Anyone using Estrosmart, methyl B12 and methyl folate?
Hello All,
I just had an appointment with my GYN because I have been feeling like my hormone levels are rising (estrogen), my period has not returned but all of the rest of my old symptoms have. Fatigue, irritability, cravings, water retention, etc....and hot flashes have stopped. Not that I am complaining about that one! Since I am highly Estrogen positive this makes me a little nervous. My gyn suggested that I take methyl B12 5000 units per day, methyl folate 1000 units 2x per day and DIM (Estrosmart). She explained that Estrogen is metabolized by three routes. The first 2 hyroxy estrogen, the second 4 hydroxyl estrogen, and thirdly as 16 hyroxy estrogen (this one found to dominate in many women with breast cancer) These supplements are used to "force" the "good" metabolite of 2 hydroxyl instead of the 16-hydroxy. Any one else here of this? Love to see some research not that I am skeptical or anything lol...why have I not heard anything about these until now?

My integrative oncologist has me taking methyl B12 (1000 iu) and DIM+ (twice a day) for prevention

I've been taking DIM and methyl B-12 as well and was just reading a website about the MTHFR genetic variation this morning, so it's funny to see this. I suspect very strongly that this is something that runs all thru my family b/c we've got it all--cancer, diabetes--juvenile and adult, dementia, and a host of other ills such as ADHD, Asperger's, and allergies. I'll look into this, and meanwhile here's the link to the site: http://mthfr.net/
One thing that has made me lose a little faith in my doc is that he laughed off my concerns about this and has me on a vitamin B supplement with folic acid and I shouldn't be taking folic acid if I have this mutation (which a sizable minority of the population does)--I should be taking the methyl-folate. However, I've not gotten far enough into my research to know much about it except the very basics.

pipers,
I have read that folic acid is not good and folate should be taken instead.

Yes, new2bc, I've read that too, which is why I'm concerned. I try to get my folate from veggies and have a leafy greens garden growing by my door. Actually it's leafy purples, lol. I read that if you have this MTHFR mutation, you should eat a salad every single day.

I have tested positive to the MTHFR mutation. The test was requested by my nutritionist and tshe old me to stop my vit B supplement as my folic acid levels were very high. She also tested my thyroid levels and felt I was was turning hypothyroid - the 3rd time tested confirmed hypothyroid with VERY out of range values. Only then was my GP okay with a prescription for Armour Thyroid medication - I did not want the synthetic form.

Pipers,
what B vitamins does your doctor have you taking? I only take Methyl B-12 1000 mcg by NOW. You can find B vitamins that don't have folic acid.

I'm taking B-stress from BioTech, ones recommended by my doc but I'm thinking of stopping those and switching to either B minus or HomocysteX from Seeking Health. The ones I'm taking now have 2000 mcg of folic acid in them and if I do have this mutation, as I highly suspect that I do, it will be a help and if I don't have it, I don't see how it can hurt. I'm going to ask my doc to run the 23andMe blood test b/c I've read that it tests for this and other mutations as well. Did you all do this test? All of my reading today led me to looking into Shilajit too. Have you all heard of this? Sounds interesting and there is some preliminary research to back it up plus a couple thousand years of Ayurvedic medicine behind it as well. If you decide to do this and want to try it you have to make sure you get a really good brand--there is a lot of crap out there that won't help or may even be harmful.
-
No scratch that. Further research says Thorne has a really good brand and several choices.

Yes I have started also taking these methylators. Impressed that your gyn knows anything about this. Estrogen dominance which is what most here have is partially due to poor methylation leaving us with too much dangerous circulating estrogen as it doesn't get converted properly into less dangerous forms of this and other hormones. If you do 24 hour complete hormone urine testing you will see how unbalanced is your estrogen

I'm going to take the MTHFR test too at suggestion of doc. I am clearly a bad Methylators and suspecting this as a huge part of my breast changes now ADH. I'm going to see a Naturopath about what vitamins and minerals too take. B12 and folate way too high in serum blood which means that more of the proper forms of these elements are needed. I also take the Seeking Health Homocystein Plus. I also tested very low for iodine and copperwhich I'm now supplementing. I also have hypothyroid and type 1 Diabetes. All of this came at me at once .
