I actually prefer the gross weather because I don't have to cover up and use globs of sun block so intensively. Plus, where I am there's likely to be drought and we received a wildfire preparation warning this week, so rain is good here.

BAM! Taxol #2 is in the books! No problems or issues. I can count the chemos left on my hands now. No need to use my toes anymore! Wishing all of the other ladies in the chair today minimal side effects. Congrats to all those finishing AC! Now to sleep off the Benedryl and then get something done.

Hi April Ladies, you guys have been chatty. I had AC#4 yesterday woo-whoo! Four down, four to go. I saw MO, and this is what I got on Taxol:

    1. 95% of patients do better on Taxol than AC. Less nausea, more bone pain.

    2. I'll have to take steroids at 12 and 6 hours before (Melissa - this is my first steroids before an infusion, I got 8 mg - 2 tablets - by mouth at each AC infusion). 20 mg ea! So five pills at 9:45 PM, then five pills at 3:45 am before infusion. They said to take the Ativan to help with sleeping - yeah, right, like 5? No steroids after the treatment, I assume continue with Zofran for nausea?

    3. Premeds will include Benedryl and other histamine receptor blocker, and nausea (i assume the Emend).

    4. I may or may not have to have Neulasta shot after - depends on blood counts. She's thinking not the first one, but maybe the 2nd.

    5. I asked her about icing hands and feet, and she said they haven't found it to help. She suggested Glutemine, 10g 3x a day starting 3 days before treatment. She suggested getting the powder. I was going to stop at TJs to see if they had it, but I didn't have time. Where do you get your Glutemine?

    6. We talked about my working, and she is going to suggest that I go off work so that I can attend to "self care".

    7. I have to go to a podiatrist today to look at my toe. It started oozing the other day (ok, after I picked at it). It's clear liquid, but it is still all swollen and red.

Lots of other stuff of course, but those are the highlights. I feel better about it. My sister is going to drive me and stay with me until they get the Taxol going and through anything that might be, but I'm feeling like they know what to do with the reactions if any.

Today I've been very busy with work and trying to return calls and send emails. The end of the school year is so busy anyway with meetings and such. I've been trying to get LOA stuff worked on.

The weather has been very rainy and cold, not good for my mood.

    Lynne

A giant toast to the ladies who are finishing up their tango with the devil today! (cranberry juice toast that is). Positive-Spirit, good tip on the hand and foot icing...i need to start that. My toes are wrecked with blisters, cause I'm a dumb-ass and didn't ice as a preventative measure.

Ok, Taxol crew....paclitaxel, not taxotere, just to be clear. I gotta know any details for survival. So far, I expect to be sick and in pain for the weekend, since i'm getting my first dose of poison on the Friday. But...do you guys feel physically stable after that? My husband needs to know if he can leave for two weeks. Well, actually he is going to be gone for about a month, and I can't expect my Mom to stay that entire time. He is a wildland firefighter, and 'tis the season, so he can't really say no unless its an emergency. He actually needs to know today. I really don't want to make him stay home if I don't have to. Its aweful, becuse I know there is really no way to know how I will react, but I really need your feedback. I'm gonna call my MO now as well. Fracking fire season! No fires unless I can come play too!

Little blue, are you doing dose dense or weekly? I have it weekly and I was a little tired on days 3 and 4, but I was fine. No "yuk" feeling of AC. MO said infusions 7-12 tend to be harder because of cumulative effects. So far he has been spot on for me. Days 3-4 I was tired, but perfectly functional...nothing like days 3-4 of AC. I could have worked if I needed to. I had minor pain and heartburn, but that was pretty much it. My pain was not even bad enough to take Tylenol. My DH has some traveling to do this summer and I told him to go ahead and go. You do not get neulasta unless doing dose dense, so blood counts can be an issue with time. If they are, they give daily Neupogen. The further they fall, the worse you feel. My hemoglobin fell again, so that explains why I've been a bit more tired. Don't plan to be sick...plan to be well and feel good; you probably will feel good.

Lynn, My premeds were similar. Since I am getting weekly Taxon, I did not have to take steroids ahead of time. I get Decadron in my premeds, along with Raniditidine, Benadryl, and Aloxi. Congrats on finishing AC!

Thanks Lynne and KBee for the Taxol reports! I am getting Dose Dense for now, and if I can't handle it they will switch me to weekly. Sounds like I need to start the Glutamine now...dang it.

