Breast "junk" tends to come Heinz 57 where you get several different diagnoses at once. Do you know what kind of atypia yet? Different kinds carry different levels of risk. It is good you are getting the MRI so they can make sure they don't see anything else concerning. Get a cooy of your pathology.

My friend had this, and she had an excisional biopsy to be sure nothing else was present (and it wasn't).  She's being followed as somewhat higher risk (won't need MRI's but followed in a high risk clinic at an NCI Breast Cancer Center).

I had DCIS taken out by lumpectomy. On my follow up mammogram they saw new calcifications; I had a biopsy that showed a papilloma with NO atypia. However, from all of my research, the doctors like to take papillomas out because they can hide cancer -- the fact that mine grew so fast in the last six months makes it more suspicious. What kind of doctor or facility are you being treated at? I literally researched high and low, and every legitimate cancer center I checked, including my own NCI designated comprehensive cancer center, says that a papilloma needs to come out by excisional biopsy -- and that's even if it does not have atypia. So the fact that you have atypia makes me go "huh?" Good you are getting an MRI, but what kind of doctor and where told you that you should just be watched?

ispy, it was taken out. She said she had a duct excision. I'm sure if the MRI saw anything else they would recommend further biopsy. It all depends on what kind of atypia it is
