Why is lying down on back so painful w/expanders?
Had my bilateral & expanders on 7/7 - not even 2 weeks out yet. The pain/pressure is now almost tolerable throughout the day.
Looks like he filled them quite a bit - surprised to see I actually have a bit of cleavage.
I don't have a recliner & don't have the $$ to get one, so I "sleep" propped up in bed.
I slide downward after a couple hours, and wake up almost on my back with the most tremendous pressure/pain - like giant rocks are going to explode from my chest.
This pain is relieved by sitting up completely for a while.
Just curious as to why it happens this way. Boy oh boy, I can't wait until the day I can sleep on my side again - or just LIE DOWN... ahhhhhhhhhhhh. sounds sooooo nice.
Also, is it normal to have pains in particular spots when taking a deep breath - i.e., I get a pain near breastbone when I take a deep breath?
Thanks for helping out this newbie!!! Julie

Hang in there Julie, it will get better. At least it did for me. I had a hard time sleeping at first too, but within about six weeks or so I was much more comfortable . I did have some random pains early on, but if it is the same spot or really bad I would call your Dr.
I hope you get some sleep soon!

It's great that you started out with some fill!
I do think ladies who get fill at the orignal time have more discomfort. It's a lot for your muscles to get used to.
Are the drains out yet? As time goes by you can work on stretching. I'll bet when you are sitting up that you are slightly slumped forward which can relieve pressure on your chest muscles. Try to be aware of that because you don't want to end up slumped over on a permanent basis.
Imagine yourself lying on your back, legs straight up against a door or wall. Now, hands underneath your head. After your drains are out and you're feeling stronger that's what to practice towards.

I have often wondered the same thing about why it hurt so bad at first to lie down. I was in the recliner for about two months. If I tried to lie down, I could only get so far and then it hurt too bad to go the rest of the way. It will get better, be assured, but it does take time.
I had my last fill last week and am now waiting for my exchange surgery in August. It hurts when I take a deep breath too. And forget about sneezing!! That's the worst of all. I think that the expander presses on our ribs and creeps up under our armpits and gives us strange pains.

Hi Julie,
I am pretty much on the same schedule as you as I had my surgery 7/9- bilateral ( L was prophy)Snb and immediate reconstruction. I also have been having significant pain when lying down. It feels as though there is a truck on top of my chest. I find my hands become numb while I am propped up with pillows and sleeping on my back. I can only stay in that position for a few hours and then I must get up walk around and I usually wind up in my recliner chair. My 7 year old son does not understand why I am sleeping in my chair in the living room each night. From what I have have been reading it does get better. I fell like my pectoral muscle (aka- chest muscle) is fighting the expansion and that is where the pain is coming from.
I hope you find comfort in knowing you are not alone and that it does get better( I hope)

Hi ladies--I'm almost 9 weeks from my bilateral expander exchange--and assure you it will get better. If your dr. will allow you--start some stretching exercises...it really helps. Lie on the floor and do snow angels (minus the leg movement). Also, I would kneel and then move my arms along the floor--it stretched my back and arms (think its called a cat stretch). Also, gentle arm stretching by a significant other helped to. Your muscle will finally give up the fight and setlle in and you'll be pain free!. Also, once the implants are in--they'll feel extremely lighter and more natural--and you'll be able to sleep on you tummy again. My expanders always reminded me of turtle shells strapped to my chest. Hang in there---and keep moving (if dr. approves :-). Erin

Hey Julie -
Have you tried some pillows under your knees when laying in bed. It might help to keep you from sliding down.

HI Julie,
I had the same experience as you. I woke up after surgery to being filled 300cc on one side and 275 on the other. I never asked to be filled that much but I was a natural D to begin with so I'm guessing they had to do something with all my skin. I was in terrible pain from day one when I would lay down. It resolved at about 4 weeks. I took maybe one vicodin during the day but had to take 1 and 1/2 vicodin at night. Two vicodin was too much for me.
Wedge pillows helped tremendously! Got them at Linens and Things. I slept with two of them at the head of my bed with a pillow on top of them, pillows at my sides and one under my legs. The wedge pillows should help you keep from sliding down. I completely relate to what you are talking about. I was miserable.
I also had a hard time breathing. There was pressure on my ribs making it really hard to take a deep breath. Just when I thought I was going to feel like this forever, I got better. I have not had anymore fills because I now need more surgery but these expanders are no longer uncomfortable.
I started physical therapy about 7 weeks after surgery and that also has helped a lot. When you get the okay, stretching and exercise in general (walking) is important. It is a bit uncomfortable to jog/run for me 3 months out of surgery but I am doing most everything else I normally would do at the gym, elliptical, weights etc...
Good luck. Hope you are feeling better soon.

