Hi all - I finished chemo (TCH) 12 weeks ago and am dying to color my hair. I'm only 38 but its an awful ashy grey color (normally my hair is brown). My onco said its okay to go ahead and color it but I know some people say to wait 6 months. Since its so short I think i'd rather color it at home myself but am worried it will come out orange or something! Anyone have any advice they want to share? Should I wait?

Hello, You may want to check and out and post on the Hair, Hair, Hair thread.  I was told that you shouldn't use permanent hair color until your former hair texture has returned (at the earliest about one year post final chemo).  My last chemo was 7/24/14, and I've used only demi permanent hair color only - do it yourself from Sally's.

uh oh maybe I jumped the gun lol. I finished chemo at the end of December and have had my hair colored twice since then. Once on April 15th then touch up on May 28th. It's semi permanent hair color. It seems to be fine. I like it anyway.

My hairdresser recommended semi-permanent colour until I had - at least - 6 months of growth. She said that it was because your skin can become very sensitive during chemotherapy and semi-permanent colour was gentler on the skin. Even, then, however, she said to do a patch test on the back of my hand before going ahead with the semi-permanent...

I went to a hairdresser who had experience with after-chemo hair. It was well worth having it professionally done......I didn't want to mess it up after just getting it back! Mine was permanent dye & I didn't have any trouble with it (6 months after before I had enough to color). I know she couldn't put in any highlights until it was longer.

I had my hair colored about 3 wks ago, about 5 wks after final chemo. She used a semi permanent color with no ammonia or peroxide and it was great to get my roots covered again. Next time we're going to be doing highlights again and likely back to regular color. I cold capped during taxol herceptin for 12 wks and followed all the rules. I didn't lose any hair and after coloring everything is holding so far so good. My stylist did a lot of color research before she selected something for me

Hairdressers are great that way. Mine was wonderful. She had lots of advice and tips about post-chemo hair- and skin care that really helped. She, also, gave advice on choosing wigs (i.e., advantages/disadvantages of real hair vs. synthetic) and nail care both during- and after chemo.

I covered that "pelt of deceased rodent" as soon as I could. Same permanent hair color I normally use. Then it looked fab to rock uber short. Ditched that wig as soon as I could. This was 2.5 months past final chemo. I never looked back.

This was the same hair color I used prior. The upgrade is that I have someone great cutting it now. I know I am doing a good job of things because they actually asked at the salon if I had also had my color done there!

I took the post chemo period to do a general image upgrade, and what I would recommend. So not just "different", but much better. So I also recommend a trip to a good cosmetics counter for a makeover. That is, once you get your hairstyle settled. That way, you look chic and current as opposed to mismatched and outdated. Major, major step going forward. - Claire
