edited August 2015 in High Risk for Breast Cancer

I had genetic testing done, 27 genes tested. Came back with several issues most I will learn more about tomorrow. The one they are concerned with increases my chance of multiple cancers including breast cancer. This is also a cancer that runs extremely high in my family. Meeting with a surgeon Monday to discuss having the radical surgery done. This is something that while I am only 32 I have thought about this and it's what I want. Don't want to worry all my life. Will also be discussing having a hysterectomy also as that is another cancer that runs high in my family

PreK, nice to meet you and I am glad you found this website. Genetic testing has become so important, and can reveal so much about us and what could possiblybe ahead. I know you have some big decisions ahead. I hope you get good counsel, good advice from your medical team. My thoughts are with you.

So I had a significant mutation of the PTEN gene and not as high but still a concern with the STK 11 gene. Seeing the breast surgeon Wednesday to talk about and schedule surgery and then getting in to see surgeon about a hesterectomy also. I may be just 32 but totally feel at peace with doing this and think it is the right choice.

I had a hysterectomy at 47 (would have had it much sooner if they would have done it), for fibroids. It cured my anemia, which was great. Kept the ovaries. My bad. :P

My breast cancer was dx'd 10/2014, and I had double mastectomy 11/20/14. In February 2015, I had a biopsy that showed thyroid cancer (papillary), and had thyroid removed on 3/9/15.

I'm going to the genetic counselor on 5/19/15. My breast surgeon told me about PTEN. Then the medical oncologist told me that they could test the tumors directly. She said she'd order it, but I'm unclear as to whether that order was actually placed.

I know I'm older, but I had always planned to have bilateral should I ever get diagnosed with cancer. When they actually told me though, I decided to investigate all the options. I'm really glad I investigated; and I'm completely happy with my decision to stick with my plan.

Doctors won't allow both surgeries to be done at the same time. Mastectomy to be done this summer and the hysterectomy to be done next summer. Bummed because as a teacher I really wanted to get them both done in the ten weeks I was off but understand their reasoning

Hi! I just found out that I have the BRCA 2 gene. I was wondering why the docs said you can't get both surgeries this summer? I'm a teacher too, and I'm concerned about schedules as well. Also, are you getting the reconstruction done at the same time

I teach a prekindergarten class that is full of heavy demands so the doctors feel doing both in the matter of nine weeks would be too much for my body to handle. I am bummed though because I wanted to get both done before school starts. I guess I have to trust that moffitt cancer center knows what they are doing I am not doing reconstruction. I plan on being flat and fabulous

Hi there, this is the first time I have posted anything about what I and so many of you are going through. I am recovering from my hysterectomy which was in April (last month) and I have now scheduled my double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery in June. I guess it really depends on the doctors in regards to scheduling of the surgeries, as I am having both surgeries 10 weeks apart. I like you just wanted to get them out of the way. I am doing all this because I was diagnosed with BRAC2 R2520X (7786C>T) Deleterious Mutation and have first degree and second degree relatives who have had breast cancer. I found someone else on this site with the same mutation. It's like finding a needle in a haystack.

HI, I am getting the reconstruction with expanders done at the same . The surgery is scheduled for six hours with the breast and plastic surgeon both in the OR at the same time. As soon as the breast surgeon completes the removal the plastic surgeon takes over to do the reconstruction with expanders.

I am going for genetic counseling In June. Has anyone had genetic testing if they were adopted? I have a 20 year history of BC (4x) , always at a early stage, however, the 5th time in April I went to metastatic stage IV. What types of testing is available to someone without a family tree?

That's a tough one. I don't know. The genetic people you go see I would think would have the answers for you there. That would be a good question for them

Max - I'm so sorry you have had the damn cancer monkey on yourback for so long. It is so unfair. I do have an extensive family history and did the Brca and Bart tests in 2011 and 2012.I recently did a private pay ($249) 19 gene panel from Color Genomics. Results take 6 to 12 weeks so I'm still waiting. My onc thought a genetic panelwould be good to do in case a gene popped up that put me at risk for a different type of cancer. I wanted to do it for DD s sake.

Hi everyone, I tested positive for BRCA2 "suspected deleterious". I called Myriad and was told that due to not wanting to take any of it lightly they view suspected as the same as deleterious. My paternal aunt passed of breast and ovarian cancer at a young age. My paternal 2nd cousins both had mastectomies. I have been doing surveillance for about 3 years after I found a lump (benign) in my right breast but after another scare (this time ovaries and uterus) I have scheduled the ooph but not feeling so strongly that I will actually go through with it. I am not sure what is holding me back. I am 46 and am playing the gambling game in my head over maybe getting a few more years in with my ovaries. My Dr. is ok with me having 6 mos check ups to screen for BC by having mammo/MRI with the feeling that if detected early I can opt for mastectomy then however, she feels the ovarian cancer is too risky to "sit and watch". Does anyone else have a suspected BRCA result?

Went in for mammo which is one pre surgery testing they are doing. Well after they had me do an unscheduled ultrasound because two spots were found in one breast surgery for this double mastectomy is coming at a good time. Tech says these spots don't look suspicious but still a bit nervous

I am still waiting on the results of my BRCA testing. It has been over three weeks now. There was a delay due to insurance paperwork.

PreK, what test did they run that found your mutations?

    Peace and healing,

I would think your personal history would provide enough support to proceed with genetic testing.

Instiches, I had a full panel ran. This means I had 27 genes tested. It took my results 36 days to come back. My intense family history of multiple cancers made doctors want a full panel. My brca came back negative. My pten gene had a "severe mutation"

Ambrey genetics in California did mine. I'm in Florida. I didn't have breast cancer however I had a scare last summer that turned out benign. Around March more spots were found that were benign. I had bone cancer in 2009. Having that cancer, family history, and the scares so far is why I did genetic testing and had a double mastectomy

I was told I was BRCA 2 positive while pregnant. Only reason I ran the test was they found a 20 cm cyst on my ovary. My mom had BC at 27. Anyway, it was malignant and I had the full hysterectomy, with ovaries out too. At that time they staged me at 3b. In ovarian cancer world they talk about 5 year survival rates and for my stage it's something like 46%.  I haven't really had any problems with abruptly hitting menopause 6 weeks after having a baby. Initially I was not going to have a BMX however, habing gone through chemo once and having a beautiful baby boy, I want to live. I don't want that worry hanging over me. That said, although I am reconciled to doing it, I sure don't want to. I want to keep my breasts. But, not at the 45% chance that they will give me cancer. The closer I get to this surgery though, the more weepy I have become. Our situations suck, but we all need to do what is best for us. A lot of people have it a lot worse than I do, and that's what I remind myself every time I start getting down.
