hi all, I'm Madison 22 from Staffordshire in England. Recently diagnosed. They say being her2 positive would be common because of my age. I don't no my ins and outs just that I've had a left breast mastectomy and all my left lymph nodes removed. I'm frightened and anxious about everything to come. All I seem hear is bad stories about this type of cancer & also because of my age. Any positive feedback would be greatly appreciated . Thanks again.

Hi Madison I was 29 when diagnosed with her2 positive cancer as well.like you I was very sad and upset finding this out and was told because of my age it was likely to be aggressive and her2. My oncologist informed me that her2 is not what it was 20 years ago and don't look at all the old statistics. With herceptin our outcomes of survival are much better and they are coming up with new drugs perjeta is another newer drug I am also on that targets her2. People actually want to be her2 positive now because there are so much more that target this type of cancer! Stay strong I know it's scary

    Hello Madison,

Welcome to the BCO Community. We're really sorry you have to be here but we're really glad you found us!

As Stephmoen mentioned, the most commonly used medication for HER2 + Breast Cancer is the targeted therapy: Herceptin (trastuzumab), which works by attaching itself to the HER2 receptors on breast cancer cells and blocking them from receiving growth signals. By blocking the signals, Herceptin may help to slow or even stop the growth of the breast cancer, as well as helping to fight breast cancer by telling the immune system to destroy cancer cells onto which it is attached.

Another option for some women with HER2-positive breast cancer is Tykerb.

For more information on these HER2-targeted therapies, you can click on the links below.

    Herceptin, Tykerb.

Sending big hugs and healing wishes your way

Hello, I am Jennifer in San diego california. 47 and recently dx with breast cancer Her 2 + I just had a double mastecomy and I am starting chemo soon. I had hormone positive cancer 4.5 years ago on the right side and did a lumpectomy, radiation and chemo. This time I opted for double mast. I really am not interested in all the talk about if it was a mistake. It is done. but I understand you are scared. I am too. I still have to decide about radiation or not to my armpit and/or chest wall. I am started reconstruction and would really hate to mess it up with radiation. all very confusing,...