Lynne, is your toe infected? Are you doing anything special for it? They told me OTC hydrocortizone for itchy feet, and to just come in for blisters.... I ran yesterday and wound up with 4 blisters after a 3 mile run. Hobbling around in flips today at the office. I have to hike Thursday, so I'm expecting to have really F$&ed up feet to celebrate starting Taxol.

Little Blue flowers - it looks like we may be in the same boat here. I finished my last dose of AC on Friday and feel like crap right now. The metallic taste in my mouth is the worst. I can't get rid of if with mouthwash, brushing teeth, I tried gargling with soda and salt - but it won't go away. I can't find any food or drink that tastes ok.

I was going to do weekly Taxol but they changed to Dose Dense to accomodate my travel - it is 220 miles one way - so my first of 4 Dose Dense Taxols will be June 12th. Does anyone know if it will be better with the Taxol - as far as the metallic taste? What a trip. I'm definitely growing weary.

Taxol affects my taste, but not as much as AC, and AC was not as bad as Taxotere as far as taste.

Little blue and georgie, painwise, I am guessing dose dense Taxol is similar to Taxotere. I needed Advil for about 2-3 days each cycle. I felt like I had back labor! It was not constant though. With weekly, it was just mild fleeting pain and only occasionally...at least for the first one The dose dense Taxol is a long day. One hour premeds and nearly 3 hour infusion. It will be nice for you to be done a month sooner though.

Kbee- Way to go girl!! You truly keep inspiring me!!

    Littleblue- LOVE the shirt-so cool!!

Congratulations to everyone who has reached the 1/2 way point or is finishing up!! Wahoo-better days ahead ladies!

My damn post-treatment rash reared its ugly head AGAIN 6 days ago (well actually it reared itself on MY head to be exact). As the weekend went on it got worse (on my eye and ears again too) so the MO put me on a week of steroids which I started yesterday. Yep... chemo-the gift that keeps on giving!

Addie- the "fills" were not too bad at all for me. For the 1st couple of times I went, the nurse had suggested that I take a muscle relaxer (the ones they gave you when they sent you home from the BMX) an hour before the appointment. I do think it did help. I will say the first fill I did get a bit "whoozy" and had to remain on the table for a bit (but I think to be honest, it was all because of my nerves not bc of any real discomfort). Good luck! I just scheduled my final reconstruction for Aug. 13th so I have a few weeks to recover before returning to work for a new school year the first week of Sept.

    Hang in there ladies :)

Hi georgie! I can definitely relate to feeling like crap, and I've just given up on tasting food or having an appetite. EVERYTHING tastes like baking soda. I have to eat protein, preferably meat, almost every hour though, or I crash, hard. Even eggs and dairy don't prop me up much. Sending good wishes your way, chemosabe!

Thanks for the info, Kbeee! I called the MO this after noon and he said the same thing..expect pain for 3 or 4 days, but it should improve after that. So...husband can go fight fire lol. Poor guy. Other than that, he said SEs are about the same as AC...but add neuropathy. Looking forward to 4.5 hrs in the chair this friday!

Has anyone else noticed even thinking about treatment makes them nauseous?

ksusan, that happens to me too! Seems like it's almost like a second cycle of cells dying and being cleared out or something...

georgie, have you tried sucking on lemon drops? The taste I get is a bitter, medicine taste, which makes me nauseated. The lemon drops do the trick for awhile!

littleblue, yes, I get nauseated at the thought of the chemo room. I see the MO on Friday and will have to walk past it....ugh!!!!

I figure it's the point at which I've exercised enough that I'm squeezing the chemo out of my fat cells. Friends have told me they had little chemo resurgences months later after, for example, losing weight or exercising hard.

I hate to say it, but I look forward to going for chemo because doing something for my future makes me feel powerful. I'm sure if I were having a lot of nausea, I'd have that nausea-conditioned aversion to the building and room. I have a little nausea this cycle, but I'm also a little tippy, so I figure both are from losing stereocilia (hairs in the inner ear that affect balance). My job between now and chemo is not to fall--I have a friend who tripped on a cord the day before her 4th chemo, broke her shoulder, got blood clots, and couldn't use her port for the last infusion. I am absolutely holding hand rails and being really intentional when I get up to use the bathroom at night!

imagehow are all of the last ac ladies feeling? I went in yesterday for my last ac and this morning I actually feel pretty decent. Usually by this time my whole body hurts but that hasn't hit me- yet. I don't know maybe it's from the extra fluids they gave me yesterday because I had a headache. But whatever it is I love it! Ac 3 made me feel horrible so my dr added emend to my treatment and i think it's made a difference. Also I started using some do terra deep blue rub and omg it's amazing, I highly recommend!

honestly I was only awake once last night and that was to pee (after drinking 22oz of water) and the grab a snack. I slept from about 8pm to 1am then from 2-6:30am so not too awfully. Before they lowered my steroids I was up like 5 times a night. Lowering them has helped me so much.

