don't lose weight??

A friend commented that because estrogen is stored in fat, it's a bad idea to attempt to shed a lot of weight if you're ER+/PR+ because it will dump all that estrogen into your system. Any comments on this notion?

    Hi Cheesequake -

First, we always recommend talking to your doctor first, but our main Breastcancer.org site states just the opposite on the Risk Factors: Being Overweight page:

"Being overweight also can increase the risk of the breast cancer coming back (recurrence) in women who have had the disease. This higher risk is because fat cells make estrogen; extra fat cells mean more estrogen in the body and estrogen can make hormone-receptor-positive breast cancers develop and grow."

To read more on losing weight after a breast cancer diagnosis, and to get some tips on how to lose weight, see the main Breastcancer.org site's sections on Nutrition and Exercise.

    We hope this helps!

Cheesequake- It would be interesting to know how fat cell produce & release estrogen. A quick look thru google took me mostly to unreputable sites. I think the enzyme aromatase plays a large part. Maybe some one knowledgeable will chime in.
