Overlook and I am thrilled with the outcome.

Their whole practice is breast reconstruction.....

Thanks so much for replying. I am going to have my surgery next month at Morristown Memorial. How was the surgery? I am getting a bilateral mastectomy and the diep flap done for both breasts. How long was the recovery period? Thanks so much for your help

I was completely overwhelmed heading into surgery and learned that wa perfectly ok. The ladies in the DIEP thread kept me sane. They also helped me be prepared for all the little details the PS couldn't possibly tell you about. I'm not going to say surgery was easy but it was tolerable. The pain diminished dramatically each day following surgery. The drains were one of the worst parts of recovery. As soon as he removed the last drain I felt like a new person. Make sure you know if you can shower with your drains or not and if your PS will have you in compression after surgery or not. I found that there are so many different approaches to the same surgery. It won't change your plan but at least you will know what to expect. I was walking about 3 miles a day by week 6 or 7, but everyone recovers at their own pace. Some ladies went back to work after 5 weeks. I was fortunate to be able to take 12 weeks off after surgery. Feel free to PM me anytime with questions. Sending best wishes your way.