Princess, Glad you are doing a little better today.

Addie, I can't believe they weren't giving you Emend. Why do they make people suffer before giving them the meds known to work best???!!! Glad you are doing better so far. I hope it continues.

ksusan, I agree with your attitude about chemo. I do really try to think of it as my ally in this fight as well. When shemo ends, it actually is a bit stressful because the "now what" phase starts and the worrying about every ache, pain, lump and bump that we never would have given a second thought to before.

Lynne... My toes is still alil red but not doing the oozing anymore.. Hope yours is getting better.. I get blisters on at least 3 of my toes every time I work, but they don't hurt and seem to go away quickly. I must be in that 5% that feels worse on taxol. Hopefully they'll get better as I go on.. AC did for me. Be prepared for that Benedryl.. Felt like I had 3 glasses of wine after

Here is my haiku for today:

    Day three post chemo
    Feeling wicked hung over
    Side effects be gone

The podiatrist said for me to soak my feet in warm water and betadine (sp) solution 2x a day for 10 minutes. Antibiotic ointment and bandage. Have I managed to do that today? No, I've been in bed all morning - working when I have meetings and answering emails, but feeling like CRAP. This morning I have the light sensitivity again, and I could hardly keep my eyes open. One of my husband's coworkers called the house last night at 1:03 AM (he's in building maintenance, so it could have been a butt dial or mistake, but not a prank). I could not get to sleep after that - finally turned on the TV and was up until 4:30 so now I'm exhausted. Have all the feelings of being hung over, but none of the fun. Getting the fluish feeling - my throat is sore again. I so hope this is the last time for this.

I know Taxol is supposed to be long, but I was at infusion for AC for at least 4 hours each time - including blood prework etc. This week appointment was at 10:15, and I left after 3 PM. So, will it be longer than that? I did end up spending more time with MO than I do with NP. My first Taxol is with NP though, so I'm figuring 5 hours total.

I will be on vacation for my 2nd Taxol, I'm beginning to realize that I'll probably have to come home the night before, get rides to/from, and then come home and have a nap before I can return to Maine? The drive is about 1.5 hours one way. I really don't want to have to spend 2 nights away . . . I'll look for your advice on this one.

    Lynne

Steph, Glad you are doing a bit better; I hope things improve every day.

Stacey, I sure hope Taxol gets better for you!

Lynne, If you do Taxol dose dense (every 2 weeks), you will have about an hour of premeds, plus 3 hours of Taxol. Then add on blood work and appointments beforehand. If you do it weekly, you can subtract 2 hours of Taxol. I like your poem. Here's mine:

    First it takes your hair

Then your brows and lashes are bare

    Takes every taste bud

    And turns it to mud

GI stuff, let's not even go there.

Today I turn 45. I have mixed feelings. I used to hate birthdays and getting older. Now I appreciate them more and realize what a privilege it would be to get to live to old age. I was diagnosed at 43..spent much of 44 getting reconstruction and such and then my new diagnosis. I am hoping that at least the second half of 45 will be a bit more relaxed and returning to normal...whatever the new normal is. Feeling a little emotional today; maybe because I wonder how many more birthdays I have left. More likely because I had 2 hours of sleep thanks to steroids, and am coming down off them which leads me to be a mess for about a day. I have not had a walk/run today, but will head out on a long one after lunch to get my head in gear. Hubby is working, so the kids are making breakfast for dinner...my favorite...score one for me!

Thankfully I feel good today and am having no side effects from the Taxol other than the red steroid face. I saw a different MO last week and did not tell him about the run because he did not know me at all and I knew he would never ok it. My MO thought it was awesome that I did the run and asked me what other runs I was doing this summer. He runs too, so we were chatting about various races around the area. Better head out for my run soon before it rains again!

A good day to all with minimal side effects. We are halfway through another week... 1/2 of a week closer to being done.