Lying flat stretches the pec muscles out to the sides. They don't want to go that way!! Also, I think there's so stitching done near those lower ribs, so getting flat really pulls there, too.
It was weeks before I could lie flat. And months before I could sleep on my tummy. Hang in there!

Hi Julie,
I was exactly the same as you! I'm now almost 8 weeks since bilat mast and expanders (filled to 200cc at surgery) The first 3 weeks were the worst then it got better. I couldn't lie flat for about 6 weeks or completely on my side for 7 weeks. Even now I use 2 pillows and 1 of them is a V -shaped one. I also put a small roll behind my back so that I could lie sort of half on my side without rolling on to my back. I found I was worse when I first woke up but it would ease after about 10 mins and hot showers are the best! I just took the pain tabs offered to me by the ps until it settled. I don't need anything now.
I think it may be like Anne says, the muscles relax and stretch when you are flat and especially when you fall asleep. I was told by my ps that the breast bone pain is because the nerves are cut alongside the breastbone when they do the mastectomy. BTW; have you noticed a strange cold feeling across your chest when you drink anything colder than body temperature? I did and my ps said he sometimes hears this from his patients and thinks it has something to do with the nerves being cut next to the breast bone.
Like everyone says: Hang in there Julie, the worst is almost over. Oh, I just remembered, the nurse suggested I get dh to raise the bottom of the bed to stop the sliding, I didn't do that, but I guess it could work. All the best, Carol
-
I slept on my back with pillows around me and when I would wake up it felt like bricks on my chest. DH would help me out of bed and I would cup my foobs with my hands for a while and that seemed to help with the pain. I never slept in the recliner. After I got my drains out then I could start sleeping on my sides but still it was uncomfortable and I would put a rolled up towel at my back and sleep halfway over on my side (like Carol did) but when I turned over I had to take the towel with me LOL. I did try one of those wedge pillows but did not like it. It does get better with each passing week. It has been 12 weeks post-op and I am feeling fabulous.

I like using a pillow under my back lengthwise - not sure why it helped. STRETCHING as soon as the doc allows. Wall crawls with fingers, arms above head with hands clasps together and elbows against my ears really helped. A small soft fairly flat pillow between the mattress and boob and another more substantial one between the boobs to support the upper boob helps take the pressure off. It gets better! Hang in there.
-
Another thing Julie, I came to this site, like you, when I was about 2 weeks post bm and expanders. There was the topic "continued tissue expander pain!!' I had to smile when I saw it had had over 19,000 views! It was then that I realized I was definitely not alone! :-)

CarolG99 - wow I can't believe I just read your post talking about the strange feeling you get in your chest when you drink anything cold. This just happened to me today I thought what a weird feeling! Glad to know I'm not the only weird one, you know how we always think we are different somehow (be it good or bad)
I agree with everyone about just wedging pillows in every part of my body that seems to need it until I am comfortable. Overall though I have more uncomfortable in the last couple of days than I was for the week after surgery (on July 7th). The expander feels like it is moving under my armpit? Has anyone else felt like that? Also my tubbing is pulled out a little bit and there is slight infection around it and the other hole where the other drain was. My PS gave me more antib. and told me to clean the area 2/3times a day, then use peroxide and neosporin. She also told me to put a loose loop in the tube and tape it to my skin so it doesn't pull more. Does anyone else have any suggestions or experience with that?
-
Hi Monique,
I am 2 1/2 months postop from bilat mast w/ expanders, and I had 2 of my drains in for 5 weeks!!! That was very miserable. I wish I had thought about looping the drain and taping it to my skin, as I also had one that pulled out quite a bit. Pulled my skin out too, so it looked funny and hurt lke heck. My PS had me take 2 diff antibiotics for about 6 wks till after I got the last drains out, so I didn't have any infections. Getting them out, finally, was wonderful! But the tape over the dressings on the drains was wearing my skin raw, so I started using ace bandages and just wrapping them across my chest, and over all the drains--that felt much better than all that tape. I still have some red marks from the tape, so am using some scar ointment for that. I have not had my expanders move, but I have read of other ladies that had that, and I can't recall if the PS had to adjust it, or if it was ok to leave it alone.
Gals, it feels wonderful once you can really sleep on your side again! Sounds like you everyone is doing real well....it just takes time...lots of time...to be healed. I feel pretty good now and am doing almost anything I want...gardening, heavy work, etc. Not sure if I am supposed to be doing all that, but my PS said if it doesn't hurt it should be alright.
Take care everyone,
Kathy

