Possible lymphedema?
I had a lumpectomy and SNB in March of 2012 on my right side. Since then I have had noticeable swelling in my right hand and arm twice. The first time was last year and I didn't call the doctor because the swelling, although significant, was gone by the next day. Yesterday, after pulling weeds in the garden with gloves on, my right hand and forearm swelled. It wasn't huge but was uncomfortable. Most of the swelling is gone this morning but a few of my fingers are still a little "tight" feeling and seem more difficult to bend and hold on to things. Could this possibly be signs of mild lymphedema? If so, is it typical for it to come and go? Is this significant enough to call my doctor? Thanks for any advice.

Hello, amcarter,
What you're describing is certainly the way early-stage lymphedema can act, and the sooner you get a referral to a well-qualified lymphedema therapist, the easier it will be to control this chronic condition going forward. So, yes, give your doctor a call. Here's information about how to find a well-trained lymphedema therapist near you:

Please do keep us posted, and feel free to ask any questions you might have--lots of experienced and knowledgeable ladies here who "get it"!

Thank you Binney. I did call my oncologist at Duke & they have referred me to a lymphedema specialist. They said something about wanting me to wear a compression sleeve when gardening & working outside. Really?!? I guess the therapist will be the one to determine what to do. It just seems weird. Swelling seems to be completely gone after 5 days but fingers still feel a bit stiff. I am admittedly bummed about this.

Angie, I hear you on being bummed--we've all been there, believe me! Here's a brief article that has helped some of us cope with a new lymphedema diagnosis:

There's lots more information about lymphedema on the StepUp-SpeakOut site as well.
You're right about the therapist being the one to help you sort out the best approach. Wearing compression for strenuous activities (and travel) can help prevent future swelling and help you manage this more easily and conservatively going forward, but it's important to get the right compression garments for YOU, which a therapist can steer you to. Good for you for getting prompt help! It'll be good! Please do let us know how you're doing.
Gentle hugs,
Binney
