Help with my Mom

Options

I'm new here and forgive me for not knowing all of the terms and acronyms but I need a realistic outlook on what to expect with my Mom. She's 76 years old and was just diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer that has metastasized to her liver and in an artery near her clavical. It is a "poorly differentiated carcinoma". The doc is putting her on Taxotere 3 weeks on 1 week off. Said will likely be on chemo "the rest of her life". My parents live a couple hours away from me and I am trying to get an idea of what is to be expected. How sick is she going to get from the chemo? How long might the rest of her life be? I want to know if at her age with the advance stage that she's in does it make sense or do any good to do the chemo? I don't want her to suffer any more than she's going to and if the life expectancy is t much different I'd rather her not go through the pain of chemo coupled by the pain of cancer. I don't want sugar coating. I want realistic opinions or guidance. She's thinking of opting out of treatment and if that makes sense then I stand by her

    KSalamon-

We wanted to welcome you to our community here at BCO. We're so sorry for the circumstances that bring you here, but we hope you get the support and advice you're looking for.

We're sure some of our knowledgeable members will offer their insight, but in the meantime, we wanted to direct you to two more forums where you might find the info you're looking for. The first is our Stage IV forum, which is located here: https://community.breastcancer.org/forum/8. This forum is only open to our members who have a stage IV diagnosis, but there is a sub-forum for people with questions, and you can certainly read through all the sections. The second forum is for Family and Caregivers of People with Stage IV: https://community.breastcancer.org/forum/144. This will probably be a very helpful forum for you and your mom.

Please let us know if we can be of any assistance. You're all in our thoughts!