The pillow under the knees has helped me more than anything else. I found that without it I tended to rest too much weight on my elbows to prevent sliding down, and that made my hands numb. It does need to be a little higher than just one pillow - I folded a body pillow in half and tied it with yarn. Looks weird, but it does the trick. Having a pillow beside me to put the SNB arm up on has helped the underarm swelling too. I'm a longtime side sleeper, but I'm amazed at how comfortable the knee pillow has made back sleeping.

Girls I had my bilat mast. on June 9th and I have felt everything you all explain. I couldn't lay down for at least 3 weeks slept sitting up on couch. If I layed down felt like the bricks on chest. I had 50cc's put in at surgery and then the first fill was 50cc's and that set me back 6 days of pain. I went 25cc's the week after that and done so well and got back on my feet and have done great since. the next week i took 35cc's and then last week I took 45 and plan on taking 50 this week. My PS says its not a race, I do want the expanders out as soon as possible but I have to function also, and I am still reaching my goal. I now have gotten up to 205 so I am getting there. I just wanted to tell everyone don't hurry it to get it down quicker if it is painful. I am able to do all the things I was doing before and no pain. I can sleep in bed and just at times i feel the pressure around the expanders but nothing like before. It seems the more fills I get the better I am sleeping and feeling. Good luck to all. Hang in there it will be over soon. We all have to stick togather and get threw this. Hugs

I am having this exact pain. It's not bad once I'm up an moving except for tightness. But getting out of bed is excruciating in the morning. Stabbing pain all over the expanders for a minute or so. Or moving around on my back is also awful. I had delayed reconstruction and TE placed on April 2. During surgery I was filled to over 300 cc and am now at 585 cc. I wonder if that's considered a quick expansion? And may be the reason for my crazy pain. I've also had a full hysterectomy including ovaries and am having an awful time sleeping.
-
Oh, me too, I'm wondering when I'll ever get another decent night's sleep! I also had delayed reconstruction and had TEs placed on March 19. I'm at 250 ccs now and am uncomfortable pretty much all of the time. I dread sneezing..wow, that hurts. I am forced to sleep on my back, which is not comfortable and just when I'm feeling a bit better, it's time for another fill
-
Me three! I just read your post and feel exactly the same way. My first fill was a wk ago. Not sure how much CC. Will have to remember to ask the next time. I have been extremely uncomfortable since. Hate taking pain pills so trying to survive on Tylenol and Vicodin for just at night! I wish there was some cream that you can rub on to relieve the discomfort.
Wish you ladies a good night sleep !

had my mastectomy in February and on Friday the 15th my reconstructive surgery. I can relate. I've tried and I was able to sleep on my side 4 20 minutes. But the pain of the breast expander and the metal plate makes it horrible to lie flat.
I also have a pain in my chest bone between my 2 . Sharp and painful. I rubbing it all the time. Lus pain off and on under my arm. But I'm hoping after my surgery it will go away.
I call my breast expander my little football. Because it looks like a football but feels like a basketball. Bending over to get something I dropped hurts also.
The things we have to deal with. Life is great!
Just remember our breast expanders are only temporary. We deal with them for about 2 1/2 months while they expand. Then it's time for your reconstructive surgery.

You are right! I keep thinking it could be a lot worse! Good night and Pleasant dreams!
