Hello,

I'm new to this discussion board and looking for some guidance and information regarding Breast Cancer. My mom was recently diagnosed with stage 0 Breast Cancer, Ductal Carcinoma In-Situ. Since then, my life has been turned upside down. I live in another country and I was devastated that I couldn't be with my mom to provide her with the support a daughter can provide in hard times like this. Her prognosis looks good. I spoke to her doctor and she told me she is going to be fine. She only has calcifications and needs a partial mastectomy and some radiation sessions. I want to know what are the chances of cancer coming back after she is done with the treatment? Also, I don't know if my mind is playing tricks on me as I'm obviously very worried but I've been experiencing pain underneath my underarms, not exactly under my underarms but more like where my breasts ends. However, the pain in far from my breast. I have done my research and technically, you're supposed to get a mammogram 10 years before the diagnosis of your mother but I want to be safe and get myself checked. I have an appointment after 2 weeks and I will also speak to the doctor about getting the cancer gene test done. What are my chances of getting Breast Cancer at age 25, when my mom was diagnosed at age 50 with no other family history?Thank you

    Hi Martian,

Welcome to the BCO community. We are glad that you reached out to us. We are sorry to hear about your mom's diagnosis but glad that she was detected early and that her prognosis is good. It can be hard to be so far away when someone whom you love is dealing with such a diagnosis. It also sounds like her diagnosis has raised your own fears and for many the worry that accompanies breast cancer for family members is not uncommon. Scheduling a check up with your own doctor will hopefully ease some of your concerns. Here is a link to information on our site about Understanding your risk for breast cancer. Keep us posted on how your mom and you are doing. The Mods

I think it's a good idea to get a checkup and baseline mammo for peace of mind and to be able to keep track for future appointments. I know they usually say 30 or 10 years younger than the age of a first degree relative diagnosed, but I'm hearing more and more to just get one done. Regular non-invasive checks of any kind are a good idea (i.e. skin checks, breast exams, pap smears, etc.). Let us know how everything is going. Hugs!
