Weird feeling in the throat

My wife was diagnosed with Stage IIB BC in October 2013 on her left breast. Since then she had Mastectomy and Radiation and now is on Tamoxifen. She was node positive but after chemo and during mastectomy, all nodes came out clear and her margins were clear. She gets treated at Stanford.

For a week now she is experiencing a weird feeling at the back of her throat (only on the right side) where that tongue ends and the throat begins. It started suddenly. It is like something soft is there and with mucous. It goes away while she is eating or drinking but then comes back. No pain, no problem in swallowing, no caught, no sore throat. Her Onc told her to monitor for 2 more weeks and not to worry right now.

Any suggestions what this could be ?

Hi there - haven't heard of anything like that before, but it might be worth seeing a dentist to see what they can see? They can check for abnormalities in the mouth and on the tongue. Might be worth a trip to put your minds at rest.

Thanks blondedoris. This is totally freaking her out and she is thinking the worst. I tell her that I have rarely heard of mets to the throat from BC. Will go visit our primary care tomorrow.

Not sure if thats the case as the symptoms disappear temporarily with eating and drinking only to come back after an hour or so.

Visited primary care. Nothing alarming according to him and advised to give it more time. Will follow up with ENT specialist on Monday.

I'm wondering if it is some consequence from radiation???

I am not sure. She had radiation 6 months back and on the left side. This is on the right side.

It may be the result of reflux or heartburn, especially as it feels better after eating or drinking. Very common even if she doesn't actually feel the other typical heartburn or reflux symptoms. Stress can make the sensation worse because it causes the throat muscles to tighten on top of being stressed and hyper aware of it.

An ENT can put a camera down her throat via her nose and tell her in a matter of seconds if there is anything there.

Good luck! I hope she feels better soon.

Thanks GoldenGirls. I hope it is just reflux. She never had reflux in her life before though plus the issue is only on teh right side. Going to visit ENT specialist tomorrow.

    let wireline,

    Letmywifelive.....

It's amazing how the body can work on us. The same happened to meabout 6 years ago. Went to the ENT and he diagnosed Acid Reflux. He told me lots of BC women come in and get this as a side effect of the stress they go through. Stress causes so many bad things and of course our minds go back to recurrences every time. I was given Nexium but it took a good three month to make that feeling go away. Hope this helps you guys. I would suggest she has the Dr. Scope down there to put your minds at ease,

Let us know how she does.

I'm going through this at the moment and am so worried but can't tell anyone in my family because I don't want them to worry. I am waiting to see a Specialist who is going to put a camera down my throat. You are not alone - good luck :)

artsee thank you so much for your post. I just googled Acid Reflux and it is almost exactly what I have been experiencing. So now instead of thinking I have throat cancer I think I may just have Acid Reflux or GERD. So thank you. I really love this place, it's very reassuring sometimes :)

Hi Try googling LPR or laryngopharyngeal reflux . It's a form of reflux that goes up to the back of the throat, and the irritation causes the lump sensation and excess mucus. Generally you can't feel it when eating or drinking. I've been diagnosed with it and almost never have heartburn.

Thanks micronancy and artsee. Yes googled it and the only condition she has is the lumpy sensation in the throat which does not go away with swallowing. The odd thing is that it is only on one side. Did anyone have the same experience (one side) ?

And fizzdon52, best wishes to you.

Because of the irritation in the throat, hence the mucous comes to try and protect the throat. When you swallow food it is gone with the food but the minute you don't eat the throat protects itself with the accumulation of mucous again. Sigh........

Checked with ENT specialist. Nothing alarming. It was a case of either acid reflux or anxiety. Thanks everyone for their best wishes and advise.
