I'm trying to understand everything. I have stage 0 dcis high grade. My oncologist wants to do lumpectomy plus radiation and 5 years of hormone therapy.

Lj061197 so sorry you have had to find yourself here but there is a lot of info here that will help you to understand what what your diagnosis (Dx) means.

I had the same Dx, including the more unusual descriptor of "high" grade. For the purposes of understanding info on this site, consider it to be grade 3 unless you are told otherwise.

I found reading the sticky thread in this forum "a layperson guide to DCIS " to be invaluable and I have read it several times as I have gained more understanding and formed more questions. I really recommend you read it and the info about DCIS on the main board about DCIS

Then ask away. There are a lot of people with a willingness to share their knowledge and experience and/or offer a comforting word or two.

Try to take a deep breath as you gather more info and try not to second guess things too far out. Deal with each decision one at at a time.Ask questions and make sure you are comfortable with your own treatment decisions before you proceed. And good luck.

    Jac

hi, I was just recently dx with DCIS intermediate to high grade. I meet with my surged on Thursday. I have no clue what he will say.

I'm sorry you have to go through this too. It really sucks. I'm mostly afraid that when they do the post op pathology they will find something worse than DCIS in there. It's so hard to take care of my kids with this looming hugely in my mind

CAMommy....this is the worst of times for you. You know there is a problem and you are waiting for the plan to take that problem and kick its ass! You need to take each step and each decision one at a time and try not to second guess things. My motto since diagnosis (DX) is " don't worry about things until you know (for sure)you have to worry about them".

When you meet with your surgeon on Thursday, You will most likely be asked to choose between a lumpectomy (with radiation therapy) or a mastectomy. Your surgeon may have their own view, as did mine, about what you should do, but you must be your own advocate in this decision and be sure about what is right for you.

I strongly recommend that you read the sticky thread on the DCIS forum called "layman's guide to DCIS". I have found it invaluable and have read it many times since DX because as I learned more, I had new questions.

It does suck, but you have found the right place to learn from others and ask questions that may help you to make your decisions.

    Good luck on Thursday

    Jac
